Land of Bad (2024)
A great action/survivial film made for the audience
Land of Bad is a refreshing action thriller in the vein of Tears of the Sun / Lone Survivor / 13 Hours.
A great cast. All bring their A-game. Great direction takes you in to the heart of the action and doesn't play it safe. The production value is fantastic and really takes you into how tactical warfare can be with with multiple teams in stretegic unison to complete the mission and bring everyone home safely.
As some of the other reviews confrim, there's nothing cheesy about Land of Bad - it respects the audience.
Ignore the silly reviews. You'll be gladly surprised. If you enjoy Seal Team / Special Forces action thrillers. Land of Bad is a 2hr ride you wont regreat. Enjoy!
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Remi Malek will rock you
Wow....
This was the most moving performance of a character I have ever seen in a long long time.
Remi Malek is literally perfect as the late great Freddie Mercury. Everything from his mannerisms to his voice. There is such a vulnerability to his performance, the emotion pours out of him in every scene, whether he has thousands in the palm of his hand on stage, or the loneliness and heartbreak in search of acceptance and companionship. Remy elicits the utmost emotion from every scene.
Freddie Mercury defied the critics when he wanted to be something other than a rock band. The greatest front man of all time, a national treasure. The same can now be said of Remy Malek. A Hugely talented actor with the world at his feet. Best Actor is a must for him. Fully deserved.
The Predator (2018)
Wished the end was a good as the start
The Predator starts off as a fun Sci-fi action movie, but then unfortunately gets lost along the way. Which is a shame because fans on the original 2 movies (huge fan here) got a taste of what could off been.
I'm sure Shane Black and Fred Dekker did their utmost to tell an entertaining story. But with re-shoots and a rumored 360 changes to the film's third act, perhaps The Predator was always facing an uphill battle.
The chemistry between the main group of heroes is great, there's some fun and laugh out loud moments which suit the 'fun' nature of the film, which is where this story goes rather than the darker aspect of the first 2 movies.
The downside of this is, after watching the film yesterday, I can't really remember any of the names! 3 characters stand out. McKenna, his son, and Traeger (played brilliantly by Sterling K Brown - deserved more screen time)
Other than their little quips and oddly placed one liners, There was no connection there. Where as in the original and it's sequel the characters were memorable, as they all had their part to play in the story and when they did meet their end, I rooted for the hero even more.
I generally think the final act suffered greatly from the re-shoots and script changes. It felt rushed, and went in a different direction than what had been setup in the beginning. A shame.
Good action. Black's one liners are there too. Sadly let down by the muddled third act. 7/10
John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)
What going to the movies is all about.
I hoping you've seen John Wick's 1st instalment. if not, go watch it now. Really, go watch it!
Sequels being better than their predecessor has been an age old debate. Very few live up to the task: The Wrath of Khan. Aliens. The Empire Strikes Back... You can 100% add John Wick: Chapter 2 to that exclusive list.
If John Wick was the starter, then Chapter 2 if most definitely the main course. Bigger and badder must of been the producer's goal.
The video game-esc action is beautifully ridiculous. The adrenaline pumping soundtrack does is job in enhancing the action further.
But, the most enjoying thing about John Wicks 2nd instalment is the story. The filmmakers have managed to open up the world of John Wick and given us enough to paint a very vivid picture of the underworld of a society where killers and assassins thrive. You'll be routing for John from the start to finish.
The 2 hours spent watching this film at my local movieplex were by far the finest time there in recent memory.
A must watch for action fans.
The Resurrection of Jake the Snake (2015)
The dark side of fame.... Your history does not have to be your destiny
Jake 'the snake' Roberts was something different, he didn't look like a bodybuilder, he didn't shout and scream at the camera. He was unique.
He wowed us all with his persona, a mix between Cape Fear's Max Cady and Taxi Driver's Travis Bickle.
I always new Jake struggled with substance abuse but never realised the extreme levels it got to that are shown in this film.
To see one of your childhood heroes reduced to an overweight addict, barely able to walk, clinging to life by the hope that one day he will hear the cheer of wrestling fans once more is truly heartbreaking.
Jake pulls no punches in explaining his demons and addictions, never once trying to blame anything or anybody but himself. This brutal honesty and the eloquent way he describes his daily battles with addiction are really compelling to watch - without directly saying so, Jake demands that you don't feel sorry for him - but you can't help it.
It takes an old friend, a man that looked up to, respected, and learnt from Jake - that man being Dallas Page (DDP) opening his life and home to help his mentor and friend.
