Ted Lasso (2020–2023)
10/10
Ted can win over even the biggest cynic!
9 June 2023
At a time when shows tend to be grounded and realistic, divisive and preachy, it's beautiful to have something like Ted Lasso to remind us all that being optimistic and kind is not the same as being naive.

Even if you are a cynic like me, it's impossible to not slowly get to love this show. The premise is quite simple and familiar, but the truly heart warming messages delivered with incredible finesse and consistency are what ultimately wins you over. Football is the canvas, it's actually the characters that make this show.

Thank you Ted for reminding us that being a good person is its own reward.

Hogwarts Legacy (2023 Video Game)

Every HP fan's lifelong dream!
13 February 2023
It feels like I've been waiting for this game for more than 20 years. I was ready for it since I read the first books as a child, but technology wasn't ready at the time.

I will not spoil anything, the story is more than decent though nothing extraordinary. However that matters very little. All that matters is that you get to live out your fantasy of attending Hogwarts and practicing magic!

All the locations, be it Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest and the surrounding countryside feel alive in a way you can't even imagine! Through many segments, I was honestly smiling like a small boy out of sheer joy and I'm a grown man. Simply put, if you too have enjoyed the wizarding world, then do not miss out on this experience!

PS: Only reasons I gave it 9 stars and not 10 are because the facial expressions could use a little more work and mainly because Quidditch is missing. If they add that in a dlc, we are talking the perfect game!

Normalizing unhealthiness
14 May 2022
Is being fat the only vice out there? Obviously not. But it's the only vice these days with a strange tendency of being considered rude to point out. It's not rude to point out that smoking or drinking is bad. So why is it rude to do the same for overeating?

Whether being fat is beautiful is a matter of individual preference. But whether it's healthy, that's science and the answer is no. Pretending like it's ok to be this fat is misleading. Fat people should not be attacked or made to feel less, but accepting bad health should not be encouraged.

3 stars for the ladies who obviously try hard to be good at what they do.

Just falls flat...
7 April 2022
This movie is sadly simply average in every respect.

There are a few chuckles here and there but no laugh out loud moments. The plot is serviceable but not intriguing or immersive. The leads are obviously all capable actors but the script asks nothing of them.

Generally a mediocre movie that you will forget a few days later. Definitely not worth a theater viewing, maybe catch it at home at some point if you are interested.

Honestly, better than I expected!
11 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
When Marvel first announced its Phase 4, I admit that I wasn't exactly excited about Shang-Chi. I had never even heard of the hero, so I was a lot more hyped for Spiderman and Doctor Strange than a complete unknown.

Watching the movie, I was pleasantly surprised. Simu Liu is very likable as the main character, while Tony Leung is a big name in China and he demonstrates why. The man is a criminal who trained his own child as an assassin, yet through his acting you still feel sympathy for him when he broods over his lost love.

The fighting scenes are also exceptionally well done and visually the movie is stunning, trying to incorporate some oriental elements into the MCU.

Sure there are some woke snippets here and there, they sadly seem mandatory for any movie these days. Things like Katy mastering archery in a couple of days or Shang-Chi's sister teaching herself combat because their father wouldn't train a girl and despite that, somehow being on the main character's level. But you can overlook these with a little effort.

If there is one thing I did not enjoy, it's the scenes with the dragon. I feel that it bogged down the movie with an unnecessary cgi-fest. For me, it would have served the movie a lot better if the story focused on pure combat and the 10 rings themselves. I would have also liked to see Shang-Chi struggle more with his upbringing. It would have made his character a lot more interesting and nuanced than presenting a child assassin as a well adjusted typical American.

Despite the above points which in my eyes are missed opportunities, the movie was definitely better than I expected and the mere fact that I look forward to seeing more of Shang-Chi, makes me count this as a win for Marvel.

4 stars for Kate, otherwise hard pass...
24 July 2021
Let me start by saying that I love Kate, she is a good actress and the fact she is one of the hottest women working at the moment is a bonus.

How many times must Hollywood do this though? Watching a thin woman like Kate knock the stuffing out of men 3 times her size does not make for a good action movie. It makes for a laugh and not the good kind... It was believable in Underworld because Selene was a vampire and you could attribute her skills to supernatural powers. Here it just falls flat and looks silly.

Women are not men and men are not women. Both have areas where they excel more than the other. Why do the movies try to turn women into men these days? All it does is make men feel awkward and women feel patronized...

