L'Avventuraesqe yet bold enough to capture one's imagination and refuse to let go.
10 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
a bag of tainted cocaine, a stick, a lawnmower, a giant nail, a flagpole, a rope attached to a car...what do all of these seemingly inanimate objects have in common? well, they can be used to kill people you hate for little or no reason in very creative and interesting ways. In this 3rd installment of the famous series, Angela Baker is seemingly recovered from her past troubles (like that time she killed 40 kids and then showed everybody her ding-dong) and prepared to enjoy a fun relaxing summer with a group of accepting kids who genuinely enjoy her company. But no, it doesn't quite happen that way. To our surprise, and to Angela's great horror, the former Camp Arawak, and Camp Rolling Hills is now called Camp New Horizons, which is not only a sh*tty name but also a shitty idea for a camp. In fact its so sh*tty, the people in charge of it had to recruit messed up kids from all across America just to fill its bunks, which, by the way, have housed dead kids on numerous occasions. And by messed up kids I mean every single ethnic stereotype you can think of. Well, things don't exactly go well since, you know, every culture hates each other for the little, petty differences. Like how the black kid takes out a knife on the varsity white kid who asks him if a seat at his table is taken. Or, how the black kid carries around a boom-box all the time and continuously listens to this weird blend of hip-hop and horse manure. Or also, how the black kid has a gun. But besides their ethnic differences, surprisingly the kids appear like they are starting to get along, until they start being killed one by one by the one person at the camp who isn't a huge stereotype; unless you count murderous, lonely, hermaphrodite as a stereotype. I guess the underlying theme of this movie is that stereotypes are bad and should be eliminated from society. That still doesn't explain why she killed the junkie news reporter though. Sleepaway Camp 3 could also be a subliminal attack at ratings-hungry news journalism, and how they all deserve to die painfully awkward deaths falling out of their car, limb by limb. So, in the end I would definitely recommend this film, if not for its reliable death scenes, then for its almost utter lack of any kind of police presence. Unless you consider the cop/counselor who gets killed by Angela a real cop. And by cop I mean like a single cop, such as the lone officer who we see at the end of Sleepaway Camp 1 who is sent by his obviously competent precinct to check on a camp that claims to have suffered casualties similar to those of a French military battalion. In closing, it was a film that stirred all sorts of emotions in me, and made me realize that not all people deserve to live. I'm actually just kidding, but seriously in the famous words: "Angela why are you so F****d up?"

Manhunter (1986)
8/10
Basically the most underrated thriller of all time.
21 June 2005
Besides the fact that it was released without much hoopla in 1986, and that it was recently remade(the same exact movie except for the end) as Red Dragon, Manhunter is undoubtedly the most overlooked movie of the past 20 years. The plot is tremendous, Mann's direction is outstanding, and the acting(especially Noonan) is equally amazing. What Mann realized while making this film is that a thriller was not just meant to shock and disgust the audience but to develop the characters carefully so that there is an even greater sense of anticipation for the climax of the movie than there otherwise would be. Recent thrillers are clearly lacking in the character development that made movies like Manhunter and Silence of the Lambs so good. Its a shame that Red Dragon had to be made, since it is basically a strait ripoff of Manhunter except for a different ending which is much worse than the original and way too predictable. Anyone who thinks Red Dragon was a good movie should watch Manhunter and compare the two. If you try this you'll see that there is no comparison. Tom Noonan's performance alone is worth the watch.
