Good exploration of poly relationship
10 April 2022
The French location. The actors, and the music are all beautiful. The real reason to see the film is to appreciate the complexity of a poly relationship that lasts for awhile but eventually ends due to one partner being unable to share the other. This is unfortunately the fate of many poly relationships.

I am fortunate to be in a successful happy poly relationship lasting almost 28 years so I know that they can work but most people just can't handle the intensity and cannot accept the boundaries. This is a good film to see if you are contemplating getting involved in a poly relationship.

Too confusing
28 March 2022
I had to see this film three times to figure out the plot. I still feel confused by the three different women. They all looked too similar. I thought Jane Greer and Rhonda Fleming were the same woman wearing slightly different clothes and hair!

The first time I saw it, the only good thing I noticed was the cinematography. Excellent lighting and shadows.

The second time I saw it, I was impressed by Robert Mitchum's great style and many good one-liners.

Now the third time, I finally noticed Kirk Douglas.

I still think this film is not one of best noirs, but I see that people who like femme fatale characters would like this one.

I personally think the film needed some editing and tightening and better distinction between the women characters. I would have cut out the Rhonda Fleming character completely. She was unnecessary. Jane Greer could have been given the assignment of being the lawyer's secretary for the simple task she had to do.

The book is better but the film is worth seeing
12 March 2022
The film distorts the book by overemphasizing certain things, leaving out others, and changing certain key points. However, it's still a powerful film because the distortions don't change the important basic point which is the loneliness of all the characters and their attempts to connect with someone.

Alan Arkin is perfect as John Singer, he remains true to the spirit of the character in the book, no distortion there. He's the reason I rate the film so highly.

The book was published in 1940, 20 years before To Kill A Mockingbird, published in 1960. The classic film versions of both films came out in the 1960's so many people think they were contemporary books, especially because the film Lonely Hunter was in color. The film version of Mockingbird was in black and white and seems truer to the earlier time period. What's interesting is how little changed in the 20 years between the time of the two books published.

Beautiful story of last people on earth
12 March 2022
I am dying of pancreatic cancer right now so for me, this film had a special poignancy. If you care about humanity and appreciate living every moment in the present, you are likely to enjoy this film. It's also about the joy and power of film to document people's existence on this planet.

Kudos to the director for including so many delightful film clips, especially the clip from a rarely seen interview with Dennis Potter. Most of the clips are well-known such as Monty Python, Buster Keaton, etc.

Realities of civil war
6 January 2022
Amazing footage of civilians who try to defend the town of Homs in Syria over years of attacks by Bashar Assad. The central figure is almost killed many times and it is intense to watch him and his friends figure out how to survive the ongoing battles.

The terrible truth is that they were begging for help from the outside world and very little came through. This film provoked mixed feelings of inspiration by the fighters' perseverance and yet despair that all the sacrifices were in vain.

Difficult to watch but I do it to honor the sacrifices made
4 January 2022
This was a painful film to watch. Most of the film focuses on the men in the camp and the two men trying to get out to contact the Resistance. They don't get to write the report or talk to anyone about what happened until the last 20 minutes of the film. The agony they suffer just to get to that point is excruciating.

And then it's a different kind of suffering to see that they are not believed because the enormity of the crime seemed incredible. The men must have felt so frustrated that they had risked everything to tell the truth and other men at the camp died helping them yet the outcome they wanted did not occur.

This film is about man's inhumanity to man. They did get some kindness on their journey otherwise they would not have survived so they had to be thankful for that.... But the larger tragedy is overwhelming...

Brings the book to life!
11 November 2021
I greatly enjoyed the book The Diaries of Anne Lister and was afraid that a filmed version would ruin it for me. But no! The first episode, at least, really brightened the bad mood I was in before I started watching. The actor playing Anne is excellent! I will watch the whole series now....

I liked the whole series and this episode is the best of all. It crystallizes the elements of history and creative rage into a story of beauty and emotional depth that should touch the coldest heart. Kudos to all involved.

See for the music and Chadwick Boseman
6 August 2021
If you like the music of James Brown, and you like the acting of Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis, and Octavia Spencer, you will enjoy this film. The performances are all excellent, including the sidemen in the band and the women in his life. You see both his talent and his faults and his pain in childhood as well as adulthood.

The only criticism I have is the editing and the director who approved the final cut. It has a nonlinear narrative which might have been ok but the editing is so choppy that it really mars the film. I would use this in a film class as an example of bad editing so that people can see the importance of editing. Bad editing reduces a great film to a not so great film.

Belongs on double bill with Judas and the Black Messiah
26 July 2021
I was very impressed by this film and am glad it was finally released on DVD. It is still relevant in 2021 and has even deeper meaning given how little has changed since 1968. It would make a great double bill with the recent film Judas and the Black Messiah. Similar themes but with significant differences.

