Atlas Shrugged: Part III (2014)
Read the book
I've never reviewed a movie on IMDB but I felt strong enough to review this one. First I want to say that I've read the book Atlas Shrugged and really appreciated the concepts in it. I want to establish that I am not an Ayn Rand hater and that I really enjoyed the book.
I watched all three films and have to say they got worse as they went on. Part 1 was actually pretty good and I thought captured the feel of the book. Part 2 was serviceable, but not as good as part 1, although unlike a lot of reviewers I felt casting Samantha Mathis as Dagny wasn't a bad choice. Part 3 was not good at all Acting and writing were subpar compared to the first two films and the whole thing felt rushed. They skimmed over big parts of the book which I can understand as they had to fit the entire third part of the book (the book is split into three parts for those who haven't read it) into 1 1/2 hours. The worst part of the movie was the fact that they changed a lot of the plot from the book especially towards the end.
Atlas Shrugged was a difficult book to translate into a film especially if you are not working with a large budget. There were not going to be many financial backers of this project especially from "lefty" Hollywood, so they results were to be expected. Had they been able to keep the cast and the quality of writing from the first film consistent through all three, this would have ben a good trilogy and would have done justice to Rand's signature book.
Ground Hero (2003)
Very poor taste
I saw this 7 minute film on HuLu the other day and I have to say I am shocked that they would show something like this that is in such poor taste. The film opens with an audio broadcast which is obviously suppose to represent the 9/11 attacks on the WTC. It follows with a scene of men clearing debris when One man finds a hand. He ponders whether or not to tell a joke (why that would even come into a sane person's head is beyond me). From there it's just a play on this "joke" for the rest of the film. I normally have a pretty warped sense of humor, but I see no humor in something like the 9/11 attacks. This is probably one of the most callous things I've ever seen. There was nothing clever about this "film" and it wasn't even that well produced.
I can't wait to see this producer's next funny short, maybe something about the Holocaust or AIDS or maybe even a Lynching in the South.
Pathetic.
The Red Badge of Courage (1974)
A remake that outshines the original!
This was a great movie and it's the second time Richard Thomas starred in a remake that was better than the original. The other film was All Quiet on the Western Front and is available on DVD unlike this film which I have not been able to find anywhere.
