Insectula! (2015)
Fun, Horrific and a Masterpiece of B-Movie Zaniness
Ugly Men, Beautiful Women, Over-the-Top Acting, a Giant Bug, Scream Queens. Mix it all together and you have Insectula! - a Homage to B- Movie Madness from the Wilds of Minnesota, home of the Giant Mosquito. It lands in one of 10,000 Lakes, it finds early victims, the Moustache Man goes on the Hunt, he is intercepted by the Evil Scientist. There's a Pillow Fight (A pillow Fight?!?). Kudos to Mike Peterson pulling it all together in a film that plays wonderfully in your man-cave gatherings and should be a staple of midnight shows across the nation for years to come. It is what it is and it is a fun and bizarre film. And surely a sequel could hatch from the end!
The Unearthing (2015)
A Dynamite and Mysterious Gem
You don't find many independent films this tightly shot and written. And culling together a group of young actors and filming them in your hometown on a low budget, it's masterful. This film has professionalism in its framing, editing, storyline and even the acting. The film shows a student of the medium who is not afraid of telling a story simply and correctly. You don't need a lot of flashy camera moves or special effects. You just need a great script and a wonderful eye behind the camera. If you get an opportunity to stream this, or even purchase it from somewhere, do so. You won't be disappointed. I would watch the career of this director/writer very closely!
The Bequeather (2014)
Hilarious
The most colorful black and white movie I've seen in a long time. So funny I wet my pants! Henry Novotny is worth the price of admission or rental in itself! It's not often that an independent film is produced from the hinterlands of Minnesota, but you see the history of comic genius (Pat Proft and his Airplane! ilk) came from the roots of America. I hope that more people will be able to experience this laugh-out-loud epic of nonsense and humor. The Grahams are MY next door neighbors! Oh, and it has some good-looking women to offset the hideous male population of the film! Justen Overlander is a writing and acting and directing triple threat.
