Why Pay For This Movie When You Can See It For Free on YouTube?
11 February 2013
I'm not really sure why they called this movie The Haunting in Connecticut 2 when all of it takes place in Georgia, other than to tie it to the equally not scary The Haunting In Connecticut from a few years back, but my best advise is to pass on this one until you can see it for free on cable because you will get more scares out of this story on cable on Destination America. We were pleasantly surprised when this story began and the little girl started talking about seeing a Mr. Gordy and realized that this story was based on a haunted house story we saw on the Destination America series A Haunting. Sorry to report, the episode on A Haunting is twice as scary as this clunker with probably a tenth of the effects budget. Abigail Spencer is pretty good as the mom who sees dead people and it's good to see Katee "Starbuck" Sackhoff in something other than Battlestar Gallactica, but this movie generates almost no scares and builds virtually no tension. And once you get to the meat of the back story and it tries to get all serious, you're just left with little to be afraid of. So take a pass and check out A Haunting for more frights and a much more realistic story.

Sinister (I) (2012)

Not nearly as scary as you all made it out to be
22 October 2012
So I read a lot of the reviews on here before going out to see Sinister on the second weekend after it was released and these reviews got me all fired up to see it with all the "scariest horror movie in a decade" reviews. But alas, if these people find this movie one of the scariest movies ever, would they even be able to survive The Exorcist, the first two Halloweens (the originals), the first Friday the 13th, or most episodes of Paranormal Witness on SyFy? While I thoroughly enjoyed this film, with its inventive take on the too tired found footage genre, only once or twice did I actually jump in my seat and those instances were not followed up by much to make me scared. I have to admit, I was sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for something to happen, as this film is creepy and does a good job of making you uneasy, but by the time it was over I realized, "I never really got scared". If you are interested in a decent mystery with a "sinister" plot, thus the title I guess, and can take some somewhat gory images, then this movie is recommended. But if you are a true horror fan, don't go see this expecting to be scream out loud frightened or cover your eyes horrified. No real gore, no true frights, just an interesting story that in the end is a bit predictable but worth a look.

The of the Paranormal Activity series
24 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
So me and my wife go check out PA3 Sunday (she loves horror movies, I go and then get freaked out getting ready for work by myself in the morning after she leaves!) with mid-level expectations. She didn't think the first two were all that scary, but I found them to really screw with your mind by what you can't see, which is what really scares me. We were both let down. I read online that some of the scenes from the trailer were not in the Theatrical release, but I think almost NONE of the scenes from the trailer made it in the finished product. I understand the producers' intention, to give us something we aren't expecting, but since this series already has a built-in audience how about giving us less in the trailer and more in the film? Not using scenes that were truly riveting in the trailer means we are invariably going to be let down by what they did use, and that was the case here. Kudos for letting us actually see some sort of demon this time, and the scene with the babysitter was exhilarating, but the end, though pulse pounding at times, is truly lame and leaves all sorts of questions as to how this could truly have happened to these girls when they were young and allow them to live "normal" lives as adults. And Satan worshiping women? The whole end is a farce. My suggestion for the fourth film, and you know there will be a 4th. Drop the found footage angle (it was all too convenient for this one that the mom was dating a guy who loves to film "everything") and bring in a real horror master to end this one with a bang. People are going to get sick of the found footage cliché anyway and we've just about milked all the story out of this family we can muster, so how about just giving us a good demonic possession movie that wraps this whole thing up? Please, so we don't have to keep wasting our time with this crap!!!!
