Grave Encounters (2011)
An old concept revisited
Found footage films are nothing new and with this movie's low budget and the onslaught of similar films at the time it is easy to see why this probably went un-noticed. Though it is a good film which utilizes what it has to create an effective atmosphere. Despite this though, do not expect to be scared. The visual effects are used sparsely and do not offer anything new while the movie itself takes quite a bit of time to build up.
If you are a patient individual, this movie is quite interesting and worth your time. But if you have seen movies like this many times before hand then there is not much new here to see.
Saw 3D (2010)
Simply fan service
I'm a big Saw fan but like many have been saying this felt rushed and needed more. Lets break it down:
The Good: Costas Mandylor puts on another excellent performance and pretty much out shines everyone. Also his little killing spree at the end made the movie worth it.
I liked the first trap and found the back-and-forth banter to be amusing.
The car trap was awesome.
Yay Cary Elwes
The Bad: Both Jigsaw and Doctor Gordon only get limited screen time, considering how important Gordon is I felt he need much more to do in the film.
Extend the ending, it's essentially "lol Gordon is an apprentice" *credits*
The Ugly: I'm personally bothered by the fact that most everyone fails at Jigsaw's games, the message behind them has been lost and it has just become a dulled down gore fest.
The story with Bobby is pointless and does nothing for the story, the traps are boring and uninspired, and the tooth thing at the end.....come on.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
Favourite musical in a long time
Catchy songs and incredibly dark humour kept we watching all the way through. Too bad Pirelli (Sacha Baron Cohen)is killed though because he was definitely my favourite character aside of Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman)who put on a great performance. Though the movie built up to an abrupt ending where I expected at least a bit more. After Sweeney dies the movie just ends with no aftermath, I understand everyone is dead but it just felt like there could have been something more.
The movie had an interesting look at society and the metaphor of "Man eating man" was put so literally and so brilliantly. The fact that there was no clear protagonist in the movie, to me, made the characters more endearing because there was no real bias set up.
Spliced (2009)
Bizarrely entertaining
I was pleasantly surprised by this cartoon when I flipped by it a few months ago on Teletoon, it actually makes up for the fact that they stopped showing Flapjack. The story lines seem to go nowhere and rely on sight gags and comedic timing to keep the audience's attention. The two main characters Entree and Peri have a striking resemblance to Ren and Stimpy along with similar (though less adult) humour. It is fast paced and random and exactly what a kid show should be. Entree also has a lot of similarities to Spanky Ham from Drawn Together (I actually thought it was the same voice actor)which makes him even more entertaining to watch.
I like its on-the-fly humour and hope the show continues.
