Diabolical: BFFs (2022)
Slows the momentum of the show to a screeching halt
The first few episodes have been fairly decent but this one is just awful. I genuinely have no idea how the concept for this episode was even greenlit or even who the target audience even is. The lame toilet humor is literally too stupid for even the youngest folks and the typical Boys-brand edginess with drugs and violence doesn't even save it.
Nowhere near the standard for the other episodes and literally brings the overall value of Diabolical down simply by existing.
Busanhaeng 2: Bando (2020)
Just a stack of horror/action cliches, doesn't hold a candle to Train of Busan
This isn't a sequel at all. Tonally, these movies couldn't be more different. The first movie was an emotional roller coaster that got you invested in the characters. Every single close call felt meaningful because we actually wanted these people to survive.
Peninsula almost manages to make the viewers feel the opposite because it commits some of the most flagrant horror/thriller movie cliches at the worst times: Our heroine leaves a person who she apparently KNOWS is a scumbag, on the floor to come full circle and become the final antagonist in the end. Our hero apparently has perfect accuracy to shoot out a spotlight on a moving vehicle but frequently forgets he has a gun in his hands when there are enemy vehicles driving perfectly alongside them.
Don't even get me started on the final scene when the little girl and old man apparently have to be standing out in the open to distract the Captain with the remote control car. You really couldn't do that from behind cover?
I always consider a horror movie to be garbage whenever the characters start to behave irrationally just to push the plot forward and this movie is as guilty as they come. This isn't even mentioning the apparently unstoppable SUV the teenager is driving.
This movie is just pure disappointment all around for people who were expecting a tonally faithful sequel or even a cohesive popcorn horror flick.
Into the Night (2020)
Solid character development, interesting premise, decent storytelling
Into the Night definitely has some of the better sci-fi storytelling I've seen from a show in a long time. While the show definitely is a little shaky on the science part of sci-fi, it does do a decent job of hooking the viewers in with fully fleshing out the characters involved.
I also enjoyed the multi-lingual approach that the movie uses for different interactions with the characters as it makes sense for the passengers on an international plane to switch back and forth between their mother tongue, French, English, etc. I found that realism to be particularly refreshing.
The characters themselves behaved very realistically as well. Some might find their actions to be questionable at times, but to those I would say take a look at the actions of many during this current pandemic we are dealing with. Some people are emotional, irrational, selfish, angry, etc. while others are dependable, level-headed, ethical. This can also change on a dime depending on the level of pressure each character is under.
Very captivating story-telling, tons of thrilling moments, and engaging characters are definitely enough to recommend this one!
