The Walking Dead: Welcome to the Tombs (2013)
Season 3, Episode 16

Good, but not quite brilliant
2 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I have to agree with most people on here when I say that this episode would've been better as a general episode, maybe the penultimate one. The episode starts out tense enough and there's a well-planned build up to the main "clash"...which never really happens. The scene with Carl and the young boy is quite shocking, but a bit misplaced. The Governor's final breaking point was criticised by many fans, but it was good to symbolise an end to something - his sanity. AMC have done what they usually do. Concluded a season in a way no one would have expected. His cruel trapping of Andrea with Milton was by far one of the best plots running through the whole episode, but the main line of it was a bit quick and messy in motives and plot movement. However, the ending was truly one of the most emotional and introducing the new survivors to the prison is an interesting hook for the next series. Most of those survivors being children and old people, let's just hope season 4 isn't another like season 2.

Higgledy Piggledy Horror
23 February 2013
This film has such a great concept it's a shame it was done in such a bad way as this. To sum it up in a sentence, it's a bit all over the place.

The actors are fairly good and the storyline starts off quite strong, but around half an hour into the film and I really don't understand what's going on.

The camera angles are meant to mirror those used by camera men, but this technique is badly executed as there are many instances when it would've been impossible for the crew to know where the character's were going to go next. The cameras also seem incapable of filming any of the actors faces for a good part of the movie when they first arrive at their mental hospital.

Most of the characters have had numerous mood swings and pointless exchanges and many of them just disappear from time to time without anyone realising.

The actual plot gets a bit messy towards the middle when an attempt is made to develop certain characters and the "spooky" goings on and ends up down-right silly at the end. A lot of previously mentioned events just get left behind without any further explanation.

If you want a good horror then this isn't it, in-fact, I don't even know what genre to class it as. It's 70% anger/arguing 25% faffing around and 5% "horror".

Please don't waste your time with this film, you'll become as bored as those who directed it did and simply want to just skip to the poorly rushed ending.

A good British comedy
21 February 2013
Last year there were very few films that I found that funny, mainly because a lot of the humour was American.

This British film gives a refreshing look on the romantic comedy and has a simple yet interesting plot.

Both main actors are brilliantly suited to their characters, but it is mainly Stephen Merchant who gets the most laughs - kind of stealing the show really. It's not a perfect film, it's a bit predictable in parts, but not boringly so.

Definitely worth the watch!!

(Just don't watch it with your parents)

Definitely not a waste of time

Watching this movie is another one of those things where you go away feeling a little different. The ideas projected by this film strike a chord with many people, especially when you make the comparison between time in this movie and money. It really does make you think.

Instead of money, people earn and pay in time, but, as with any movie this style, there's a crime going on. The rich are living forever and the poor are dying young. So out to change he system and saved thousands of lives is...Justin Timberlake, as Will along with Sylvia, portrayed by Amanda Seyfried.

Surprisingly Seyfried and Timberlake make quite a dynamic couple and it's always refreshing seeing actors in different genres for a change. The two main characters come across surprisingly well, Will (Timberlake) making an almost instant emotional connection. Sylvia (Seyfried) is a little more clichéd character, but adds beautifully to the film none the less. Although her heels were practically sellotaped to her feet through the whole film....you never actually see her with any normal shoes...

Overall the film is quite jumpy at the start, a little bit rushed and then a little too slow, but it really comes into its own in the middle and towards the end, even some comedy is unearthed here and there.

The addition of the talented Cillian Murphy, gives the film that little extra glamour that adds to the list of reasons of why you have to see it. And the touching moments really do tug at your heartstrings. The music, composed by none other than Craig Armstrong, emphasises the gravity and power of the scenes, creating, at times, quite a tense atmosphere.

Watch this movie if you liked Contaigon, or just generally any action/adventurey type movie.

Definitely Need to Watch
26 October 2011
When I first went to watch the film I admit I was sceptical about the age certificate it had been given and how it would impact the plot. 12a films usually don't have such paranoia or scary narratives so I was glad when this film didn't skirt around the edges of fear and instead plunged straight in.

The first thing about the film you realise is that there are a lot of characters which makes the film uniquely interesting to watch, there are very rarely and slow moments as we switch from character to character and the tension runs throughout.

Matt Damon,Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Gwenyth Paltrow all give stunningly realistic and compelling performances all the way through the film, making us emotionally attached in an instant and eager to know the fate of their characters.

The only thing that could be improved with this film is perhaps the closure of some issues. A few things are left open towards the end and, although they don't directly link to the plot, you find yourself thinking, what happened with such-a-thing? or what was it in that scene then? Overall the movie remains mysterious and slightly too realistic, but this instills the needed amount of anticipation and dread for on-the-edge-of-your-seat viewing.

Along with the music, camera work, lighting and edit, the film comes together into something particularly special, quite an intelligent film which doesn't have to be too graphic to be scary or over the top on emotions. The goosebumps do raise their heads at some points during the film, but in a good way that fits perfectly with the reaction expected.

This film is definitely worth watching, maybe not for younger children as it may be slightly too dramatic or sometimes a bit too complicated/fast paced for them to keep up with. The creepy thing is, when I watched it in the cinema, everyone began to cough and sniff, so don't see it if you're paranoid!

The Happening (2008)
Happens all too fast
20 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The Happening starts off very tense and mysterious, the atmosphere being one of foreboding and terror. When people start killing themselves off it's really creepy for the audience as there is no explanation as to why and the following struggle to survive is exciting to watch. However, as the films nears its end the storyline twists and comes to a stop quite abruptly with not much of an explanation of why the happening actually happened or why the population seemed back to normal so quickly. There is also one other thing that bugs the audience's minds, how come some people don't get affected by the plants and they watch in terror at everyone else? The idea was chillingly brilliant and the acting, sound and filming for the past part very good, but the ending completely spoils the climax of what could've been quite a good film. The writers seemed to have made the ending up in a rushed five minutes...

