Nicotine Stains (2013)
Smoking CAN Kill!
This is Gennaro Desposito first full length feature. Nicotine Stains is described as being in the same vein as Maniac, Combat Shock and How To Get Ahead In Advertising by the director Gennaro Desposito. For me he succeeded for the most part. Another thing is that this film is a personal statement of the film maker's with experiences he had in the past which he talks about elsewhere.
Even though going by the trailer I knew I would like this it really surprised me at how much I ended up getting into this. I was glued to the screen the whole time and felt I had discovered a movie I felt I would want to re~watch again and again.
What we have here is a man who falls into a catalyst that triggers off an adverse effect in his mind. Actor Matt Fowler does a great job with this role. For me he had the eyes for this if that makes sense to my reader. He could articulate with them and it was effective.
Naturally this being a horror movie there are kills. These are done very well. Aggressively Charlie does his thing and it feels right. Along with this we get some nice juicy gore as well with chopped up body parts and some intestine action.
My only real negative here is that with one of the kills wish it was more graphic. It is perfectly executed in the it actually made me cringe but we don't get to see what I will term as the juicy bit. Just feel it is a shame that it was never shown. Not to spoil to much the same kind of kill is depicted in Irreversible and Drive to name two to great effect. But then maybe the crew felt they couldn't do justice to the effect so decided to keep it to people's imaginations which is fair enough.
Anyway I thoroughly enjoyed this film and look forwards to any other full length features Gennaro Desposito does in the future.
Thanatomorphose (2012)
Brilliant!
Thanatomorphose is a movie I have been waiting a very long time to view and was blessed when the director, Mr Éric Falardeau, was gracious enough to supply me with a link to review this film. Let me tell you I was very excited at being given this chance to check out this piece of extreme horror cinema!
Beautifully shot with this wonderful sound track of violin playing. Use of interesting lenses for certain scenes that I always appreciate as well as the more mundane scenes looked amazing as well with their colour scenes. My eye is attracted to this type of thing. It feels alive and not clinical.
We have this coalition of her life taking a turn for the worst then her body following by falling apart from an unknown illness or even poisoning from something that is possibly seeping down from her damaged ceiling above her bed.
Naturally there is effects in this. After all we have a woman who is rotting away!
Effects were great. From firstly her skin appearing to be bruised to slowly appearing to go rotten. Then there are incidents though out where things slowly begin to happen to her body until the finale.
Acting wise I felt all the characters fit in. There was no 'odd man out' so to speak. Our lead plays her character well in her life that is falling apart from both the outside and within.
In the end I am so glad to finally get this chance to view Thanatmorphose, it was exactly what I was waiting for. When you get a chance to view please do so as you won't be disappointed.
The Pyramid (2013)
The Pyramid...a venture with heart
I can see that there was a lot of enthusiasm placed into this film. Passion for horror, movies like Hellraiser, Evil Dead and to a point Demons. But in stating this not exactly clones either. Just enough to see where ideas came from and that is it.
Visually it is beautifully shot, I liked the how it was done. Also I liked how the demons looked. Along with this I thought the gore looked alright as well, bit of an influence from 70s Italian horror I would even say.
Story wise in the big picture you have an idea of what is happening.
But here are the down points for me.
Felt the storyline was a bit too hodgepodge for me. Certain things didn't feel right. Others seem comical. I confess to giggling when I first started watching, but pretty much just for the first couple of minutes of the actual movie minutes before some demon and a gore scene came my way. In some ways the stories felt incomplete to a point. But on thinking about it they were art of a anthology so guess they were limited to what could be done.
Also in the first segment there is quite a bit of male full frontal nudity yet for the rest of the film no female full frontal. I know this really isn't a real big deal but for these movies it did seem really strange.
Other than this another thing was at first the demons seem pretty weak and stupid but then later they are able to have the upper hand and be strong. I think this was just a way to get the storyline to a certain point though which for unfortunately is kind of lacking.
I didn't hate this movie as alas I have seen a lot worse. There is a lot of heart put into this but unfortunately it could of been way more. Maybe if there was a lot more gore, plus some gratuitous female nudity as well as more realistic scenes where it felt realistic how an encounter folds out this could have been something really worthy. In saying this the demons / possessed were kinda cool though.
Hate Crime (2012)
Hate Crime to the Extreme!
Just finished re~watching this and have to say I liked it even more this time around. A true sense of extreme horror cinema by a truly talented up and coming film maker James Cullen Bressack!
What do we have here anyway?
Night time, we have a Jewish family of Mom, Dad, two brothers and their older sister celebrating the youngest boys birthday. DSLR at the ready the father is filming the proceedings. Hearing a strange sound he goes to investigate. Three Neo Nazi thugs invade the birthday party. Taking the kids and their father upstairs they wind up shooting the birthday boy. Everything goes to hell for the family from here on in!
We have 1, 2 and 3, Neo Nazi thugs who originally go in to scare a Jewish family away from their town. But due to the excitement and being drug fueled they escalate the situation into something truly terrifying for the family that ends in tragedy. 1 and 3 are especially crazy with how they move and their expressions and what have you! Also the whole family truly seem terrified! Film maker James Cullen Bressack certainly knows how to get something special out of his actors that is for certain. with the Neo Nazi's i can only guess he got his actors to get a bit drunk just with how they move, or they are dancers or something it truly is that great.
Yes this is a SOV film and done very very well. No pointless shaking you believe what you see, that it is a home invasion and the perpetrators decide to film it.
Naturally with the violence there is practical effects for the injuries involved. These looked great, nice gore along with other things I prefer not to give away. Also, for me it is important anyway, the blood looks good!
All up for me this is a great film from an up and coming talent who is with keeping an eye on. James Cullen Bressack has big things ahead of him if he keeps it up! Anyway this is getting it's much deserved release and if you like a well made and graphic depiction of the reality of violence this is worth a look at!