Just stop it please...

Simply engaging!
29 October 2020
I just had to leave a review for such a well crafted mini-series. Perfect balance of emotion, drama, character growth and story telling and most importantly a fantastic performance by the lead actress. A must-watch!

The Expanse (2015–2022)
10/10
A future that actually feels plausible!
14 October 2020
The main factor that makes this show amazing in my eyes, is that the technology depicted actually feels possible!

Many loved sci-fi franchises present techs and places that with our current knowledge seem completely unreachable. The Expanse on the other hand takes place in our own neighborhood, our solar system. Humanity has not achieved light speed, but our spacecrafts travel and brake in a way that makes sense. Even artificial gravity is explained, it's not just magically there.

To this quite realistic worldbuilding, add the human politics and dynamics and you get a beautiful space opera. Granted it takes at least half a season to really kick off, but when it does, it becomes the best sci-fi show in years!!

A disaster movie without the disaster..!
14 October 2020
Yes, you read the title right!

If you expect to see impressive visual effects of comets raining down on the globe and destroying civilization as our hero runs for his life, then prepare for disappointment.

The movie is basically a family drama with the disaster as a backdrop in a few very short sequences here and there, some of which are happening off screen.

Nothing here that you have not seen done before and better by other movies of the genre... The 4 stars are for the cast's efforts and the rare disaster scenes.

A treat for the eyes, not so much for the mind...
23 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Abrams had admittedly a very difficult task after The Last Jedi. I didn't want to be biased, so on purpose I did not read any reviews at all and went to see this movie with low expectations. I can sum up this review in two main complaints:

1) Maybe I am picky or maybe I'm getting older, but unfortunately these characters never managed to leave a strong impression on me... The only character that piqued my interest and made me care was Kylo Ren, not only because Driver gives by far the best performance of the new generation, but because his dilemmas and emotional traumas made him interesting. The complete opposite of Rey, who apparently can do no wrong and succeeds with minimal training and effort against forces even Luke struggled to defeat... Star Wars was never renowned for its script, but at least had actors good enough to made you overlook some of the dialogue (Alec Guinness, Harrison Ford, Ewan McGregor, Christopher Lee, Samuel Jackson, etc). We didn't have actors of such caliber in this trilogy and it shows in the lack of truly iconic moments. Moments like Anakin telling Luke that he has been saved and then dying or Vader storming the Jedi Temple and killing the younglings.

2) If you shut off your mind and take in the incredibly fast pace, the movie is enjoyable. But the moment you start thinking even a little about what you have seen, the problems begin... A massive fleet that is literally crippled by a single antenna which happens to be left unguarded, a rag-tag fleet of civilian vessels takes out this all powerful fleet, horses running in space... I also felt that Palpatine being alive greatly diminishes the importance of what Luke accomplished and of Anakin's redemption...

Say what you will about the prequels, they had massive problems, but at least the spirit of Star Wars was there. They expanded the limited universe of the original trilogy, by showing us the inner workings of the galaxy and its politics, the slow complacency and corruption of Jedi ideals throughout the clone wars and most importantly they made us care about the characters! As much I try, I can't say the same for this trilogy... The one good thing I can say about this movie is that it somehow manages to answer all of the questions set up in the previous two films, which is an amazing feat in itself. Other than that it feels to me like a hollow experience. A treat for the eyes, but not so much for the mind...

Batwoman (2019–2022)

Did anyone honestly expect it to be good..?
28 October 2019
The signs were all there in the trailers...

Strong, independent, gay female supposedly replaces Batman and takes on whatever silly thing is managing to bother the progressive crowds these days... The acting is bad, the script is mediocre and a multitude of stereotypes are forced down our throat with a shovel...

Do yourself a favor and give this one a hard pass.

Toy Story 4 (2019)
7/10
Unnecessary sequel, but quite good!
25 June 2019
Let me be honest from the start. This was an excellent movie, just not quite as good as its predecessors.

My main issue is not with some particular aspect of the movie itself. It is more that I feel this sequel was not needed. Toy Story 3 had the most perfect ending they could have given the franchise. For those of us who grew up with the original movie in 1995, watching Andy grow up alongside ourselves and then passing Woody and the gang to another child, hit a deep emotional chord.

This sequel's ending was rather emotional too, it simply didn't reach the height of the previous movie. Everything was in place, the humor, the characters, the animation, they were all on point. I just couldn't help feeling that what I was seeing had no real reason to happen..

