I really enjoyed this...until the swimming astronaut controversy
24 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was a great show for me, very atmospheric, with great music by Max Richter (whom I really admire), until I saw an astronaut "swimming through space". Yes, propelling through the void of space, by making "swimming" moves. It completely devastated any atmosphere of mystery the series was building. So, it is a great show, up until you reach the swimming astronaut. The whole scene felt like at that moment some invisible curtain opened and the clowns flooded the theater. It was like watching something entirely different, to the point of making sure I'm on the right channel.

After a brief search, I see that some people are interpreting this as a dream sequence. That makes sense, the fact that Hinata is swimming is meant to be a clue that this is a dream, in which case negative criticism is not warranted. But there aren't any other indications that this was indeed a dream sequence. I really hope this wasn't Apple's swimming astronaut circus.

I still left my rating at 8, because up to that specific scene the show was amazing, gripping, highly enjoyable.

Not worth your time.
23 February 2022
I'm not good at writing good, in-depth reviews, so I'll just try to convey a couple of thoughts. Even if the first episode picks your interest (as it happened with me), the show doesn't hold up to its promise. Eventually it feels very cheap, despite some good efforts by the cast. There are scenes (like the final confrontation) so badly made that can make you laugh.

Better to re-watch Fargo or some other great show, than spent time here.

Star Trek: Picard (2020–2023)

Thank you, Sir Patrick
29 January 2020
Thank you, Sir Patrick Stewart, for saving the Star Trek franchise from itself, and for doing such a fine job at it.

I think we finally have a Star Trek series again, and a very good one. I was very disappointed and pessimistic about Star Trek's future after abandoning 'Discovery'.

While It is not optimistic that we had to turn to the most important figure in the development and cultivation of the star trek legend (which is Sir Patrick's Captain Picard), the return to star trek values as are evident in the scientific, moral and political questions raised in the plot is paramount and more timely than ever.

I don't want to give away any spoilers. If you consider yourself a star trek fan, do yourself a favor and take the time to watch the first episode. It's brilliant.

The Witcher (2019– )
5/10
A good show, but please stop comparing it to Game of Thrones.
2 January 2020
It's definitely above average, better than most fantasy themed shows of the past few years, but people should stop comparing it to "Game of thrones" (GoT). The plot, the writing, the depth of characters, the overall sense of realism of the world where it is set, put GoT to a completely different league.

In terms of story, I guess that people expect different things from the two. GoT emphasizes more on the moral and political questions that arise from the circumstances and the plot, and in that manages to go beyond most works of fantasy, making it more relevant to the viewer's reality. The witcher exploits, at least so far (I admit not having read the novels), more "standard" themes of fantasy literature, and adopts a more simplistic worldview.

I won't go into details, many things have been said about the two. For example some reviewers praised the choreography of the fight scenes in the Witcher, saying that GoT could have benefited from a similarly good choreography. To that one would answer that the gritty realism of the early seasons GoT fight scenes is what the witcher really misses.

Don't expect anything near GoT production value. Some people mention that the Witcher was actually more expensive to make. That alone is never the measure of a good show, nor can it ensure production value, nevertheless it's certainly worth watching (and we can probably say that it is worth its cost).

The Last Kingdom (2015–2023)
9/10
A mixed experience, but worth watching in the end.
7 September 2019
First of all, let me note that I find the soundtrack horrible. It's one of the worst I've ever heard. Especially the distorted screaming that can be heard at the opening credits, it's almost cartoonish. The direction is slightly better, but nothing unforgettable. It's funny when the director indulges in period-drama cliche shots only to execute them with sub-par quality. Quite often while watching the show you get the impression that takes could have been done better, or that things must have been "hurried". The acting is sometimes decent, I liked old lord Oda a lot, Father Beocca, Iseult too, but most characters are just bearable. Same goes for Uthred, the feeling of dislike doesn't go away after the initial encounter, but persists at least all the way to season 2 (so far I've only watched s01).

