Anything for Love (1993)
Trans movie if you ignore some bits
I'll be the first to admit that this movie has some pretty serious production value and editing issues. There's even two scenes in it that have clearlu been flipped by accident. HOWEVER, if you're willing to overlook that, this movie is actually a really touching story of a trans female character. With the exclusion of only one or two scenes that don't fit, I was able to very easily watch the movie through a trans lens, and found I that that interpretation really improved the movie by giving it a more complex, deeper purpose. It added nuance to a movie that, if taken at face value (as the writers probably intended) is really very shallow. I think one has to ask oneself, isn't dressing as a girl for so long and with such enthusiasm a little excessive, just to try to get past a bully? And doesn't getting that bully to fall in love with you (as a girl) seem kind of time consuming and counterproductive if you're not at least a little enjoying the attention? AND why would you tell such an extremely specific story of being a young boy trying on his sisters dresses for the first time, unless naybe it was true? Like I said, if you decide that Chris is genuinely trans, and is discovering that fact through this wacky, unlikely turn of events, a lot of weird, inexplicable scenes in the movie make a lot more sense.
Long story short, this movie is not intended to be a coming of age trans story, but if you want to see it that way, it actually really fits, and because of this, it's one of my all time favorite movies.
