Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
A First class Sci-Fi movie - Deserves 10 Stars
This film has been described as a mixture of "Groundhog day" and "Starship troopers". I agree, but this is one hell of a movie. If you love Sci-Fi you will definitely like it. I loved it.
It is based on a Japanese graphic novel, and one can sense that in some of the scenes. There is not much of a dialogue and some of the scientific explanations are a bit simple. Also one may wonder why e.g. a first class scientist, who has been labeled weird, has been assigned the job of a welder in a weapon factory.
Tom Cruise is here in his typical role as the smiling hero who fights for a just cause. Emily Blunt's acting is also superb. The movie is full of clichés, macho stuff - and witty jokes. But guess what, it works, and this is probably Cruise's best movie in years.
Sum up: A first class, fast paced (and funny) science fiction movie. Sci-Fi and action movie fans will love it, but others may think less of it.
Silencio en la nieve (2011)
Enjoyable Spanish crime drama – Flawed manuscript
If you love B-movies, about criminal investigations, and aren't too picky about details, then you will like this Spanish crime drama.
The plot: In 1943 a serial killer is on the loose, among the Spanish soldiers (the so called Blue Division - Division Espanola de Voluntarios) who are fighting alongside the Germans against the Russian on the Eastern front. The only clue is a part of Spanish nursery rhyme that is carved into the chest of the victims.
The private Arturo Andrade, a former police inspector, is ordered to investigate the case. The problem? The Blue Division consists of around 18.000 men, and the task is seemingly impossible. It is also extremely difficult for Arturo, being a private, to investigate a crime within the military hierarchy, during wartime.
Arturo tries his best, and slowly manages to gather the evidence he needs. Here in lies the flaw of the manuscript; the clues come a bit too cheap. One scene - where Arturo scours through mail inside a truck which is driven at full speed - is particularly awkward. The end is also not the typical CSI-end (we found the killer and sent him to jail).
Despite these flaws, I must admit that I enjoyed this movie and recommend it to those who like B-crime dramas.
Napola - Elite für den Führer (2004)
A mesmerizing story about the friendship of two teenage boys in the Third Reich.
This high quality German movie - who's original title is "Napola - Elite für den Führer" - is an absolute gem (made in 2004). It is not an action movie, but first and foremost a mesmerizing, albeit tragic, story about the friendship of two teenage boys in the Third Reich.
It tells the story of the poor 16 year old boy Friedrich, who on the basis of his boxing talent, is, in the year 1942, admitted to one of Hitler's elite schools Napola (short for Nationalpolitischen Erziehungsanstalten). Friedrich considers this his chance to succeed in life.
At Napola Friedrich befriends Albrecht (played by Tom Schilling), the son of a Gauleiter (high ranking Nazi party leader). Albrecht is literary minded, and his father considers him weak. It is Albrecht who stirs doubt, in Friedrich's mind, about the Nazi cause.
The viewer is introduced to the Nazi-brainwashing of young "elite" Germans, and we learn what happens to those who can't cope with the physical and mental pressure.
The acting by Max Riemelt (Friedrich) and Tom Schilling (Albrecht) is superb. My only complaint with the script is Friedrich's flawed boxing talent; he is, at times, unable to finish off his opponents, which basically makes him a hopeless boxer.
The movie is directed by the German movie director Dennis Gansel (born in 1973). He has produced quite a number of movies, among them "Die Welle in 2008 (e. The Wave) and the vampire movie "We Are The Night" (2012).
