Leila (2019)
A shoddy Indianised knock-off of 'The Handmaid's Tale'
It's a shoddy Indianised knock-off of 'The Handmaid's Tale'. The intent is to draw attention towards the certain aspects of majoritarian right-wing national politics prevailing in India but fails miserably to get it's message across. I was apprehensive about the series after having forced myself into reading the novel, which was unimpressive in the first place (couldn't read it in one sitting, had abandoned & picked up again with reluctance just so that I could finish before the series). Everything is such a desperate attempt to emulate 'The Handmaid's Tale', a modern masterpiece. This is made just to befool audiences with the so-called original content on Netflix who haven't read Margaret Atwood's book or seen Hulu's adaptation, especially the India audience who do not have access to Hulu. I have nothing against art-imitating/inspiring-art or Indianising a foreign concept but this is an appalling attempt. Setting the plotline aside, the cinematography, directing & acting departments have done a good job. (Hence, three stars in my review)