To make a long story short, this was a very good movie and a decent addition to the franchise. I simply felt that producing a sequel, somewhat diminishes the emotional impact of the 3rd movie's perfect ending.

Cobra Kai (2018–2025)
10/10
Never would have believed it!
4 May 2019
As almost everyone here, I saw the original movie back in the day and also its lackluster sequels. Then this series was announced and it would be putting it mildly if I said I was not optimistic.

Never have I been more happy to be proven wrong, as Cobra Kai is a hugely unexpected surprise and honestly way better than it had any right to be!

The pacing is excellent, the writing is refreshingly nuanced, Macchio and Zabka add deeper layers to characters we thought we knew, the new kids are engaging, the humor and emotion is on point and the jabs at our modern society are delivered with impressive finesse through the eyes of the 80s-stuck Johnny.

If you even remotely enjoyed the original film, this series is a must-watch! Now this is how you do a sequel, by treating the original material with love and letting it be your inspiration for something new, take notes Star Wars. Cobra Kai never dies..!

Simple reasons why this was a failure, which no one can dispute.
5 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Sadly, the anticipation for this film was not rewarded in the least... Others have already written detailed reviews, so I will simply focus on 2 specific reasons, which made the film a failure:

1. Character assassination

Lets face it. Either the writers had no idea what to do with the characters, or they are simply bad at their job. A few examples:
  • Supreme Leader Snoke was presented as a major threat, he was extremely intriguing, his power seemed unbeatable and theories ran wild as to his identity. Not only did we not learn anything about him, but he was killed in the lamest way imaginable...
  • Luke Skywalker, our beloved Luke... He is a man who refused to give up on even the most evil man in the galaxy, Darth Vader. Not only did he not give up on him, he actually turned him back to the Light! Now that same man tried to murder his young nephew, because he might turn to the dark side, despite having done nothing wrong by then! Does that make any sense...?
  • Rey is a Mary Sue, I'm sorry but she is... Anakin and Kylo Ren were trained since children, Luke was trained by two great masters and still struggled on a long journey. Rey masters the Force in a few days time because what..? Because she is a woman...? Modern political correctness at its best here, no matter how much some people try to deny it...

2. Pacing and poor story

Really now, between us fans, who cares about the whole casino storyline? I get them showing it, but devoting half an hour on this..? And again, the climax of the film is two ships slowly chasing each other? Since we heard Mark Hamill would return, all we wanted to see was Luke duel someone, be that Snoke or Kylo Ren. Couldn't they at least give us that? Then the whole film was setting up Rey and Kylo somehow working together, only for that plot to go nowhere... It was like a sad fanfiction...

Conclusion

Ultimately the film was simply not engaging... The pacing was way off, the story was full of holes, beloved characters were altered beyond recognition or swept aside to make room for useless characters like the Asian sidekick and none of the characters are given enough of a strong backstory to make you invested in their future...

The Last Jedi was a soulless movie that simply carried the Star Wars name, but that's not enough. At this point they will need a true miracle to turn things around in Episode IX.. Truly a shame what they did with a beloved franchise, but that's what happens when you let political agendas dictate...

House of Cards (2013–2018)
7/10
I feel simply sad...
6 November 2018
I am too disappointed to write a long winded review. House of Cards was one of the best shows ever made, but Netflix made sure it went out with a whimper...

Season 6 was admittedly not as bad as I expected to be, but it was far from good and lightyears from what the show has delivered in the past. Robin is a solid actress for sure and she does her best to take on the burden on her own shoulders, but lets be honest, the heart of the show is and always has been Frank Underwood. No matter how much it pains the keyboard warriors out there, it was mostly because of Kevin's performance that HoC became so successful and his absence leaves a gap the size of crater...

If you've followed the show so far, by all means watch the last season so you can see how it ends. Personally, I was filled with a constant sadness at what an amazing last season this could have been, compared to the mediocrity we received...

On a last note, I want to say how disgusted I am with the ridiculous political correctness. It has reached the point where mob mentality is placed on a higher level than the courts of law... What happened to "innocent until proven guilty"....? So some guy made an accusation and without any trial, a man's career is scrapped and a great show goes down the drain as a result... Well done people, well done society...

Charming and endearing!
18 November 2016
I admit walking into the theater, I was very excited but also a little apprehensive. I should not have worried at all though, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was incredibly enjoyable! Rowling's magical world is as alluring and fun as ever! For me, the best thing about this movie is exactly that. Exploring this world.

