Madame Web (2024)
Student film with professinals and big budget
What a weird movie. Its definitely bad but it was the most enjoyable bad movie I have seen. It starts with so many off moments, off cuts, off takes. But is has a nice look to it and a nice vibe to the environment, I am actually admiring some of the look. It felt like a good 90's movie. Then it gets better but the action is just is filled with clichés and off takes. The acting is mediocre but it is hard to separate the poor writing from it. Some of the dialogue is just horrendous but then I forget it is bad and the story and powers keep it going forward. Some of the talking is clearly recorded in a studio after filming. What a weird movie.
Argylle (2024)
Your favorite bands sixth album that sounds like the old good times but just has lost its soul.
Watched it because I am a Matthew Vaughn fan. Out of the gate the first scene feels off. It looks good but the soul is not in it. That is how to basically describe the whole movie. Nothing just feels right. The story is fun, nothing new, with plenty of twists, with a good execution it could have been amazing. The cast is great, full on talent. Everyone just delivers a basic role. The baddie is just a basic baddie with out any soul. And the goodie is just a basic goodie with out a soul. The action had several Matthew Vaughn moments his movies are known for, they just had lost heir soul. One scene for example had a new action I had never seen before, beautifully shot but the hits felt like they did not connect, off putting beauty.
Loki (2021)
One of the few series with a great ending.
Writing this after finishing the last episode, I can be happy and grateful this got made. 7/10 for something was lacking in in, hard to say what. It is not the story, for it was amazing. It was not for the casting for it was amazing. It was not for the meaning for it was great. It was not for the CGI for it was first class. It was not for the vibe for it was some of the best I have experienced. This was a truly worthy marvel series.
Maybe if they had cut it 10% shorter I would have given it 10/10, maybe. There were some off scenes and off episodes but they were accompanied with greatness. Well done.
The Covenant (2023)
Grips deep to your soul. What a nice ride.
I started watching it expecting another war movie but with Guy Richie style, both assumptions were wrong. Not a trace of Richie and a new story in the war genre. The movie was a flop but I can only assume because it was hard to market. A few scenes in and it starts to get a hold of you and the hold only gets deeper. Main driving force is well cast main characters and the situation they get into. Saw one clip of a scene on YouTube and just had to watch the whole thing.
Could have been tighter but by no means did I get bored.
The action is nothing special. Well done but nothing new.
This may become on of those movies I watch every 3 years.
One Piece (2023)
Succesful adapation, enjoyable to watch but has some bad directing.
This is from the perspective of the anime watcher. Cast well. Especially the clown Buggy and Luffy. The world is faitful to the original as in characters have horns, weird hair and so on. The tempo is condensed and the story goes forward way way faster than in the anime. The action is mostly good with some oddities as in sometimes things just feel off. Mostly it feels good but has bad directing. Things just sometimes feel off. Some takes feel off and some interactions feel off. There is no tension building anywhere. Missed opportunities everywhere. The series is like a well furnished room where some of the colors don't work well together. I don't think I have ever felt this effect this strongly watching anything. With small adjustment to editing and directing this could be 9/10.
I was most impressed how they made Buggy the clown work so well. Better character than in the anime by a long shot.
Ahsoka (2023)
Boring. When things happen, its good, but it is just dragging.
I started watching exited. Ahsoka seemed really cool in Mandalorian. She did not disappoint. Everything else than the action is so boring, it is dragging so much it was painful to watch. I stopped after second episode and I was skipping in that. One baddie seemed cool but other than that the acting is just mediocre. Damn, I am pissed I wasted my time watching this and even more pissed they made a boring series with a interesting character.
This is the point where this review starts dragging because there is really not much more to say. CGI is spot on good. Everything else orbiting around production value is good.
Barry (2018)
Restarted watching because of amazing clips on youtube.
The concept is good, well cast but I sopped initially half way season 1. When it is good, it is really good but there is some stuff that I just don't care to watch. I have a hard time putting finger to exactly why but some of the conflict is not done that well and is not that interesting.
Several in some way unique deaths. When it comes to action and its set ups, it feels fresh.
Main character is great and has a interesting growth arc. All secondary characters all well written without exception. Third season started feeling uninteresting even when the setup for it gave way for a possible one of the best final seasons.
6 stars for uneven quality, I had to skip some scenes because I just didn't care and let down of a final season..
The Flash (2023)
Mostly unpredictable, mostly fun with couple really bad jokes.
Coming into it Ezra's Flash has been the most annoying character in the DCU, it stops being that rather quickly. The movie gets into thick of it pretty fast and keeps the tempo up till the end. Most of the time it feels unpredictable while some of it is not, half fresh maybe the best way to describe it. I laughed several times almost to tears and a couple times the jokes where so bad it pulled me out. There was a lot of action but kind of forgot it happened, no super cool fast slowmo scenes like for example in x-men. It is hard to say what exactly it lacks. A lot did happen and it was mostly a joyful ride but nothing iconic. I don't think I will ever watch this again but have absolutely zero regrets watching it.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
Absolutely a good movie with a few mishaps at the end.
Not as good as the originals but the movie had a good feel from start to finish. Great banter, great dialogue and great characters. Well filmed. Good vfx. A few clichés at the ending and some wonky film making but good nonetheless.
The Good Place (2016)
From clished mainstream garbage in to a abolutely incredible unpredicatable journey.
It starts a a funny comedy that seems to lay out the most predictable story imaginable. Then episode by episode the world just keeps expanding and growing in to a actually respectable piece. Just when you think it has finally reached its potential it slaps you in the face and runs up hill with laser goats. Sadly some of the characters lack the same kind of build. Despite the 8 rating I find this to be one of the freshest series in the resent years.
