Hunters' Crossing (2017)
Scrappy but charming mockumentary that is full of enthusiasm
This is extreme low-budget, bunch-of-friends-goof-around-in-the-woods filmmaking, but there's enough infectious enthusiasm and solidly funny moments to make it an entertaining watch for anyone willing to take a punt on a lo-fi hunting mockumentary.
The characters are a bunch of idiots but the film feels affectionate towards them rather than mocking, and they all get a few moments to shine. At seventy-something minutes the film doesn't outstay its welcome, either. Well worth a look for fans of guerrilla (or gorilla) filmmaking, or dumb-but-funny humour (e.g. Trailer Park Boys).
Leon muss sterben (2017)
Incredibly charming zero-budget sci-fi romantic comedy
Aqua comes back from the future to kill Leon, who is on the brink of a great - but terrible - discovery. Unfortunately, Leon's pretty cute... and he has beer. What is a time-traveling revolutionary to do?
This film has plenty of rough edges - for a quoted budget of 100 Euros, what would you expect? But for film-fans who appreciate enthusiasm and charm over polish this has so much to recommend - a killer sense of humour, a surprisingly deep philosophical streak and some great riffs on The Terminator, Back to the Future, Planet of the Apes and Nosferatu.
Wonderful low-budget, punk rock filmmaking from a pair of filmmakers to watch. Apparently they've made another two films since this one, so I can't wait to see more...
