The Empress (2022)
Lame attempt of rewriting history
Apart from beautiful photography, sets and costumes, the narrative is completely false. We have the ruler of the empire that was dubbed "The dungeon of Nations" presented as a sensitive lad who cannot withstand watching his subjects hung and is worried if people like him. If Netflix wanted such a series to mimic The Crown, they could have invented and present it as "based on actual events"; but this series as a portrayal of history is hideous. Bridgerton is a great example of hot to use history without historical facts, and yet create a successful programme. I am afraid that someone sitting in Netflix does not realise how much damage it creates by rewriting the history.
Cry Macho (2021)
Why did you do it, Clint?
I just can't understand that he shot scenes like the one where mother is trying to lure him into bed, and there is obviously no way she'd do it. Or, when he punches a 30ish year old criminal in the face and sends him to the ground, and just minute before that his hands are shaking.
This film's scenes are not believable, like we believed him in Mule or Grand Torino. This, just doesn't work. Pity.
Otac (2020)
Overwhelming emotions
That fine line that separates cinematography's true artists from skilled craftsmen is very present in this film. Just that scene, where the Father finally succeeds in seeing his children again only to have his son accusing him of abandoning them was enough for me to understand director's and main actor's artistry. And then, right at the end of this scene, the director allows for the first and the only time in the film to the main character to release the tension that the audience feels through a simple father's action of protecting his son. It ripped me apart, forgetting that it is "only a movie." This scene only makes this film a work of art.
