Really? The all powerful girl's first name is "America"?
30 June 2022
Yeah... no. That took all the buzz out of it and made me cringe too hard to give anyhting above 1*, despite it being an okayish movie.

Whether it was meant as a joke, a statement or anything inbetween or nothing at all: No, stop.

Killing Eve (2018–2022)

Good story, cringey execution.
24 November 2018
This is a good series with some great acting. But gosh, why is there all this PEGI 13 romance cringe, the unfunny and stupid conversations about penises and "old people sex" jokes?

Those moments are literally in every single episode and feel like watching whatever horrible "Shades of Grey" movie, it really took a lot away from the whole series.

It made me roll my eyes far too often and took me out of the thrill many times, therefore 6/10.

Wonder Woman (2017)
2/10
Over-hyped, far too long and for the majority of its run time plain boring.
18 July 2017
All those ratings have got to be fake. I can and will not believe that most people ACTUALLY thought this movie was good.

It took literally until one hour and 14 minutes, half way through the whole film, to FINALLY get some action sequences that are longer than 5 seconds! Everything beforehand is boring preparation garbage and stupid dialogues by uninteresting, cliché characters nobody cares about mixed with some dad-jokes even immature teenagers would heartily yawn at.

The end was also really, really cheesy, completely "ex machina" and bad... seriously, who wrote this crap?

Compared to other action hero flicks this falls super flat on all fronts: Uninspired story and antagonists, far too little action, too much blabbering and cringey PEGI-13 fillers and jokes.

2/10, this movie is utter trash so don't waste your time.

Your Name. (2016)
9/10
An exceptionally beautiful, truly unique movie.
3 July 2017
It's difficult to talk about this anime's content without any spoilers so to keep it short:

Just watch it. If you are in the mood for a mysterious, philosophical story with some comedy and romance elements that evolves around a very interesting, intelligent and just astonishing story then trust all the other positive voices, read as little about the plot as you can and just give it a go.

The only non-spoilery disclaimer I want to give is that the first ten minutes are really "weird" and confusing but make perfect sense very quickly so don't get turned off by that.

9/10, heart-warming and really unique. Kimi no na wa is surely one of the best animation films in its genre of the last few years.

A good series if you are into these kind of shows.
11 January 2017
I'll keep it short: If you are a fan of the True Crime genre you will probably like this series. It follows "the usual patterns" and executes the documentation and narrative quite well. It is nothing "special" but definitely one of the better shows of this kind I have seen in a while.

Unfortunately a few of the cases have already been documented/discussed in a lot of detail on other shows, but there are quite a few which I have never heard of before.

If you are done watching "The Jinx", "Making a Murderer" and I guess "The Killing Season" and liked those shows you will find some entertainment in this one, too.

Overall i would recommend it, 7/10.

Far below expectations.
17 December 2016
I was very disappointed with this movie. The trailer looked great and I am a fan of the action/western genre in general but this... the second half of the movie was just endless, brainless shooting to a point where it just tried to obviously fill up screen time the film would not have needed at all.

The background story sounded interesting at first but was not thought through enough to actually make you feel anything for the characters that gather as the "Magnificent Seven". The protagonists are shallow as can be, just seven people with boring, stereotypical background stories that shoot and fight soooooo much better than the bad guys.

How original!

If you are in the mood for a superficial shootout and just want to see a lot of smoking guns and blood then yes, this can be entertaining. But if you expect a good story, interesting characters or basically anything surprising or new then no, I would not recommend watching this. There are far, far better westerns out there.

5/10, not awful but don't bring your hopes up too much.

The Exorcist (2016–2018)
7/10
You need to stick through the rough, slow start but will be rewarded with a great show if you do.
5 November 2016
I really like "The Exorcist" by now but have to be honest: The first episode was great, the following two episodes were VERY mediocre if not even boring and felt very, very lengthy. I thought about quitting it after episode three and am glad I didn't in retrospect.

Now that more episodes are out the story has finally become much more suspenseful and I started actually caring about the characters, the horror/mystery elements have gained much more momentum and it is exciting to see the progression of the possession and how they try to deal with it.

