*spoilers!!!*
To my opinion, Panic Room was made with a great fealing for building up the tension and keeping it that way. I got incredibly nervous when Jodie Foster ran out into her bedroom to get her cell phone while the burglars were comming back up.
However, there were few strange parts in the story which altered my overall rating on this film.
1. If the panic room is so designed that it would imposible to get in, why is it possible that intruders can easily access the phone lines and the ventilation shafts? I mean, that clearly showed that this panic room was not as safely as it should have been. The drain tunnel wich Jodie Foster and her daughter used to send light signals through it could also have been used by the burglars to blow in gas or something.
2. Why wouldn't there be any other means of communication in the panic room? Now the victims had only 1 phone that they could use, so that if the phone would not work (which was the case), they would be stuck there forever! There should have been something like a cell phone with a large antenna or a 27MC radio.
3. Why was it impossible to talk to the police? The burglars could not hear Jodie Foster talking, so if she just said like "my daughter is held hostage and if you show up she will be shot", than the police would at least try to find a solution. If the squadteam showed up just 10 minutes earlier, then maybe the daughter would have been shot because the burglars would think that Jodie Foster alarmed the police!!
Without these flaws I would give the movie an 8, but now only a small 6. If you shoot a movie at such a small spot with a small number of actors, than you should invest the energy and time you gained by that into a foolproof script.
