The Raven (2012)
Get the lead out? With a magnet?
John Cusack as Edgar A. Poe is heroic and pathetic at the same time. 'The Raven' put me in mind of the recent Sherlock Holmes movies and that is a good thing. Maniac is killing people according to Poe's stories and a Baltimore Homocide Detective recognizes the inspiration and drags Poe into the investigation against his will. When Poe's main squeeze gets kidnapped, he jumps in with both feet, packing heat and everything. Was really hoping for a knock down drag out fight at the end but oh well, you can't have everything. One quibble though, did doctors really think you could locate a lead bullet with a magnet? That bugged me from the moment it happened. It's not possible since lead is a non-ferrous metal. Other than that, good, interesting flick with a moderate amount of gore and more humor than I was expecting, which was a pleasant surprise.
Hellacious Acres: The Case of John Glass (2011)
godawful movie
Guy wakes up in the future wearing a rubber suit and walks from one dilapidated barn to another trying to figure out stuff. It stinks. Movie was shot all grainy and washed out. Gives new meaning to the term, "low budget". Jesus, what an awful movie. Heavy metal soundtrack drowns out dialogue. I got suckered in and bought this on a whim. Please don't make the same mistake that I made. At one point, he digs a hole and puts his head in it. Can't say I blame him. It was just bad, okay? A Canadian production. Thank god you can't blame this on some American film maker. The sale of the one DVD I bought probably put the film in the black, that's how low the production values were. Ugh. Don't EVER watch this.