Overall I rate the series 7/10, if it wasn't for that very rough patch in the beginning I would give it a solid 8/10 and recommend watching it for fans of the genre.

A good adaptation of a fantastic musical, the rating does not do it justice.
3 October 2016
I enjoyed the movie a lot, it has been many years since i saw "Into the Woods" as a live musical and the film was a nice reminder of why i loved the story so much back then and still do.

In short: It's DEFINITELY not for everyone and i think that is reflected in the very harsh, partially unjust ratings and comments. The adaptation is very close to the original and executed beautifully though and fans will have a good time watching it.

If you enjoyed the original musical or "dramatic comedy musicals" in general then i recommend watching it.

If you expect some Tim Burton-esque "Alice through the Looking Glass" film you will be disappointed because that is NOT what this is despite what the trailer might suggest.

8/10 but i understand that it is only enjoyable for a very specific audience (and definitely not for kids or most teens!).

Darker Than Black (2007–2010)

It had potential, but...
15 November 2014
The anime's story is interesting and unique, the animation is great as well.

Unfortunately the protagonists remain somewhat flat and uninspiring, the beginning of the show feels very "rushed" and confusing. The audience is just tossed into this world without pretty much any explanation until later episodes about what "Hell's Gate" actually is or even looks like which was kinda annoying to be honest.

Instead of providing the really interesting elements or focusing more on the supernatural powers and happenings the creators decided to add quite a few boring filler episodes with a totally irrelevant side story and boring characters towards the later midsection of the show as well. Those felt totally unnecessary and almost made me stop watching the show since it felt like such a waste of time at that point.

Overall I didn't hate the show and watched it all the way through but quite frankly: I would probably not recommend it to anyone over other great shows that are in the same genre but just more superior in the way of story telling and action.

This movie sucked. A lot.

Warning: Spoilers
Gosh, this film was SO stupid...

I know this is a fantasy world with fantasy rules but seriously, how many goddamn bullets to the head, ripped out eyes or other deadly flesh wounds does it take for ANYONE to die in Sin City? It became ridiculous at some point how apparently everyone is a Wolverine in disguise. It made all the action and shootout scenes laughable and lame to watch.

Not even the sometimes really impressive CGI or Eva Green could rescue this hot mess with its nonsense voice overs and predictable story line. The action scenes were lame, the characters were boring and it did in no way get even close to the cool, fresh vibe the first Sin City delivered a couple of years ago.

2/10, one of the most disappointing movies in a long time.

Hard Candy (2005)
7/10
An interesting story with a lot of suspense that somehow gets lost towards the second half of the movie.
7 July 2014
I quite enjoyed this film, Ellen Page's acting as the sweet yet obviously highly disturbed girl who is "on the hunt" was brilliant and that alone makes this movie worth watching.

The plot was intriguing and offered a lot of suspense, it's a pity that it did not show more of the back story/real motives that drive the female protagonist though. The character Hayley remains a mystery which did not come across as "interesting", it rather felt as if the movie was lacking a certain depth and this is the main reason why I would not rate it more than "good" overall.

The violence takes an in my opinion unnecessarily big part of the play time and makes the film come across as a bit too shallow towards the end. It also seemed highly unrealistic how after all that was done to him the victim still seems to be "actually pretty fine" physically, this was weird to watch at some points.

In conclusion the movie is worth the watch but missed the chance to be amazing by including more in-depth psychological portrayal of its main characters instead of the excessive violence scenes.

7/10, i was tending towards 6/10 but it barely made the cut.

Bates Motel (2013–2017)
7/10
A great, gripping story and a literally perfect cast of talented, ambitious actors.
31 January 2014
This is a fantastic series! It is very suspenseful and getting more and more intense with no "filler episodes" whatsoever.

The actors are PERFECT in every single role and you can see that anyyone involved with this story is really trying their hardest to give a great entertainment experience to the audience, and yes, they succeed all the way through.

