Tokyo Shaking (2021)

1% problems, smallest violin...
18 March 2022
The epitome of the "I am feel uncomfortable when we are not about me?" meme. Tokyo was not physically affected in the disaster, and faced no real radiation threat. And on top of that, we have the super privileged first world problems of the tip-top 1%: A wealthy European bank exec stationed in the wealthiest cities (which, again, sustained no damage) in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, who cares? The only way she could be any luckier if she were a man. She would be slightly less lucky if she worked for a Japanese company, but still pretty well off in her position. I really could care less how this type faired after the earthquake. There were even plenty of lower-level foreigners who did not have a viable economic opportunity to just quit their jobs and return to their home countries, let alone of course it's not like 100% of Japanese people could suddenly leave Japan.. it's not just a choice and matter of some bushido stereotypes orientalists are so obsessed with... a whole country can't be evacuated, duh. And again, why would Tokyo be when it was not affected? There were enough problems finding support for actual displaced people. Trust me, I know these exact types of foreign execs (yes, female too) stationed in Tokyo and at that time they said so many horrible things about actual victims of this disaster in the actual affect areas ("backwards" rural areas far away from Tokyo), I really don't care about their unfounded paranoia while others who were actually in the sh- literally lost everything, including lives.

Good but some confusing stuff
26 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was pretty good, but some stuff was confusing. One of the girls never had sex with any clients or even danced, and would get into fights with them even. The older woman who was a prostitute but also sort of acted like a "madam" still kept taking her on jobs and letting her live in the house. I guess if they are good friends she would let her stay, as long as she paid rent, but I don't think she did, and the woman even had children that she could have let stay there in her place. I don't know why she kept taking her on jobs at all. And then what was up with the other girl at the end? Did she have special needs? Even though I don't speak the language, I could tell she talked weird, but they seemed to indicate it was just a different accent/dialect since she was from the country, but then she seemed kinda slow... like repeating things and talking slowly and falling in love with their driver? Also she didn't realize drinking would hurt her pregnancy and neither did the others? Maybe she was just a country bumpkin stereotype.

has not aged well at all
6 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I can see why this was popular at the time, since there were almost no portrayals of trans people at that time, but it has not aged well, and in all honestly, it is not a good movie. it starts out with a bizarre, terribly mixed dub. It shows up a few more times, basically whenever there is a lot of movement. it seems the director didn't know how to record sound while there's movement. there's of course forrest whitacker's terrible accent, but on top of that, basically everyone has terrible acting. it is simply melodramatic. there is no character or relationship development. we don't understand how forrest and the main character become friends so quickly, really. Sure, there's some bonding moment, but the main character seems to fall into it too quickly. Forrest acts like a naive child. is he trying to manipulate him, or is it simply bad acting? it's hard to say, especially since everyone has similar performances throughout the film. the same with him and dil. suddenly they are in love and will do anything for each other, but why?? why won't he tell dil what's going on at all? also, if you know the twist, the whole movie is really obvious, and by today's standards, all of it is a big "so what?" I would say the only thing I really enjoyed, though it was still heavy handed, was how the metro is portrayed before and after he realises dil is trans. before, there are still plenty of hints that this is a gay bar, but they're fairly lowkey and subtle. like maybe yes, this is a gay bar, but it's pretty lowkey and chill. when he walks in right after he finds out, you say way more people of the same gender dancing together, and more people are wearing campy outfits, wigs, etc. more clearly gender nonconforming/non cis folks, some of them (and some cis guys) checking him out. the bar tender even is a bit more campy. i thought that was an amusing touch. but overall, if you are, like me, a millennial who were always curious about this movie you weren't allowed to watch as a kid, just heard whispers about... i'd just say skip it. it's mostly just annoying

Horrible Script & Acting
12 June 2018
What a terrible script.. it starts off so choppy with the most cliched dialogue and plot ever (and that continues throughout the whole movie), no lead into what should be a devastating action scene, and no emotion to back it up. Hilarious product placement. Cusack is the only actor in the film that we know can act, but he doesn't act in this. They don't even bother buttoning up his suit properly, and then it cuts back to him with it buttoned. I was really sad to see him in this; it's a real low-point. He must really be in debt or something to be willing to embarrass himself like this. I would not be in this, and I've made a lot less money in my life than him!

Don't waste your time, just watch the film (or read the book)
12 May 2018
They basically ruin all the mystery and atmosphere of the original works. Any good-looking shot is lifted directly from the film, and the rest looks terrible. They even included elements of the infamous deleted last chapter, which was removed from the original publication for good reason. All of the homoerotic and class-based undertones existed in the original work, they just tried to rev it up for the current era, but it makes it corny. Don't bother watching this.