I hope this film becomes more well-known. It truly deserves attention by everyone interested in civil rights and the political conflict between people who want to be non-violent and the people who are willing to use weapons. In the middle are people who just need some money to live day to day and get basic needs met.

Interesting but some problems
2 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I liked the basic concept of a white guy who gets connected to an older black man who becomes a father figure. The main problem was that I didn't believe the black man and his daughter would forgive him or accept him after the truth came out about his racist attitudes and behavior. I'm white and I won't tolerate a racist white guy like that so I know that if I was black I would definitely not tolerate a racist white guy in my life.

I also found it hard to believe that the white guy was able to have some non-racist attitudes and behaviors and then at other times horribly racist and oblivious attitudes and behaviors. Like when he blurts out all the racist ideas at the table full of black folks at the mayor's gala. How could he be that oblivious to his offensiveness? I guess there can be people like that but it seemed weird that no one confronted him and said something like "Hey, you're an educated guy, you're a writer, why the hell do you think things like that and say things like that?"

And why didn't the daughter and father discuss the guy's racism when they were alone? I feel like there needed to be a scene where they said something like "Hey, we like some things about this guy but gee, he's a horrible racist and that's just unacceptable!"

I guess people should see it for themselves. The white guy was an alcoholic so that was definitely part of his problem but not an excuse in my opinion.

They should have consulted a psychiatrist
7 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
No psychiatrist would introduce himself or a family member to a family member of a patient who committed suicide. That's so basic to ethics and malpractice liabilities that I don't understand why any writer got this storyline approved. Boundaries in mental health are critical to the work so I wouldn't see this film due to this breach of professional practice.

Wow amazing Science Fiction!
29 May 2021
This is science fiction that is character-driven on the surface and underneath propelled by intense psychological, philosophical, and political ideas. It presents a brutal confrontation of the facts of life for people desperate to survive and people who think they've created a utopia but don't realize until too late how wrong they were. I have now watched all four seasons and am so impressed by the work done by everyone on this project. It's superior entertainment that is of the people, by the people, and for the people.....

excellent political suspense thriller
23 May 2021
I really enjoyed the first season. Haven't seen the second season, but very satisfied by the first six episodes which I practically binge watched. Interesting focus on Australia and China vs. The USA. Very intense, with compelling story and characters. Recommended if you like international politics and drama. If you like this series, you'd probably also like Black Earth Rising, with Michaela Coel and John Goodman, about England, France, and the hidden truths about the Rwandan genocide.

Important film but problematic
27 April 2021
I always appreciate stories about the complicated nature of sexual assault situations. I like the fact that the film shows the difficulty of finding appropriate medical care after an assault.

However, what doesn't seem to get mentioned in reviews or promotional material is the fact that the boyfriend is an arrogant ass who is pressuring her to go to the hospitals and the police when she doesn't want to go! It's all an ego issue for him. If he thinks she slept with someone else consensually, he feels bad about himself, but if he thinks she's been raped he feels less upset about it. It's as if it's about him, not her! It really made me angry that the boyfriend ignores her repeated requests to go home. She just wants to lay down and recover from what happened.

I felt just as upset about the boyfriend as I did about the sexual assault. And of course, her girlfriend didn't make enough effort to help her either.

So just be prepared for feeling upset about a lot of things in this movie. The assault, the hospitals, the friends, etc.

Mix of Octavia Butler and Zenna Henderson
30 March 2021
If you're a fan of science fiction, you'll recognize the writers I mentioned in the headline. I was surprised the script wasn't based on stories by Butler or Henderson because the plot seemed so similar. Anyway, if you like Henderson's stories about The People, you'll like this film.

I thought all the female leads were excellent. I'd love to see more films like this showing three generations of women with special abilities.

This was terrible
29 October 2020
I am very familiar with the history of lobotomies. I was one of the producers of an hour long radio documentary on the subject for National Public Radio and my own uncle had a lobotomy.

Unfortunately, this film is an abuse of the suffering and misery of people who have mental illness and people who have been traumatized by family members with these problems.

The creators of this film perhaps thought they were making something beautiful out of that suffering but my experience of it was that the artistic aspects of the film failed to overcome the horrible sadness and despair of everyone in the film. Pretty images cannot redeem the overwhelmingly horrible content.

The only people who might enjoy this film are either very sick people or people who have been lucky enough to never know any such suffering and have a detached curiosity or people who are using drugs to alter the state of their consciousness.

Not really about gender identity
16 June 2020
This is a strange film that purports to be about gender identity but didn't seem to be about gender at all. The lead character J happens to be non-binary but the film is mostly about all kinds of other experiences in J's family, particularly about J's sister, an artist, getting married to a man from Iran, who is having issues with his own family. J's medical transition seemed to be a secondary plot and J seemed to be more concerned about not wanting to grow up at all rather than being concerned with gender.