I also like the balance between "mere psychological suspense" and brutal, obvious gore that is struck perfectly to not get boring/repetitive one way or the other like in some other series i have been watching lately.

9/10, i would recommend this series wholeheartedly to anyone.

The Village (2004)

This is actually a Shyamalan movie and doesn't deserve 1/10 stars? What a surprise!
24 January 2014
I saw this on TV a couple weeks ago and since my expectations towards it were really, really slim due to it being a Shyamalan flick (let's be real: the last 5 movies of this guy were unbelievably terrible from start to end), I was actually kinda surprised that I didn't have to fight the urge to hammer the "off" remote button after a few minutes.

Don't get me wrong, it's not an "amazing" story that will stick with you/leave a lasting impression just as some of the early works of this director/writer did, it's an okay horror movie with an interesting setting and trying actors.

The movie unfortunately gets kinda "meh" towards the ending, but one might surely watch it anyways if you are a fan of the horror genre.

Hemlock Grove (2013–2015)

A great cast, a "typical", yet interesting horror story and a lot of potential for future seasons.
19 January 2014
This series isn't as "overwhelmingly awesome" right from the start as others might be, I think the first about 3 to 4 episodes were somehow too long of an "intro" with just a few horror highlights before the character/story development finally really took off.

Everything was very confusing in the beginning which is of course not a "bad thing" per se, but I was very afraid about the "stereotypical" highschool-paranormal-Twilight-theme that seemed to be starting early on.

As it turned out, the story luckily didn't become just yet another Twilight-ish flick even though the first few hours suggested it, and turned out to be a mysterious, interesting and brutal tale.

Overall: you got to stick through the rather "flat" start and will be rewarded with an interesting and VERY well casted horror story that excellently captures the spot between storytelling and pure gore/horror, always keeping you wondering what will happen next.

7/10, leaning more towards 8/10 rather than below. I would recommend the series to fans of the genre.

Dark Shadows (2012)
2/10
A bad movie with a big budget to cover up its flaws.
16 December 2013
If it wasn't for the obviously enormous budget that went into hiring stars and starlets as well as the CGI efforts and special effects (which by the way look idiotic at some points), this movie would be categorized as a B-Movie at best.

The story is flat and uninspiring (bad witch curses everyone, yaaaawn!) and flat out predictable. The end doesn't make any sense at all and seems completely rushed.

Seeing Johnny Depp as yet again another make-up-overloaded "weirdo character" gets boring by now as well and all of the other actors except for Eva Green seem to not give it their best at all. The acting is laughably corny in a lot of the scenes.

This movie tries sooooooo hard to be funny it is painful at times and rarely successful. The obvious product placements throughout the story are annoying as well.

3/10, unwatchable disappointment and a waste of time.

Hell Girl (2005–2006)
6/10
The beginning is very repetitive, but it becomes enjoyable towards the second half.
7 August 2013
Overall I enjoyed Hell Girl but the first about 10 episodes are really, really repetitive and... yes... become even kinda boring at some point.

After that rough start the series turns out to be more and more enjoyable though, the animation is beautiful and the grand themes of this Anime were quite interesting:

How far are you willing to go for vengeance? Is vengeance ever the right answer? Do some people rightfully deserve to go to hell for what they have done?

6/10, solid but not a must see in my opinion. I would recommend it half-heartedly to people really interested in the story but as I said don't expect to be blown away right from the beginning.

Shiki (2010–2011)

It's better than one might think
19 July 2013
When I saw the rather high ratings on this anime here on IMDb and some anime related forums I decided to give this series a try even though the story line sounds admittedly rather shallow and uninspiring.

Now that I have finished watching the series I was surprised to experience that the plot and characters are indeed a lot deeper and more interesting than I would have expected them to be. It's hard to talk about the series without spoiling a lot so all I will say is: "Shiki" is a well written, creepy and exciting story without any unnecessary fan service or romance (which I really appreciate nowadays...) and worth the watch if you aren't just looking for a "quick anime fix" but want to be told a gripping tale about which actions are or aren't morally acceptable when threatened by impending death and misery.

8/10
