BJ1: Film = funnier than the book. BJ2: Book = funnier than the film
14 November 2004
Couldn't quite put my finger on why exactly but the sequel wasn't as good as I'd anticipated. I did enjoy it and there were still some classic moments - the fight scene for example was still priceless, despite not occurring in the book. After seeing the original film for the first time, I left the cinema wanting to see it again straight away. Last night I left the cinema feeling vaguely entertained but in no rush to see the film again. Perhaps it was the change in Directors but this version seemed to have less heart and soul overall. Some of the rehashed jokes felt a little forced and the predictability of Bridget wandering into yet another situation where she unknowingly spilled out her most personal feelings to Darcy in front of a crowd of his work colleagues began to grate.

I appreciate that due to time constraints, it's difficult for films to replicate the books they are based on, but there seemed to be some really good missed opportunities in this one. Darcy's irritation with Bridget's abundance of self-help books for one or the unexpected discovery of where Uncle Geoffrey's preferences lie for another. The peripheral characters helped add to the magic of the first film. There was too little time spent on those characters in this one which was a great shame.

That said, the sequel is still worth seeing once at least. It is still entertaining and still provides some laughs. The Title scene with the parachute was a great opener. I'm also very glad that the characters in this sequel were played by the same actors as the original film (except for Mrs Darcy. Anyone else notice that Admiral Darcy appeared to have a new wife?!).

Worth a watch. Being a BJ fan, I'd give this sequel 7/10.

NCIS (2003– )
Time flies when you're enjoying yourself
23 September 2004
and each episode speeds along all too quickly! I LOVE this show…! What is there NOT to like? Rich story lines, strongly portrayed (and very human) personalities you can really warm to who play off each other brilliantly, all with their own distinctive quirks and – above all – the always wonderful Mark Harmon as main character! What more could you ask for in a show?! There's not a single character I'd change – none that irritate – they're all excellent. I consider it a bonus that it's the one thing on TV that all our family equally enjoy for different reasons. Even my father-in-law likes this and we normally have totally different viewing preferences! I was delighted when I heard that there was a second series imminent. Only problem is that living in England, who knows how long after it's shown in the US we'll get to see it! Fortunately it's worth the wait!

Nowhere Man (1995–1996)
Class Act

I was lucky enough to be able to get the whole series on VCD and am utterly hooked. More than halfway through the series and every episode has a different flavour. Like everyone else whose comments appear on this site, I really don't understand why it was cancelled - it's one of the best shows I've ever watched.

Mad Dog Time (1996)
Gabriel Byrne steals the show ...

... his version of "My Way" is hysterical (especially after I read somewhere that he truly thought - before he heard himself later - that it was Paul Anka that was out of tune and not himself!) and he gets all the best lines. That said, I thought Jeff Goldblum was also excellent - more understated than the rest of the characters which was a good foil for them.

The film is just simply great fun. It's not a classic, clever masterpiece of its time, but it is immensely enjoyable and well worth seeing at least once.

Entangled (1993)
Laughable

A film that you can't really get into. The story does not so much unfold as lurch drunkenly from pillar to post. You find yourself not caring about the characters or what happens in the end, although poor old Pierce does his best with a weak script.

This has almost reached the ranks of "so bad it's funny" - especially with the ever inappropriate music score. One particular scene, accompanied with horror-film-style music, had us laughing when I'm sure that was not the film's intention. I have never been so aware of the effect that a musical score can have on a film until we came across this one!

All in all, a completely forgettable 'mystery' not worth unentangling.

Truly, TRULY, AWFUL

I really wish I'd read all these comments before buying this film, but it was a spur of the moment choice. My husband and I enjoy Adam Sandler films so I thought (erroneously) that I couldn't go far wrong with this one, especially as it included Billy Zane and Billy Bob Thornton. I didn't pay much, but it was still too much. We cringed almost all the way through it, all the time thinking "this HAS to get better". It didn't and we'll never get that time back. Please, if you manage to read most of these user comments before buying, do not waste your money or your time on this poor excuse for a film.

Gripping
16 May 2003
Only halfway through the 4-part series so far but Cambridge Spies has definitely lived up to my expectations. Much impressed by the excellent Toby Stephens, having seen how versatile he can be from: Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Sunset Heights, Great Gatsby and of course Die Another Day! I have to say what a superb actor Tom Holland is too. Putting aside historical inaccuracies (this has never claimed to be a documentary anyway) in favour of sheer entertainment value, this is proving to be a fast-moving, truly gripping drama. I'm hooked!