I wonder whether the director thought the gender issue was just a trendy way to pitch the film. I also wonder whether the director was trying to show that gender is the least important thing to worry about in life.

This is the kind of film that would make me want to attend a question and answer session with the director.

Very strange film, see on double bill with Eraserhead
14 June 2020
This is one of the strangest films I've ever seen. I can't recommend it, unless you like very bizarre films. Belongs on a double bill with Eraserhead or The Lobster. If there is a film festival of extremely bizarre films, this one belongs in it.

I suppose it would have been more entertaining if I was high on cannabis. But I suspect this film could trigger a nasty experience if you're tripping on acid. In fact, the film could trigger some disturbing traumatized responses if you have any history with infertility, babies who died, or bad boyfriends who never grew up.

Fascinating story of woman with MS
21 December 2019
For me, the interesting thing about this film was seeing the possibility that while the woman was unconscious, she was actually having out of body experiences and feeling at peace in a beautiful spiritual cosmic sense. Of course, not everyone with MS is likely to be having the same experience but it had never occurred to me that someone with MS might be experiencing that. I've known people with MS who could no longer communicate and I sincerely hope they felt something close to that.

Two Mind-blowing Scary Images in this episode
21 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The shock of seeing the D.C. women's mouths sewn shut underneath their silencing red cloths was one of the scariest things I've seen so far on this show (and there have been plenty other shocking scary things done to the women on this show). That image will stay with me forever as a symbol of what the religious right wants to do.

The other really frightening thing was seeing the Lincoln Memorial with Lincoln's head and upper body destroyed. Plus the huge cross erected on the D.C. Mall, showing that the theocracy had taken over the Capitol. It was like seeing my worst nightmare unfolding. And unfortunately, it seems like it really could happen someday soon with the current administration. This episode hit me in the pit of my stomach as a foreshadowing of the future. I hope we can prevent this kind of thing from actually happening.

The Time Tunnel (1966–1967)

Oh no, they're still out there!
24 November 2019
I've always had fond memories of this series from childhood but I assumed I missed the last episode because I never saw an ending where they finally returned home to stay. Over the years, I have wondered if I could ever find that last show which would give me some closure.

I FINALLY discover only now that the show was abruptly cancelled and they never did have a finale. So I've been in limbo all these years for no good reason. Wow. Well, we're all still in limbo. I'm not the only one left hanging and wondering what happened to them...

I was ten years old at the time of the original broadcasts and was really mesmerized by that time tunnel. I've collected hourglasses and egg timers and often hummed the title song when I am in a hurry on my way somewhere. Those staccato high notes trigger the impulse to break into a run... I think I wanted to escape my own life and wished I had a time tunnel I could run into too....

Losing Chase (1996 TV Movie)

Good portrayal of depression
22 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Helen Mirren does a good job of portraying a wife and mother who has depression. Beau Bridges is also good as the clueless husband who means well but just doesn't get what his wife needs and wants. Kyra Sedgewick has the hardest job of acting and she shows her range of ability in so many different emotions throughout the film. It certainly was believable that she is taken by surprise when Helen Mirren falls in love with her. It was clear to me that she thought of the Helen Mirren character as a mother figure. I was glad that she wasn't freaked out and was able to share a warm goodbye when they parted.

My main criticism was the ending and the title. Losing Chase implies death and I kept expecting that through the film. I don't know if that was intentional or not but I felt confused at the end when that didn't happen. Also, the voiceover at the end was Helen Mirren but it would have made more sense to have Kyra Sedgewick do the final summation about how she lost Chase. Helen Mirren doing the final narration made me feel the title should have been Losing Elizabeth.

Hmm.... mixed feelings on this one
11 November 2019
What I liked about this film: the acting was excellent, very evocative of the emotions of the situations being shown.

But I'm not sure what exactly happened in certain scenes. I guess we're supposed to assume the details don't really matter or that he's so drunk he can't remember or doesn't want to remember. The ending is what confused me the most. Was he imagining something that he wished had happened, or just felt better knowing that's what he would do if he could?

I suppose this film will appeal to people who had alcoholics in their family. I didn't, so unfortunately, it was a bit too confusing for me.

Unsatisfying
13 July 2019
I suppose it's a cultural difference but I thought it was bizarre that they never called the police and did not take the girl to an MD or a hospital at the end. I also thought it was strange that even at the end it was never clear who the kidnappers were nor was it clear how that young woman Mariana was related to these people. I was also annoyed by the mother's irrational hysteria throughout. So overall I didn't like it.

The good parts were the beautiful landscapes and small town scenes that evoked a European style of living. I guess I didn't like any of the people in the film, except for Javier Bardem.....
