Sinkhole (2009)
cool little short!
This little gem was pretty interesting. If the "sinkhole" in the story isn't real, then the special effects are really impressive because it looked like the actual gates of Hell. I remember the actor who plays the salesman, Jason Harris, from TV. He was the host of a Nickelodon show a few years back called "Double Dare 2000" or something like that. It was cool when I recognized him and my daughter whose 13 recognized him too. He did a good job of not "taking it over the top" like he did when he was hosting the kids' show--in fact, I like him better as a dramatic actor. Even though this is low budget, the directing and cinematography were good too. Great exterior shots of the aforementioned sinkhole with nefarious steam rising from it, as well as some cave-like interiors with nice lighting and shadows. I think this was filmed somewhere on the East Coast. According to the IMDb page, Sinkhole has won some well-deserved awards so I'd say it's worth a watch.
Zombies Take the Schoolyard (2010)
Great little short
At first I didn't think I was going to like this short because the first minute or so was completely black with just sound. It got better once it got going. Two kids are stuck in a closet at school during a zombie attack caused by an acid rainstorm. One of the kids, Ralph, is older and a school news reporter (sorry I meant "Editor in Chief", as he sarcastically emphasizes). The younger kid, Scott, is more annoyed he's stuck in the closet with this older bully then he is about the monsters outside. Speaking of monsters, I liked that the zombies were teenagers, you don't really see that often. The make up was excellent, especially for such a low budget film. I don't want to give away what happens but the effects were pretty good and made me watch it twice to see them again. Both the boys are good actors and very believable. For a 10-minute short, they did a really good job of establishing the characters and having a conflict that wasn't just about surviving the zombie attack. All in all, a tight flick that's a little deeper than you usually find with low-budget horror.
