I thoroughly enjoyed it
10 April 2024
This film really ticked all of my boxes.

Murder mystery = yes Humourous. = yes Stylish. = yes Gentle. = yes I just loved everything about it. It's gentle humour enveloped me like a warm hug. The stylish fashions were a beautiful nod to the period in which the film takes place, 1953, and you get a selection of the full range of English day and evening wear. This really helps to set the time, and that's important.

I absolutely loved the performances by all of the cast but Saoirse Ronan and Sam Rockwell. Around them, the other actors sparkle like jewels and when, as you do, you recognise a face, you welcome them, as if they've come to a party that you're hosting. Oh, it's all so lovely and comforting, like a huge embrace from your favourite person.

Gripping depiction
8 April 2024
The acting in the depiction of the events leading up to the infamous interview, is amazing. There is a quiet show of skill, as everyone melds together to show the sometimes awkward run up to getting the information in front of the Newsnight team, leading to them to pursue the story and arrange the interview. I absolutely loved all of the performances, as each cast member seems to have been chosen to exhibit their astonishing gift in this piece. The writing is really good as well, and the sensitivity towards this diabolical subject is at all times, observed.

I am glad that I watched this film before reading any articles about it. I made up my own mind. I feel that it is important that a film like this be made, as the awful events that happened to those girls, still has repercussions.

I understand that there may be moves to put Andrew back in the public eye, where he absolutely does not belong and hopefully this film will help to prevent that.

Frasier: Cranes Go Caribbean (2001)
Season 8, Episode 24

Loved Claire, she was perfect for
24 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Frasier, or even too good for him. She's much better than any other women that he matched with, but he doesn't stay with her. Found this season less than compelling but loved Patricia Clarkson as Claire. Surely the waiters could have done better with her?

Frasier is so dislikable in this episode, fussy and selfish! And then he behaves in a completely stupid, crass way - sleeping with Claire and then dumping her to chase some other woman. Why didn't the writers ever sort out Frasier's problem with women? I despised the character of Frasier after this episode. He should gone and boiled his head!

House of the Dragon (2022– )

Gosh but this is so BAD
13 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I'm only giving it two stars because the dragons are fantastic! For a prequel, this is spectacularly way off the mark and sloppy! For a start, the young actors at the beginning of the the season, bear very little resemblance to the actors who take the characters through to the later episodes. This is a particular bug bear of mine and it's LAZY. REALLY LAZY. Who can forget the DREADFUL young Lily in Harry Potter? She looked nothing like Daniel Radcliffe and her eyes were brown, instead of blue! Bad casting. These film makes get paid a bundle, so to miss something SO fundamental is just a poor effort. INCREDIBLY POOR.

I didn't think much of the storyline either, in fact I was quite shocked at how weak the narrative was. It seemed overly contrived and then badly executed. We had been given a few hints in GoT of what was to come, and it seemed so juicy. Warriors riding around on dragons, the Targaryens with their madness, incest and audacity. Should have been a winner. Not stodgy, not lost in the depths of some dusty history.

And why do the internal scenes have to be filmed on some gloomy set? Was there a power shortage ?

Had they no lighting rigs. Did they film in it using the torch app on the crew's phones? It's so bloody dark. Haven't the makers heard of LIGHTING. I know that the director is fond of dark murky looking filming, but get a grip, light your work so that it can be seen. We have a state of the art TV and even it had difficulty in making this watchable. I gave up trying to watch it on my tablet, and others that I have spoken to have had serious problems actually viewing it. What must it be like for anyone with eye sight problems? If a programme is not truly accessible, doesn't that make the programme makers disrespectful of their audience?

And what is up with King's Landing? I know that this tale takes place a few generations before GoT, but the place that they've created has no likeness to the King's Landing of the Lannisters. I know that the maker's switched locations, but with the magic of filming, they could have created somewhere that looks like a historical recreation of King's Landing.

I also think that some of actors were miscast, and as such , I don't think that they were truly credible in this series. There is a clear lack of chemistry between some of the leads who are meant to be romantically linked. Without chemistry, the whole endeavour falls apart. This is a serious concern, so much so that I probably won't watch anymore episodes of this series. That's a shame because it could have been so good, but this dark, badly written, lazily conceived piece of nonsense is just awful.

The Gilded Age: Warning Shots (2023)
Season 2, Episode 6

Oh dear...
4 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Not enough Bertha! The episode moves along very well, with one or two surprises. I have come to adore the cast and eagerly wait for all future episodes. The costumes and detailing are sumptuous, the writing on a scope that one can only marvel at. It's my go to TV series, satisfying all of my cravings for drama, intrigue and wit. I am watching it all over again from the start, recovering from surgery and allowing myself to be transported to New York in 1880's. Every time I enter their world, there is another raft of details to excite and delight me. For instance, from watching The Gilded Age, I have done some of my own research, and am now aware of certain facts that I knew nothing about before.

WOW
14 November 2023
Made me scream like a little girl! If we had been eating popcorn, it would've been all over the place!

The thrills, even when you know that they're coming, are scare-tastic!

I love the way that the audience is lulled into a sense of false security and then ... I kept on jumping and grabbing my other half for safety. He thought it was thrilling too, and didn't object to my seeking protection in his arms.

The various twists and turns were well executed and because I wanted to let the whole story unfold, I deliberately stayed away from reviews and spoilers.