We see the ups and downs that living with an addict can bring - betrayal, lies, soaring highs, incredible lows. DDP's unyielding support to his friend is very touching. DDP refuses to allow Jake to give up, a rare quality that more of us should employ.
The change that Jake goes through is remarkable from both a mental and physical standpoint. All the while receiving that one thing that Jake craves and lives for - acceptance and admiration from the fans, and more importantly, reconciling with his family.
I hope that this documentary finally gives Jake the launching pad, support system, whatever you want to call it, to start living life instead of surviving it.
Knock Knock (2015)
Fatal Attraction meets Misery
Kudos to Eli Roth for taking a chance on giving us a different type of movie. Did it pay off? well, watch the movie and see what you think.
I don't think a lot of the 'dreadful' reviews on Keanu Reeves' performance are fair. He doesn't really have that much to do.(when you watch it you will understand)
The first act bubbles nicely, then BAM! the craziness ensues. What I enjoyed most about Knock Knock is that it didn't play it safe - you never 100% knew what was going to happen next, which was very refreshing for these home invasion type movies.
The antagonists Genesis and Bel do their jobs as the sexy vixens that make Keanu's life hell - Lorenzo Izzo really shines in her maniacal Heath Ledger Joker-esc performance. A very good villain. This could be her break-out role.
You never really understand their motives for doing what they are doing or why they're targeting Evan (Keanu Reeves) and the ending leaves a lot to be desired, but it still makes for a fun watch, and a lesson to all dudes out there... if 2 hot chicks turn up at your door while your wife and kids are away - just send them on their merry way. :-)
Southpaw (2015)
every twist from the Rocky saga re-hashed for Southpaw.
First off, great Job Jake Gyllenhaal, without him I would have reviewed this move much lower. Great performance from his physical transformation to his bad boy comes good performance. kudos.
now... if you're reading this review I assume you have watched Rocky saga if not - go watch it now! (comparisons will be made below, beware!)
Southpaw borrows every plot points from those movies. It's not even subtle.
1. Hope is a fighter known for taking punishment = every Rocky movie
2. Looses the love of his life - his life falls apart = Rocky 3 plot
3. needs a trainer that he wouldn't normally use - Rocky 3 plot
4. becomes a better dad - Rocky 5 plot
I'm sure there are more to mention, but, you get the idea. Southpaw looked like Kurt Sutter read Sly Stallone's Rocky screenplays and decided to cram all of the above into his script for Southpaw.
15 minutes into this movie, you knew what the ending would be, and that's a real shame because Jake Gyllenhaal deserved better.
One of my biggest criticisms of Kurt Sutter's series' Sons of Anarchy and The Shield was the often shabby writing. Unfortunately, his first attempt at writing for the big screen is no different.
Sons of Anarchy: Papa's Goods (2014)
Did he take 'a cowards way out' ?
For a character that was so hooked on brotherhood and doing what's right for his club - I kinda felt let down by the ending, was an easy way out, some might say even cowardly.
The fact that Clay met 'Mr. Mayhem' previously as per a club vote and Jax didn't, or was he scared to meet his fate?
Either way I would of much preferred him to answer for his hostile actions. The 'Jackson Teller' character became really unlikeable over the past few seasons. I think the writers went to the 'club vs family' well too often; it became overkill.
He is often quoted saying 'this club, and you guys mean more to me than anything'. Surely if he felt that way he would abide by the rules for doing what he did.
Oh well...
Overall i'd put Sons and Kurt Sutter's other series, The Shield on a level par. When it was good it was good. But unfortunately for us viewers, it was mostly average, most of the time.
The Beaver (2011)
Better than American Beauty - Give this movie a chance !!
Please give this movie a chance.
The film tells a story of the boogieman of emotions - Depression, and how each member of a modern family is affected by it.
The acting is superb across the board. Mel Gibson is fantastic, as is the supporting cast especially Anton Yelchin and Jennifer Lawrence.
The story is not one of those 'powerful drama' types but has a subtle under tone that doesn't overpower the film, which I found refreshing. Too many films try to stuff the message down your throat so much that you cant pin your finger on the story line.
The Beaver is a heartwarming tale that will have you rooting for the whole family, and if you can go into the film with an open mind you will enjoy this great piece of cinema.
We all fall down in life and this movie shows us that we can get back up.
Hopefully the film and cast will get recognised come award season, and maybe even a nomination for Mel Gibson and Anton Yelchin.