I won't go into the historical accuracy in the depiction of medieval England, others have done so quite thoroughly and revealed some inaccuracies (just google "the history pendants' guide to the last kingdom", for example, but beware of spoilers).

Overall, it takes a lot of effort to watch, with minimal reward.

Edit: Did I mention that I hate the soundtrack? In season 2 it remains the greatest distraction in the show, the constant reminder that inhibits immersion.

Edit2: The acting, direction and the show as a whole improves as we enter the second season (plus the main characters indeed have a tendency to "grow" on you). I have thus decided to increase the rating from a 5 (season 1 standards) to a 7.

Edit 3: Seasons 2 and 3 make for a far better experience than season 1. I've given the series an 8, and really hope to see a 4th season. Everything seems drastically improved by the time we reach the 3d season. Overall, I think it is worth it, even if it takes the whole 1st season to reach a point where you begin to appreciate the show.

Rare realism.
1 August 2019
I would just like to note that submarine operation has rarely been so realistically depicted. The attention to detail has been overwhelming enough to overshadow the few and minor inconsistencies. Bravo for a very nice approach to the genre, and the "breaking" of many cliches (I was pleasantly surprised when the depth charges exploded).

Unfortunately, as the movie progresses, the errors and resulting plot holes are way too many and definitely "shift" the aforementioned balance. In the end, the plot is based on extremely unrealistic premises and factual mistakes.

Still it's a nice film, especially if you are interested in submarines.

Star Trek: Discovery: Such Sweet Sorrow (2019)
Season 2, Episode 13

Probably the worst
17 April 2019
This one is one of the worst episodes of the whole series (which says a lot, given that the whole series is less than mediocre). The plot is completely redundant, you can skip through most of it without actually missing anything. I wonder what was the point in making it; then again, one may justifiably wonder the same for most episodes. One question remains: Why? Why do this to star trek? Why test the limits of its fan base? Eventually the desire to follow the franchise will wither, given the unimaginative, uninspired writing that plagues it, and it will become much easier to avoid it as an example of a great idea gone wrong in the making.

Doesn't even understand the prime directive
24 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
It's weird, but the author of this story doesn't seem to understand the meaning of the prime directive. Explaining and then giving away technological artifacts? lol

The Expanse (2015–2022)

Really good.
25 April 2018
It's perhaps the first time that I encounter an action scifi series that doesn't blatantly insult our intelligence. I haven't finished the first season yet, but I find it refreshing. There is great attention to realism, a rudimentary respect of the physical laws, and a story with great attention to detail and economy. Everything is straight to the point, helping the build up of the tension. I don't think I'm a good reviewer, as my review is definitely short and doesn't cover many aspects of the series, but I know I'm a harsh one when it comes to certain things, like the rudimentary plausibility of certain dramatic elements used in the narative, including the "workings" of the fictional world it is set in. I don't mind the unrealistic or purely fictional elements, as long as there is some form of consistency.

Star Trek: Discovery (2017–2024)

Getting worse
10 January 2018
The series gave me a very bad impression when it started. Unfortunately it doesn't get better. Star Trek was always about the expression of a vision. How could this be someone's vision? Besides the fact that one should expect, as time goes by and scientific knowledge is better proliferated, a more meticulous approach to the scientific aspect, the series fails to appeal to anything good in us, very much unlike most of its predecessors that exemplified the best of humanity's ideals. There is some attempt to do so, by "touching" certain ethical considerations, but they are so limited and almost indifferently portrayed that they fail to shift the focus.

The writing is unimaginative, I think that perhaps the series suffers most from weak writing, weak ideas and their even worse application. It's a shame to have a legacy filled with scifi gems (in almost all its predecessors, at least the ones I've seen include TOS, TNG, Enterprise and Voyager) shifting its focus away from perhaps its strongest point. The acting isn't that bad, especially for some lead characters (Sonequa Martin-Green, Jason Isaacs and Doug Jones immediately come to mind). It would have been really great to see how they'd have fared in better hands.