In the Harry Potter saga, with the exception of Deathly Hallows, most of the action was confined in Hogwarts. When we were taken out of the school, the main characters, being underage, were not allowed to do magic. The novelty in this movie is that we get to follow a fully fledged adult wizard in an entirely new environment and observe the dynamics and workings of the magical society.

Said wizard is Newt Scamander, a magical zoologist that traveled the world in order to find and document rare creatures, which he carries in his magical suitcase. When this suitcase gets mixed up with one that belongs to muggle Jacob, some of Newt's creatures escape and cause problems in New York.

Eddie Redmayne shines in this movie. He plays a very clearly British, endearing and slightly awkward Newt, but the character's kindness is obvious by the loving and friendly way that he treats his magical creatures. Dan Fogler does a great job as Jacob Kowalski, the muggle who is suddenly thrown into a world of wonder that existed beside him all along. He is the one the audience can best relate to, since he mirrors our sense of marvel. Katherine Waterstone and Alison Sudol also do a good job as the two vastly different magical sisters, who aid Newt in his adventure. If I had a small gripe, it would be that the excellent Colin Farell was in my opinion under used.

All in all, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is a solid and visually stunning movie that manages to achieve three things.

First, although it takes place in the Harry Potter universe, it stands apart and has its very own story, which can be enjoyed separately from that of the famous young wizard. Second, it drops quite a few hints and names, which not only tie in nicely with the stories that we know, but also serve to set up the next installments, which are rumored to document Dumbledore's past and connection with Grindelwald. Finally, the movie features a bustling 1926 New York, which coupled with the intriguing character dynamics, offers a brand new insight into Rowling magical world and leaves us poor muggles asking for more.

After following Harry's adventures, many of us were left wanting to see much more of the story and luckily for us, it seems Rowling has that much more to offer. Personally, I can't wait for the next movie, great job!

At last! A Harry Potter film that did the book justice!!
21 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
As a big fan of the books, I never thought I'd live to see this day and if this book was made into 1 film instead of 2, I never would..! However, this was at last a film that showed the book's story for exactly what it is. No important things missing, almost everything is in! Saw it last night and enjoyed it so much, that by the time it was over, I was eager for more!!

The main trio has come a long way as actors from when they first started these roles and in this one they are very good! They are of course surrounded as usually by a BRILLIANT cast, such as Alan Rickman, Jason Isaacs, Ralph Fiennes, Bonham Carter and many more.

Visually the result is awesome!! The airborne chase, the café fight and all action scenes were done beautifully! Story-wise, the only thing left out was the history of Dumbledore and his past connection with Grindelwald, which is important in the Hallows' story, but lets not be too demanding..! Everything else is pretty much like in the book! This movie is darker and sets up the ground for the final battle at Hogwarts and the trio's pursuit of the last Horcruxes!

All in all, kudos to David Yates for finally giving us a Harry Potter movie as it is supposed to be, kudos to the cast for an excellent performance and I can only hope the 2nd Part will be even better!! Best HP movie so far by a long stretch!

Lost: Across the Sea (2010)
Season 6, Episode 15
4/10
Could be so much better................
12 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Just a few hours before the grand finale of Lost, we learn according to the description, that in this episode we would learn about Locke/MIB's true intentions. Sounds great right?? Well not really......

*CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS*

We find out that Jacob and MIB are brothers and are not conceived on the island, but simply born there from a woman whose boat crashed. Another woman helps her give birth then kills her and raises the kids on her own.

In an episode like this I'd expect to get answers for questions like:

--What exactly are these "rules" that forbid Jacob and MIB to kill each other?? --What is this cave of light, except "the heart of the island" and a "source of energy that every human has".......??? --Where does the power Jacob and MIB have actually come from?? --What is that wheel contraption MIB was building and how did he know he'd be able to get of the island like that?? --How are the candidates chosen?? --Why is it that Smokey must not leave the island??

Instead we find out nothing that REALLY matters.....!! I feel we're heading to a big letdown here.. Imo, they should focus on giving us some REAL answers instead of the parallel universe thing!

I'm reserving judgement till the end of the show, but to be honest, it doesn't look good and I can only hope they have an ace up their sleeves....

On a good side, the background info was cool, but it was so little.. If there were to be another 10 episodes before the finale, it would be quite alright, but with time being in short supply I'm starting to wonder whether we'll ever get our answers...