Apollo 18 (2011)
Whole Other World of Horror
11 September 2011
Intelligently made, this film combines camera-work similar to that used in Paranormal Activity and Cloverfield. Simplistic in its plot, the film really does boast some very frightening, nail-biting scenes. Not for the faint hearted, it also amplifies the smallest and most rational of fears into something chilling and blood-curdlingly frightening, playing on the fear that something is wrong, something is out there.

Although the film has its faults, namely near the end when the viewer is unsure as to which person's camera is being used, this can add to the feel of the film, reflecting the mindset of the equally disorientated characters.

The film could be slightly more emotional than it is, but it is after all a horror.

Leaving you with something to think about at the end gives the film an edge that makes you remember it for a while after.

If you liked Paranormal Activity or Cloverfield, then this film is definitely for you, giving you a good dose of mind-jolting jumps when you least expect them. This film is definitely worth the watch and will have you jumping out of your skin.

Bridesmaids (I) (2011)
8/10
Too much hype
21 August 2011
The high expectations of Bridesmaids really lets it down. Don't get me wrong, the film is genuinely quite funny, but knowing when those funny bits are from the trailers and reviews just lessens their impact. It's almost as if you're thinking "Ok I know I have to laugh in a minute".

The characters are introduced well at the start and they make you more interested in the plot, but some of them disappear halfway through the film when they could be used a lot more; they're definitely needed. Chris O'Dowd is one of the best actors in the movie though the acting throughout is quite good for a comedy.

One other thing that makes the film slightly less powerful, is that the main character isn't really introduced very well at the start so you don't sympathise with her later on in the plot.

Altogether Bridesmaids is a good watch for anyone who likes comedy, just don't expect too much from it.

Little Ray of Sunshine
10 July 2011
This film made me smile, laugh and cry, filling a satisfying gap between a flamboyant feel good comedy and a gritty family drama. For fans of comedy/adventure, this film is the one for you and is a must-see if you enjoyed 'Millions' or 'Son of Rambow' as it blends the different shades of genre into a beautiful sunny yellow film. It will brighten up your view of the world and let in a ray of much needed happiness into your life.

The Hoover family is a cleverly created, dysfunctional family by Michael Arndt, Jonathon Dayton and Valerie Faris, who intrepidly go on a seven hundred mile road trip in desperation to take their daughter Olive (Abigail Breslin) to a beauty pageant. The family, combined with Frank Ginsberg (Steve Carell) a brilliantly played suicidal businessman who's Sheryl Hoover's brother and Dwayne Hoover, portrayed amazingly by Paul Dano, Sheryl's son, who has a burning hatred for all his family and refuses to speak, battle their way through an army of problems, all for one goal. But will they get there in time? 'Little Miss Sunshine' combines a variety of non-diagetic, instrumental music throughout the film to successfully shine a picture of carefree optimism onto the storyline, often being used in place of dialogue to create a refreshing atmosphere. This technique is used especially well right at the beginning of the film when the characters are introduced through a series of close ups and expert extreme close ups, to make the audience instantly aware of them. Introducing the characters without having them talking makes the beginning very effective.

The realism of the film's narrative also burns interest: many of the problems the family encounter boldly reflect the lives of you and me, enabling people aged between fifteen and forty five to relate some of their experiences to those of the characters. But what makes this film really stand out from the usual crowd of perfectly packaged productions, is the fact that none of the characters have their acting talents crushed under a mountain of disguise. They are portrayed as ordinary human beings and the actors represent them as naturally as they live, unlike most films which constantly churn out polished plastic dolls.

Without the characters, the film would fall flat on its face. Each one seems to be amazingly crafted to fit together into a captivating film. Olive Hoover (Abigail Breslin) is portrayed as a young girl whose dreams are to win beauty pageants. Her colourful costume combined with her blissful sanguinity of the world around her, complete the narrative of the film and gives it a purpose and something to revolve around. Her character makes the film a must-see for reformers as she offers a different view on the world that not every adult can see; lighting up otherwise dark situations.

At the start of the film, you are plunged right into the centre of the storyline, which completely disorientates you. But this problem is ingeniously solved by the introduction of the character Frank Ginsberg (Steve Carell) who, like the audience, acts as an observer of the family who adds a subtle blend of comedy as he goes along.

The happy rays of light that the film casts are quite often punctured by the bad language which tumbles out of the characters' mouths, which slightly damages the feel-good, happy genre the film creates, but it does show that not everything in life is perfect; the film included!

Pandorum (2009)
8/10
Two men wake up on a ship somewhere in space with no idea of their mission and are terrorised by mutant cannibals
26 June 2011
The film Pandorum features a very tense plot, but the way it has been edited together slightly lets it down. The start is intense and allows the audience to fully feel the force of confusion from the main characters. However, as the story progresses, a lot of the intense scary, action scenes loose their edge as everything is edited together so quickly. It makes it disorientating, but too so for the audience to realise what has just happened. The special effects and setting of the movie are amazingly done, as are the costumes and lighting of the scenes. Although the film has an intriguing plot, it is quite hard to follow the characters' actions throughout as the audio from some of the characters is sometimes very hard to make out. You may find yourself rewinding it or watching with subtitles. Altogether the film is excellent, an enticing mix of horror, sci-fi and drama, constant suspense injected throughout the narrative and engaging central characters. A must watch for sci-fi horror fans.
