Reviews
Skeletons in the Closet (2001)
The low budget really worked out for this movie
A handsome Jonathan Jackson plays Seth Reed, a troubled young adult trying to battle against Will(his father)'s accusations, whilst remaining mysterious.
Seth has a sad back-story, losing his mother at just 6 years old. He is a creepy character to watch, and there is clearly a lot of friction between father and son. He's unpredictable, and his actions make the viewers feel a little uneasy and unsure of what to expect.
the film is a little slow, not really giving it's audience enough credit, eg when Will is linking the necklace with an event, it takes him about 5 minutes to get it, where the audience get it straight away.
Uncle Buck (1989)
can't go wrong
**POSSIBLE SPOILERS**
'Uncle Buck' is a comedy/drama movie starring John Candy as Buck Russell, Jean Louisa Kelly, Macaulay Culkin and Gaby Hoffmann. When Cindy's father has a heart attack, someone is needed to watch the kids.
Buck is phoned as a last resort, (with the exception of un-contacted neighbour Marcie) and must arrive at their home as soon as possible. Cindy and Bob must go to stay with him in Indianapolis, while Buck (Bob's brother) stays with the children. Cindy doesn't trust Buck. She feels extremely uneasy and nervous about leaving the kids with him. He is a 40 year old, who is not married, has no children, gambles and hates to work. He is a light hearted character, and doesn't like to take things seriously. Things start off on the wrong foot. Miles and Maisy (Culkin and Hoffmann) don't remember him, and he doesn't even remember their names. Tia instantly clashes with him, as she does with her mother. Tia is a sarcastic, angry rebellious fifteen year old girl. She keeps her life to herself, but not her opinions. Buck warns her about the intentions of her boyfriend Bug (Jay Underwood), whom he can see straight through after meeting him.
We can't help but feel sorry for Buck. He grows to love the kids, yet Tia gives him an incredibly hard time. He is hated by Cindy.(She even folded him off of her and Bob's wedding photo) Chanice(Buck's girlfriend) catches Buck with flirtatious Marcie, and gets the wrong idea of what is going on, thanks to Tia, who is trying to make things miserable for Buck.
However, after Tia discovers Buck was right about Bug, we see a special relationship develop between uncle and niece. When Bob and Cindy return home, there is a heart-warming moment between mother and daughter. Uncle Buck's comedy comes fast and frequently. Buck has the greatest comedic role. My personal favourite Buck moments are when he talks to bug about the hatchet in the trunk, chat with Tia about shaving heads, and drill moments. The accompanying sound effects are so well suited here. They have a sci-fi effect, and make Buck seem rather scary to the character opposite, and funny to the viewers. Also note the way that Buck carries out household jobs, such as the washing, drying and ironing. One of the greatest lines in the movie is the 'tune-up' 'ritual killing' line (if you've seen the movie, you'll know!), beaten by the question and answers sequence between Miles and Buck. Brilliant! Miles also comes across as a comedic character. He also seems quite smart and mature for his age. This film is great to watch time and time again. It never loses its comedy value. If you have some time to spare, I suggest filling it with Uncle Buck. You won't be disappointed! My rating of Uncle Buck - 9/10.
The Wicker Man (1973)
Beautiful
**MAY CONTAIN POSSIBLE SPOILERS**
The Wicker Man tells the story of Sergeant Howie, who travels to Summerisle to investigate the disappearance of a young girl named Rowan Morrison. At first the people of Summerisle deny the existence of Rowan, but further investigation says otherwise.
Howie is determined to solve the case of the missing girl. He finds himself disgusted with the 'religious' beliefs of the island, and what is taught in their schools.Religion seems to be sex related, and Howie, as a Christian, is disgusted.
The people of Summerisle hold a sacrificial ceremony(in hope of good crops next year from the gods), which Howie participates in, unknown to them. He then sees Rowan is to be sacrificed and tries to intervene, but things aren't what they seem to be. Howie then meets 'the wicker man' in a superb finale to the movie.
A brilliant movie, which I have heard classified as a 'weird film'.
The Wicker Man earns my rating of 8/10.
Idle Hands (1999)
9.5/10
I first saw this on TV in 2001(I think), and loved it, so I decided to purchase it. It tells the story of Anton(Devon Sawa),a lazy teenage lad who's hand gets possessed. Him and his two best friends Mick and Pnub(Seth Green and Elden Henson) try to save their town, in particular a girl named Molly(Jessica Alba), from a horrific end, with the help of Debi(Vivica A.Fox),who has been trying to trace the the 'idle hand'. Idle Hands remains my favourite comedy horror. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants an enjoyable movie.
Pet Sematary II (1992)
so what if it's in the bottom 100?
Most people didn't enjoy this movie at all. Maybe due to comparing it to Pet Sematary 1. But I actually thought this was as enjoyable as the first, and I know I'm in the minority there! Both great, both different.
**SPOILERS**
Jeff Matthews(Edward Furlong) and his father Chase(Anthony Edwards)move to get away from the Hollywood lifestyle after the death of Jeff's mother Renee, and meet Drew Gilbert, who's dog Zowey is shot and killed.....or is it? Jeff and Drew are told the story of the Creeds, and the Indian Burial Ground, where they buried Zowey. But then Gus(Drew's step dad) comes along and things get worse.Gus, although the bad guy for most of the movie, is a pretty cool character. Jeff gets the idea that since they brought Zowie and Gus back from the dead, he can do the same with his mother. And does so with the help of Gus. But is it a good idea?
I really liked this movie, no matter how bad most others seem to think it is. But it's all a matter of opinion. I would personally give it 8/10.
Noah Knows Best (2000)
Hilarious!!
I hate the fact that this show was cancelled. Although most of the cast aren't really well known, this show didn't fail to impress. There were many great quotes, which I am surprised havent made it onto IMDB's memorable quotes. Noah Knows Best is about a New York family. Brother and sister(Noah and Megan Beznik) live with their parents, Noah's best friends D.J and Alana, and Megans best friend Camille. A great young cast with many laughs throughout each show. Another notable appearance would be Alton Martin(D.J's older brother). He adds to the comedy of this program. To sum it up in one sentence I would say that Noah Knows Best is hilarious with a talented young cast.
Quella villa accanto al cimitero (1981)
You'll either love it or hate it
Well, Im one that loves it. This movie was great! Not much gore, and the blood was unrealistic, but in general, the film was enjoyable. The House By The Cemetery tells the story of a New York family that go to live in Boston where Norman(the father) is working. Their young son, Bob, is warned by a little girl not to go into the house, and Bob tries passing on this message to his parents, but fails. They find something weird about the house, and about the babysitter, Ann.
