Doctor Slump (2024)
Shin Hye eye candy... rest is vanilla
Enjoyable yes... swoon worthy yes... original, clever and limited cringe screenplay... no... some segments are just too cheesy... even for KDrama standards... they just ran out of screenplay ideas on this one.
But Shin Hye has never looked lovelier and it's hard not to stare at her eyes and that gorgeous hair.
I buy into the chemistry as well as the topic of PTSD and depression and it's covered sincerely and authentically for the most part.
Other areas of the story such as getting together, ripped apart, getting together, ripped apart again can either be enjoyed or found to be very annoying so the ride YMMV.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Subspace Rhapsody (2023)
It might be your cup of tea, but it's quality tea
You may not be a musical fan and it's absolutely understandable. Putting that aside and critiquing the story, the musician numbers, and the actors putting their voices out there... it's is VERY WELL done and enjoyable. Having it weaved in with a sci-fi explanation whether believable or not satisfied the suspended belief required.
Chong's emotional solo paid off and of course there was no doubt Celia, a Grammy award winner would get the star number.
There was a good laugh with the Klingons performing K-pop and the pun and subtext was very loud and clear.
All in all they boldly went and I was impressed... although I don't see myself watching it again.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Charades (2023)
Admit it... you got a few chuckles
A great break from some of the seriousness lately focusing on Schapel's brewing relationship and how the crew rally behind Spock's condition and the ruse needed to deal with potential in laws coming. What was even more sweet was similar to the Kelvin coverage of the topic, Amanda Grayson's experiences and how Spock came to recognize her challenges.
I didn't love the alien species here but they were the bridge to build the story and have Chapel do what she needed to do and say what she needed to say.
And the blend of the hurt T'Pring felt greatly enhanced all the feels and emotions of this episode. Yes it's an escape for "standard" Star Trek fare, but once in a while it's great to have it... because we know the Gorn are going to build up to the season finale leaving begging for Season 3...
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Ad Astra Per Aspera (2023)
Give Yetide Badaki another standing ovation
Can actor is only as good as the script so lets give credit there first. But it was clear to me right from the first legal argument Yetide was for real and made the character so much more than just the script. The frustration of the past, the discernment to find the loophole, the searing eyes and voice carrying the weight of all Illyrians. They knew they had to cast the lawyer correctly and they absolutely did. Wow.
The episode itself was clearly built with care and thoughtfulness of the past with ToS themes. The cries of persecutions of past history tying to present issues along with fictional future made Commander Riley's case even that more moving.
Isanghan byeonhosa Woo Young-woo (2022)
Bursting with charm and message
To be able to weave in the A, B, C and even D storylines as elegantly while honoring the authenticity of a disabled person's challenges is simply outrageous.
I haven't watched something so delightful in years.
Sure there are K-Drama moments, but they come at a time to relief tension built up. The cases string together well and have satisfying payoff towards the end of the series.
The first 10 episodes are phenomenal and there are multiple climactic moments of Woo Young Woo's journey.
The momentum carried them to the end of the finish line but you can get a sense it there was more stories to tell but no time to do it within budget and schedule.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: All Those Who Wander (2022)
Quite good and moved many characters forward
You can complain about the Alien(s) franchise vibe, you can complain of lost characters you grew fond of. You can complain it was predictable. I get it.
All I can say is I was THOROUGHLY entertained... and saw so many characters move forward, Uhura, La'an, Spock (in this timeframe), the Chapel love triangle, how frightening the Gorn are but now they have a weakness Starfleet will try to exploit and sometimes fail/succeed just like the Borg... which leads to more stories... and as Trekkies... isn't that what we ultimately want? More entertaining stories in this universe? I think so...
The Mandalorian: Chapter 16: The Rescue (2020)
No spoilers, just hang on for a good ride
Mostly expect the unexpected... with some very clear giveaways before the reveal. Enjoy.