Star Trek: Discovery (2017–2024)

Disappointing.
27 October 2017
I was planning to write a long and detailed review, but after logging in here I saw that many other reviewers have covered me fully.

I'll just say that this is not even mediocre science fiction, and the star trek series was always about making decent (if not excellent) science fiction in a way that is appealing to a wider audience. TOS and TNG specifically excelled in that, many scenarios were simply amazing, giving dramatic action through insightful puzzles. The dynamics of the casts were also amazing, becoming a major incentive for the series even from the first episodes.

There is minimal respect here for science or science fiction, the basic tenets of what star trek really is. We've come to expect certain things from a series carrying the name "star trek", none of which is delivered.

The Last Ship (2014–2018)

Indecent.
30 August 2015
This is no longer about realism. The show has crossed a certain line, in insulting our intelligence, that the only word that comes to mind is "indecent". There is no respect for the viewer. One comes expecting to see a series about a navy destroyer surviving and fighting a global pandemic, and instead he gets a bunch of superheroes altering the laws of nature and rewriting physics at will. Spoiler: They use special fabrics extracted from an old US flag to create the vaccine. OK, it's not a real spoiler, something like that would be too realistic for the show's standards.

It would be very difficult to enumerate all the inaccuracies, it is implausible to the point of unwatchability.

Defiance (2013–2015)
3/10
Unimaginative. Full of clichés. Eventually ridiculous, to the point of not being watchable.
7 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Well, I like science fiction a lot, but unfortunately it's a genre we don't see a lot now days (there is the bright exception of Doctor Who, which only serves to prove the rule it seems). This show, for example, shouldn't be called science fiction. It lacks in both the science and the fiction parts. Perhaps it could be categorized as "action", "adventure" or something like that, where it would fail in place.

I was very eager to watch it, to the point of being willing to forgive all the pilot's shortcomings, until the battle with the alien invaders (at the end of the pilot) begun. I mean, who writes these things? There wasn't anything even remotely plausible in the scenario. A group of highly advanced and sophisticated aliens arrive in a spaceship, to invade the town of "Defiance". It turns out that they are lumbering idiots clad in metal and growling like beasts, firing some slow cannons with firepower and accuracy that would embarrass first world war troops. Reconnaissance, information as a whole probably, are concepts alien to them. They were probably given the spaceships from the gods, as some form of cruel mockery towards existence (viewers included). It was so awful it made me forget of all the good and bad points I wanted to write about, as I was watching the episode. Isn't it an embarrassing disappointment for those who wrote this script? The important part in creating an action film (leaving out the "science fiction" part) or series, is not in the special effects, but in the making of an -even remotely so- plausible story, otherwise any chance to bond, to identify with the heroes, is lost. The battle scene reminded me of '90s cartoons I'd avoid on TV.

Leaving out this embarrassing finale, which made me subtract five points from the vote, moving the result from the starting point of 6 to 1, I give it a 3 because of the cool opening sequence (with the memories of the initial invasion) and some decently made and played characters. Nothing original there, but certainly professionally drafted and acted. The episode starts well, and keeps you going, with diminishing interest, until the aliens and the bike raiders arrive.

Generally speaking, science fiction is all about ideas, about "what if" scenarios, where ideas are juxtaposed, the consistency of possible futures is evaluated, and concepts are clarified and visualized in their extremes, as we are not restrained by any conventional boundary in the creation of our imaginary world, except perhaps its self-consistency. In film and TV some of these elements have to survive, in order to be able to place the work in the scifi genre, even if diminished in their plot importance. You won't find any of them in here.

Maybe I'm biased because of the disappointment I went through in the finale of the pilot...If anyone would like to point out to me some good aspects I missed, please do so.
