Absolutely terrifying
23 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Although it's clear this film was made somewhat on a budget, the differing styles seamlessly blended together of found CIA footage, homemade video recordings and professional videography really helps bring in the unsettling atmosphere. I've seen this film several times, and although it's primarily scary moments come from jump scares and sound cues (with heartbeats and radio sounds) it still never ceases to be creepy as hell. They also blend an extremely real, mysterious and scary occurrence with MK-Ultra and scientific terminology alongside the unknown antagonist, something which really makes everything cohesively terrifying.

I regret watching this movie every time because it makes me want to pee my pants but I also can't get enough. Brilliant.

Absolutely classic horror film
9 November 2019
Although I first watched this with my father at a younger age, I recently rewatched it and it is just as entertaining and terrifying as it was a decade ago. Something that I highly enjoy about older movies that don't necessarily rely on CGI and other special effects only recently developed is that what distinguishes the quality of the work is heavily dependent on the writing.

Dialogue well written and gripping, with excellent acting on all parts. You're kept on the edge of your seat, and left feeling pure terror. There's no reliance on sexualization, jump scares, overtly grotesque or disturbing acts; rather it is unsettling as it claims to alter reality itself; a pure type of doom that you feel from deep within and that has no sense of relief; a Lovecraftian-esque design. It's brilliant, captifying, and the special effects, although easily outdated, are so beautifully incorporated that it hasn't gone out of style. This is the type of horror that needs to be noted for future generations as something to aspire to achieve.

Extremely well done and I can almost guarantee that I will come back to re-watch this in another decades time and will enjoy it all the same.

Orphan (2009)
Excellent horror film, I've rewatched it many times.

Warning: Spoilers
Insanely high rewatch value. I remember absolutely loving this film the first time I saw it, and with each viewing every few years I continue to enjoy it. Recently chose to re-watch it with my partner as a certain news story which seems to be plaguing the U.S. news channels has a strikingly similar situation; so much so that I almost find it incredulous. Regardless of whether or not it inspired a real life copycat situation, this is an excellent film, wonderfully paced, mysterious, and phenomenally acted. I felt all of the characters really filled their role, and Vera Farmiga, one of my absolute favorite actresses, slayed this character as she always does. Pure brilliance. Very little critiques except for the fact that I didn't like the father in the slightest, and wished that there were more "realizations" of her true nature to validate the protagonist's reality prior to the ending.

100% Hotter (2016–2018)
Reality television.
3 November 2019
Let's not fool ourselves here: this series isn't here to do anything except exist. It doesn't have a deeper meaning, a hidden message, a political agenda, it's just...a makeover show. Of course it's going to lack individuality; it is essentially three professionals giving a makeover to a random person. Are there times when I disagree? Absolutely. I prefer Karen Williams as a stylist, and I do believe the makeup artist goes overboard and has difficulties tone matching pale skin (which is quite a problem given this is in London.) As someone who has lived in London, this makeup style is definitely quite characteristic of the geographical zone, and controversial as well. The hair stylist for me has always seemed to be the one who tries to preserve the individuality of the guests the most.

That said...this is a makeover show. There's nothing more profound to it. If they do not like it, it's a shower and a new day in a few hours, no harm no foul. It does get kind of mean, most reality television is like that. I would not be surprised if the polls were fake and the street reviewers guided with leading questions or completely scripted. But honestly, who cares? It delivers exactly what it promises, and even though the forced mirror chats are eyeroll worthy, it's nothing more than a show to put on while eating television and scrolling on the phone as background noise, or a series to watch while talking and not pausing during bathroom breaks.

Treating it on the same level as non-reality television shows or movies is, in my opinion, unfair, as they have entirely different goals and are geared towards completely different audiences. Nobody takes themselves seriously here; it's a fun dress up show with biased opinions from people who want to go on TV. I think for what it is, it's decent. Thus the five. It succeeds all expectations and doesn't surpass any, sometimes disappoints and equally sometimes surprises. It's lunch and naptime telly. I'm fine with it.

Diagnosis (2019)
Phenomenal documentary
3 November 2019
I lack any critiques for this series, except perhaps that there are only seven episodes! I'm invested in these cases, and want to know how they end up; the stories are told in a beautifully real way although it allows you to view the intricacies and struggles in each situacion. Inspiring doctor as well, renewed my passion for my studies (healthcare, although a different field) with each episode that I viewed; truly a beautiful role model and such an excellent concept. Very well done.

Fractured (I) (2019)
Enjoyable with a twist
3 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Although the twist for me was somewhat predictable, I enjoyed the movie quite a bit. It was slow during certain points but once it kicks into gear, it really keeps up the pace.

Unfortunately, I wasn't a huge fan of this actor in this role and found it hard to really delve in due to the fact that I simply feel he wasn't the best choice; his features are too characteristic to play such a dual character. I feel like he almost has a niche; and being an instantaneously likeable and empathetic character isn't it. He'd be better as a downright villain or someone less...family-esque. I just don't see him as the boring 'ol farmer Joe dad gone mad he was meant to be here. It's too easy to view him negatively throughout the entire thing because he has quite a serious tone.

That's not to say he isn't skilled, simply I would have preferred someone else for this role. Then again, I also dislike Ryan Gosling in romantic movies and much prefer him in other, serious roles (such as The Place Beyond the Pines and Lars and the Real Girl), and that seems to be an unpopular opinion, so perhaps it's just me.

Overall decent, I just feel the casting made it more predictable for me than it would have been had there been someone who seems...more innocent? Suburban dad-like? Disappointed look but warm heart-esque? Same thing with the dad in Eli (2019) they just don't fit their roles. Like Max Martini, Sam Worthington is simply TOO serious and "sinister" looking to fit into the "sweet and caring dad with slight aggressive tendencies" role. Too mysterious and grim in the face to do it.

Toc Toc (2017)
Surprisingly enjoyable!
3 November 2019
I found it lighthearted, hilarious, and an enjoyable watch. Initially I chose this film as one to fall asleep with, however was soon captivated by the superb writing and acting and finished the entire film even though it was entirely too late to be awake on a weeknight. Would highly recommend, and is one of the few films I've seen fully in Spanish.

Not bad, but the ending was disappointing.
2 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The title says it all. I enjoyed watching the film, however the closer it moved towards the finale, the less interested I became. It has slight incestuous vibes as well as an almost sexual assault which left the film somewhat uncomfortable to watch. Also, I did have quite a few questions left unanswered, but well, adds to the mystery. Overall not a bad watch, but I don't think I'd watch it again.

Decent with a twist
2 November 2019
It was an enjoyable film, albeit with a surprise ending that was totally unexpected. Not bad, however lacks rewatch value. That said, were there to be a sequel, I'd definitely look forward to it.
