Against the Current (2009)
Head scratcher
I wanted to like this movie. It had all the elements of a small film I enjoy, simple storyline, moody atmosphere, music, but I found it to be so completely implausible I was dumbfounded as to how it got made or even thought of that it might make money or break even. The script was absolutely ridiculous, in my opinion. I was hoping the ending was going to surprise me somehow but not only did that not happen, it dug itself an even deeper hole of stupidity. This is all too bad for I like all the actors. A lot of reviewers here like it, and some really like it. They are definitely seeing something I could not grasp. I won't be seeing this movie ever again much less ever talking about it. The two stars by the way is for the effort. It is hard to get movies made and they did it. I just wish it had a better story.
Another Life (2019)
Now just hold on a minute
I strangely like this show. Well, I must, because I kept watching and am a sci fi nut who will invest my time in these shows hoping for a good outcome. Yes there are many head scratching moments and absurdities, however, I do find some of the performances very strong considering the scripts they are working with seem very naive at times.
It's not great but I must say it has it's moments both good and bad. Maybe these plot and script exits can be cleaned up if there is a second season for I feel/hope then that some of the performances wouldn't have been for nothing. William for example, who I think is an excellent character in the show.
Now having said all that I must point out it has one of the most silly and absurd cinematic scenes in my recent memory (spoiler here)in which the secretary of defense ( yes, that's right! Like that would happen in a million zillion years) decides to attempt to go into the space ship with a few other armed soldiers ,with only standard issue weapons and in their black covert uniforms with the black knit hats no less, and he says " i'm going in to get some answers?". What! WTF? that scene was so stupid I turned it off and only went back to the show after a couple of days, only to see if it would get worse. Whoever wrote that scene should be fired for sheer stupidity.
That's my take on this show. My thoughts on this show are like the show, incoherent and rambling.....with hopeful promise. I gave it an 8 because I like this space stuff, and even that doesn't make much sense.
Showgirls (1995)
This is a stupendously worthless movie
I had never seen this movie. I became interested in it because apparently, it is considered to be one of the worst movies in cinema. I researched it and read about it, thoroughly. I read quotes by the director, the actors, and many reviews.
So I finally watched it last night and must say with all honesty that there is nothing redeeming about it. It is simply a terrible head scratchingly bad movie. If you like it fine but let's not make it out to be anything more than it is. It should be accepted that is really is a bad movie and just move on. It didn't work. Whatever they were trying to achieve with the method they were using failed. That's fine. Roger Rabbit didn't work either and that was Steven Spielberg. If you can fine something redeeming for you then more power to you but for me, it was a complete waste of time. And lets be clear about one thing, if the women were not running around through most of the movie with bare breasts as opposed to wearing something, no one would watch this movie.
The Resident (2011)
Frightfully clichéd!
This was a ridiculous story involving a ridiculous building and a ridiculous amount of clichés. Having said that though, it was at times very visually enticing and creepily thrilling. Why Hilary Swank was involved with such a predictable formula (also being a producer) is a questions mark and Morgan does his usual Grey's anatomy character, but their chemistry seems forced and very unconvincing. Unfortunately, there is nothing here by way of a story that you haven't seen before-many times. In the end, your left feeling that with all that talent and visual production, why someone didn't bring up "Script Change!" and lessen it's predictability.
