Modi: Journey of A Common Man (2019)
Shameless sycophancy, made even more intolerable by shoddy execution
One of the most inept, shameless, puerile attempts at hagiography of one of the greatest conmen of all time. Laughably caricaturish characters, stuffy dialogue, horrible script, glaring plotholes- this one is worse than the earlier Bollytrash movie on the same subject. It takes some doing to outdo that disastrous movie.
Attenborough's Paradise Birds (2015)
A Lifetime of Passion: Sir Attenborough and the Birds of Paradise
This is like the now-proverbial Godfather offer- one you cannot refuse. Every lover of natural history/wildlife shows is aware of the passionate pleasure and sense of wonder Sir Attenborough derives from his encounters with these beautiful, otherworldly creatures. He has visited them time and again and shared his wealth of knowledge with us. This is perhaps his most captivating and final foray into this increasingly threatened wilderness. Shot in amazing detail in vivid HD, it is an absolute treat to the eyes and ears, a must-watch. He describes in some detail how the early explorers and Zoologists discovered them and studied them in detail over generations. Sir Attenborough also recounts his early documentaries on the birds of paradise with nostalgic footage from them. He also shows how the culture of primitive human communities inhabiting these areas was inspired by these beautiful creatures. And how increasing human population, new settlements, urbanization and deforestation are destroying their habitats and directly pushing them towards extinction. Highly recommended.
Ek Chhotisi Love Story (2002)
Pathetic, typical Bollywood example of banality and shameless plagiarism
This movie is an assault to the senses and an insult to intelligence. Crappy Bollywood thieves churn out senseless copies of foreign classics, sans all their dignity, artistic value and finesse. As if murdering Hollywood movies wasn't enough, they are now gleefully mutilating avant garde European filmmakers like Kieslowski and Antonioni. The less said about the actors the better. What else can you expect from mindless copycats? Bollywood stinks! They don't even have the decency to acknowledge the originals. With the amount of money at their disposal, Bollywood guys could have made better movies. At least they are financially much better off than their Iranian, Romanian and Turkish counterparts. But it is the the utter lack of imagination and creativity that afflicts the filmmakers in this part of the world. The exceptions to this (Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen and a few other such people) have always been relegated to the periphery of the popular cinema circles of India. Truly unfortunate.