Great cast, great writing, you couldn't ask for more. Hold onto your hats, because this is an amazing thriller.

The Buccaneers (2023– )

What on earth...
13 November 2023
Possessed the makers to attempt to make an adaptation of The Buccaneers? Well the positives are the scenery and the flowers are stunning, but the rest of it is turgid beyond belief! It's trying to be a Bridgerton, but it's not as witty, sexy or clever. And what on earth made Apple denigrate Edith Wharton? She's a serious author, whose writing and insights into a woman's place in the late 19th century are an amazing reflection of the hypocrisy that surrounded the repressive marriage market for some women.

She must be turning in her grave, shocked at the mess that the writers have made of her work. It's just terrible, really, really bad. The acting is dreadful, although the young cast are pretty. There's a lot of screaming and over the top dramatic gestures, but instead of showing the restrictive environment that these women struggled with, it makes far too light of the situation. It's a clash of colourful mayhem, accompanied by a yawn making soundtrack. I just wanted to take it all apart and put it back together, in a different way. Poor Edith Wharton, what did she do to deserve this?

Criminally bad waste of time
14 September 2023
Bad script, lazily bad in fact. Confusing back story information, some characters had a backstory, but some didn't. Not everyone will have read the comics, the fans can sometimes just come for the films alone. All future directors of DC movies should be made to watch and learn from Man if Steel and the long edition of Justice League; go to Zach Snyder school, please, for all of our sakes. It would make the whole experience so much richer.

Poor acting, but that's probably because of the terrible script - 😠. Such a shame to see lovely actors in this tripe, but hey ho.

The editing was a problem, could this have been a longer film, with better storytelling? The score is heavy and charmless, as though picked up from a budget shop bargain bin, it did nothing to enhance the experience.

In fact the whole thing was a colossal waste of effort and resources, and given these austere times, it's irresponsible to be so wasteful. I feel very strongly about this, if a thing's worth doing, than it's worth doing well. Liked the skateboarding.

Oh and please, let's not have anymore made-up languages where characters speak whole scenes in an imaginary text. Let's just have accents, as there are swathes of us who are either dyslexic, or poorly sighted, or who cannot read, so stop ignoring us.

Thank goodness to see NPH in something good and witty
27 March 2023
This did remind me of Sex and the City at times, with it's designer clothes, apartment porn and great looking cast. However, it's much better than that, witty, clever and touching in parts. NPH is very good in this, so much so that it almost removes the taste of the Awful HIMYM, in which he was wasted. He shines here, as do his co-stars, especially Tisha Campbell. She's warm and frothy, soft-hearted and gorgeous. The writing is good and the coming second season should be really funny and clever. Coming from the writers who bought us Frasier and Modern Family, we are assured of quite a few laughs and some good observational comedy.

Enough already, hurry up and renew for more episodes
18 February 2023
Dear Amazon Prime, why do you play with my emotions so? You give me great tv to watch, and then you take your own sweet time to renew one of the best detective series with the Great Alfred Molina? It beggers belief! How can you treat me so cruelly? The rest of the the cast are amazing, the locations stunning and you've left me on a cliff hanger. I am trying to keep calm, but really, how do you all sleep at night? Elle-Maija Tailfeathershas been a revelation, she's so poised and such a good right-hand person, Rossif Sutherland is handsome, flawed and yet a good detective. Tantoo Cardinal is wonderful and strong as the matriarch of am indigenous family. Please Amazon, hurry up and make some more?

Don't bother watching!
20 June 2020
I write this as a person who has never read the books, and came to this effort as AF novice. Right from the beginning, I found AF insufferable, privileged, and a real bore. The whole premise lacked warmth, intelligence and wit. It was dull, and a complete waste of time and money. There are people who are starving and if you took the budget of this rubbish, you could do some real good.

What on earth convinced any of the actors to touch this project with a barge pole? Ah yes, money. This is about as cynical use of a film budget as I have ever come across.

In short, horrible film, rotten script, terrible direction and bad acting. Bad, bad, bad!

You know things are bad when you're in the cinema, mentally ticking off your to list i...
21 November 2018
Bad script ... Great special effects ... This film almost loses all of the warmth for the main characters, that the first film engendered. It's a Di- Sars- ta darling, and the writing and wooly plot are to blame. C'mon, you've got a great cast and and all of the special effects that money can buy, this film should be SO much better, but it's a yawn fest.

Everything else, the costumes, the acting, the sets are all bang on, but it's an empty gesture without a solid script.

I'm beginning to think that you can have too much of a good thing and that really the world doesn't need to hear anymore from this franchise. It's a cold, calculated money grubbing exercise, and it should stop. The magic is over.

Dark and moody Daphne du Maurier adaptation
22 April 2014
OK so first things first the sound is a bit dodgy, but persevere because the screen crackles with tension. The writing is good and the filming style doesn't disappoint. It's suitably dark, and no one, not even out our heroine Mary Yellen, looks pretty in that vapid way that some costume dramas enjoy. She's a bit grubby, but still attractive, so she seems more realistic, because she isn't portrayed like Anne of Green Shipwrecks. The locations are treated like another character in the story. The acting is exciting, with huge amounts of magnetism. Each character has an interesting back story that is sometimes hinted at, sometimes explained. The thing I noticed first is that everyone is dirty, their hands, their hair, their clothes, and of they would be. Smuggling is a dirty business, this production lets you see just how dangerous and desperate it is.
