Attack on Titan (2013–2023)

There was a LOT of love put into this.
26 May 2024
Oh, where to start.

The music. The writing. The visuals. So much to take in. If some genius is able to make this into a successful live action thing, they'd have made history.

I've been into Anime since Science Team Ninja Gatchaman (Known in America as, "Battle Of The Planets," back then). When I was told about AOT, I didn't think much of it. Then, after starting a fresh bottle of tequila, I started from the first episode: "To You, in 2000 Years." WOW. Just WOW. The heartbreak. Hitting the viewer with the intensity of any child's love for their Mother.

The viewer will live the characters' lives. The pains and regrets. The growth and the losses.

This is an amazing show.

Well worth your time.

Star Trek: Picard (2020–2023)

Ten Stars For Season Three!
22 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Yeah. Seasons one and two don't exist and should have never happened.

The Star Trek beancounters ought to see what makes a series with this kind of fanbase excited, and wanting to come back for more.

One example: Drama.

Ro and Picard have a history of pain and betrayal. They resolved this in a way that would bring a ST-TNG fan's eye water. Their breath falter and hesitate.

Another example: Score.

Pulling musical cues from almost all of the past Star Trek movies and series, while adding the occasional flair of new instrumentals molded seamlessly with the subject matter, and at the precise time? Things like that are what help to weld scenes into the minds of the viewer.

Final (But probably not) example: USE WHAT WORKS!!

Jonathan Frakes (Number One) is a well known and accomplished director. Engaging him to direct episodes was a brilliant move.

Buy this season, fellow Trekkers.

You won't regret it.

2000 Mules (2022)

Not a documentary, but a horror movie.
28 May 2022
I pre-ordered this movie in DVD format when it was first out for sale from Salem Media. When it arrived on May 11th, I sat and watched it.

The attention to detail in explaining the investigations done by TrueTheVote were methodical and easy to understand. They deliberately narrowed their search so that outliers couldn't be factored into the data for the Geo Tracking used. They were very specific about what they were looking for.

The fact that TrueTheVote had testimony from a whistleblower from the outset simply compounded the issue.

There was a, "Beginning," round table conversation with Sebastian Gorka, Larry Elder, and others about the claimed issues with the 2020 election. Then, there was an, "After," conversation with the same people. Gorka even commented that those who criticize this movie would make the claim that Geo Tracking was an, "Invasion of privacy." Turns out that his comment was prophetic as that's exactly one of the criticisms that was laid out after the movie was released.

Unlike other D'Souza movies, this one has very little re-enactment footage. There are short news videos from the 2020 election with anchors reporting on that fateful night and some actual video surveillance taken from the areas of ballot drop boxes.

I would highly recommend this movie as it's currently the #1 DVD sold on Amazon right now. Buy two, and give one to a friend.

Edit/Update 6-22-22

I've kept the review page up on my computer since I wrote mine above on May 28th, refreshing it on occasion.

Hilariously, a majority of the one-star reviews are from accounts less than weeks old. It seems like they just sign up to bash this movie to give it lower ratings. If they were so confident of their positions, you'd think that they wouldn't have to resort to that kind of tactic.

Just a curious oddity.

And I have screenshots of a bunch of them that I've shared.

This is mainly cutscenes from the game.

If you haven't played Alien Isolation, this might interest you -for a bit. At least until you see the bad animation and non-existent lip syncing from the characters, except for the aliens. One character says a whole sentence of dialogue, and her mouth never closes.

You'd get more from just playing the actual game. I'd pass on this.

My fellow shipmates? Have a few shots, and enjoy ridiculousnes

There is so much wrong with this film, there's no need to describe it. All I have to say is this: The hunt was awesome. The CGI sucked. Yet, the story was solid. I actually enjoyed this horrible movie. As an old Boatswain's Mate, Third class. 1.7 thumbs up.

Surprisingly well done movie, and I had a lot of doubts!
24 December 2017
No spoilers here. They timed the scenes perfectly, placed the dialogues where they needed to be to make it all work, and the story wasn't muddled my the SFX. This is exactly what was needed to allow the Godzilla monster universe to get rolling after Gareth Edward's Godzilla was released. Only gave it nine stars because of the stereotypical United States military personnel are a bunch of warmongering maniacs storyline. As a military veteran, that was a little bit insulting. Looking past that, though... This is exactly the right film that should start the setup for the soon-to-come King Kong Versus Godzilla movie that fans have been waiting for. Well done!

I'm a gun nut, and even I learned something from this movie.
29 January 2014
This was an awesome documentary. Starting from today's politically charged climate -showing the diversity of the, "Gun Culture," then going into the history of this right. It delves deep into the thoughts and words of those who wrote the second amendment. Then, it runs through the historical calender concerning the assaults against this right by media and politics. I never even knew about, "The Battle of Athens," after World War 2. Even if you could care less about the right to keep and bear arms, this movie is quite captivating. Ice-T's deep and forceful voice places the script into the viewer's mind with a large ball peen hammer -making SURE you will remember what is said. And, it's important that you do just that. There is no opinion in the narrator. No biased narrative. Just plain, historical facts.

You'll come back to this one

Warning: Spoilers
I came back to Gamera after revisiting the series from the MST3K DVDs I bought. I knew there were a few updated new movies out back in the '90s and finally was compelled to buy the box set. I don't regret it.

This second movie of the trilogy begins with a freak meteor storm that impacts Japan and surrounding areas. Folks go investigate the crater, learn the meteor slowed down and disappeared, get a scientist babe involved, etc. Things start happening, and they seemed to occur as if the incidents started at the crater and moved in a deliberate march towards population. "Maybe the meteor moved."

Long story short, the rock spawned a silicon beast with lots of little beasts and a flower the size of a building which will launch a seed into space. And Gamera appears to save the day. Eventually.

The SFX were done very well. The destruction of an entire city, Gamera's new retractable fins (Who knew Gamera was a convertible?) and new, "Mana Blast."

The acting was pretty good as well. Asagi and Osako, the girl who helped Gamera in the previous movie and the inspector (Now he's a security guard at a warehouse full of beer -SWEET!), return.

Not as good as the third Gamera movie, but still ranking up there for me.

There's a special surprise I'd just discovered that compelled me to write this, though. Yesterday, I popped this in and started it up so I could sleep (I seem to sleep better if the sounds of giant Japanese monsters ripping through cities are playing in my head -don't ask me why). I must have changed the audio settings in my sleep. There's three on my DVD: English 1, English 2 and Japanese. Well, all the times I watched this movie I had it set to the first. While sleeping, I set it to second and OMG! The Colonel suddenly sounded like Bill Clinton, launching wisecracks at every opportunity. Asagi sounded like Daisy Duke with a thicker accent. And whenever a crowd of Japanese folks was running for their lives from certain destruction, someone always yelled, "HOLY CRAAAP!!" I couldn't stop laughing. I don't know if this was some kind of fun humor, or a cruel prank on the movie's producers.

If for no other reason, rent this DVD and set the audio for some fun. It'll be worth it.

I'm going to see if this was done to the other two Gamera movies today.
