The Thing from Another World (1951)
A Thrill from my Childhood
I first saw this film on television when I was about five or six years old. (I was born in 1949.) I remember being scared through most of it and two scenes particularly stand out. The first is when the men are sent out into the Arctic cold to discover what object has crashed; they can make out something under the ice as they move around trying to get a handle on its size and end up in a circle! Stunned, they look around at each other as realization dawns. I bet my eyes were like pizzas as it also dawned on me!
The second scene is the end (in fact, right before 'The End') when the reporter on a call to his bosses is relaying the fantastical event and warns everyone to, "Watch the skies." Well, that just about had this little girl hiding under a table!
It's always been one of my favorite sci-fi/horror movies and I was thrilled to finally be able to own it. I pull it out to watch it now and then, and smile with my memories all the way through it! When you watch it (and I definitely think you should) think of that little girl seeing her first scary movie.
