Masters of the Air: Part One (2024)
Bad writing but good characters.
My wife and i have watched Band of Brother multiple times and was suggested watching this series because of that. So with great expectations we fired this episode up and was immediately confused by the weird pacing and weird introduction to characters. After 15 minutes we almost wanted to turn it off - and halfway through i gave up and did something else that evening.
This first episode is a big pile of mess in terms of sorry telling, you are tossed directly into the story without proper introduction of characters, almost as if you wandered into a movie halfway.
The choice of actors are good, they all act really good and look like they belong in that era. Its just sad that they are wasted on this pile of mess.
The visuals are below the standards you expect in 2024 , with subpar CGI. Which is quite obvious most of the time.
I dont think we'll watch anymore episodes.
Arctic (2018)
Thin spread...
Not enough dialogue... And when its finally there its just really unsatisfying.
Mads is just wandering around in snow, mumbling in either Danish or English, not sure why he speaks English when alone, when he clearly is Danish ???
He also makes irrational decisions, like burning all gas for no reason or bring seawater on his journey ??
I wish that two people had survived in the second crash, and that 3 people had communicated somewhat similar to 'enemy' .. then one could get eaten by a bear and the two survivors had walked to their rescue.
Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)
Misunderstood
I've read a couple of reviews and see the same trend amongst many of them. People seem to forget that this is a Sci-Fi movie, and a sequel to the goofy 'Indepenance Day'.
This movie is all about what it actually would feel like being attacked by a supreme alien race whoose goal is to suck out the iron core of our planet - using a poor technique, but powerful nonetheless.
Many other reviewers lack character development, yeah, but the movie only spans over 1-2 days real-time, there's not that much development that could happen in such a short while - and in some cases there in fact IS some development. Not much, but enough.
Capturing how billions of people react to annihilation while having spent 20 years building defences, i actually think this movie does a great job. The movie also captures some aspects of how a new space age would evolve with tow-truckers in space, moon bases and what not.
Is the movie too short, yes, half of the movie is introduction to concepts and explanations to the viewer what we are looking at and it gets a little tiresome. But i guess its necessary to bring a long people who haven't seen ID4 at least 3-4 times like those of us who are fans of the first movie.
The physics and graphics are truly awesome throughout the movie, with only a few exceptions of 'fake' looking cgi. But mostly its believable. I really liked that the queen ship dragged everything with it because of gravitational pull, it made perfect sense - but somehow that gravity stopped when it hit earth. Like someone else said, and object of that size would have annihilated earth, just by its presence ... but then the movie would have stopped.
The Queen battle also made sense - She was obviously too eager and too confident of her powers to realise what kind of battle she went into. The reason why she went for the ball herself, was obviously because its a bit too delicate to let her grunts handle.
All in all i liked this movie as a presentation of a massive alien invasion with future tech.
47 Ronin (2013)
A little disappointed
Whats good: - Scenery, pictures and Japanese Samurai culture - 'Video Quality' : All CGI looks awesome and 'real' - The Lore : I loved all the pieces of the puzzle, individually.
Whats bad: - The movie poster has a heavily tattooed man, whom we only see for 3 seconds.. so why was he on the poster ?
- Keanu Reeves plays as an underdog, IN THE WHOLE MOVIE. somehow it feels as though Hiroyuki Sanada (Oishi) is the main character, but i guess the lead is shared. So when Keanu proves his worth, he's still an underdog, no hero build up.. just a sad story.
- The two main villains (snake lady and teenage ninja samurai), makes this weird ritual where she gets his heart, but turns it into a spider. She says that they are bound together forever - but you never see any warm feelings between the two ? .. why ?
- Keanu gets magic swords from his old friends, but he is the only one who can use it - to cut a tree - but then never uses that power again ( unless you count the fire-split a cut)
- 1 year passes bye where NOTHING happens, no story, no details about Kai, no suffering of Oishi, no evil plotting of the villains, no stories about the other ronin.. just woosh !
- the Gang Bang Seppuku in the end just makes me sad. If only someone has told the Shogun about the dragons, demons, witchcraft and whatnot he might had changed his mind, no ?.. seems pointless that 47 people commit suicide because they defended their kingdom against freaking demons !
all in all: The movies has stunning visuals, but skips through the story and the details so fast that lots are lost. And some stuff doesn't make sense when you think of it.
Brave (2012)
Spoiled the opportunity of a great story
This movie was OK and entertaining and exciting up until she meets the witch, from there its a free fall in all respects.
the mother as a bear was terrible and horrible to watch, felt awkward throughout - made the impression that Pixar/Disney just wanted to make a BrotherBear movie on their own.
This is what SHOULD have happened:
Merida flees the castle and finds out about the true story behind the big bad bear in the forest - she meets him and fights with him, but also finds out how to unlock his 'fate' - they become lovers and they ride back to the castle were the king and queen are happy to see them.
that would have made a MUCH better story and made better use of the 'magic' ...
Killing the unlucky bear/prince was just horrible and slightly cruel - why did he have to die ? The mother wasn't evil, that's what we learned throughout second half of the movie...
such a spoiled opportunity of a great movie :-(
Despicable Me (2010)
Incredible simple story 3D feature film
Having watched a lot of Pixar and Dreamworks animated movies, and having watched movies with the main voice (Steve Carell). I expected something on par with those - only to be disappointed together with my girlfriend who suffered throughout the movie with me.
Lots of scenes are pure 100% 3D-showoff, which is very lame when seeing it without glasses, some of these 3D scenes are long and very uninteresting with no dialog. The story even makes pauses for these scenes to finish !
The voice of the main character is performed by Steve Carell and has an Italian/Russian dialect which is terrible and unnecessary/misplaced, The voice of Anton Ego (Ratatouille) would have made a better dark/sinister voice (perhaps not suited for the story - but better for the character)
I felt the story too flat and the movie too focused on 3D features to find it as good as Toy Story, Ice Age, Over the Hedge etc.
HOWEVER!
Kudos to the animation studio - this is the finest quality of animated pictures I've ever seen (not counting Transformers and other realistic movies)
