Yume (1990)
A lamentation for the human world.
This film is for sure a unique masterpiece from one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema. This film contains of seven histories that although they seem to be unlinked, they all together story the destruction of the nature as we know it. They show what will happen if humans continue not to respect Earth. But apart from its social message this film has a unique art value. Especially the part with Van Gong (pleasant surprise Martin Scorsese's acting) and the part with the nuclear disaster are very sentimental with a very simple way and the way that Kurosawa shows them is really fantastic! Surely one of the best films of 1990 decade and unfortunately not recognised in its time as usually happen with all great art masterpieces.
O Drakos (1956)
"Better to be "the dragon" than to be unknown".
One of the best comments about the human society and its madness for fame ever made. A pathetic and frightened, peaceful man because of his similar face with a famous and wanted criminal, "the dragon", gives up his normal but misery life in order to become at last a famous person. He becomes the leader of a criminal group (that they think him as "the dragon") in a great and ambitious operation. He also falls in love with a young and beautiful singer of the bar that is the center of this criminal group; but unfortunatelly she cannot understand the tragic emotional situation of this man. But after a while he is identified not to be "the dragon" by the members of this group and one of them in his anger, murders him. The scene of his death, with Dinos Iliopoulos (he plays this person) walking in the cold of Athens, bleeding and finally fall dead next to the rollway lines is one of the most sentimental scenes i have ever seen. The film shows how a person in order to escape from his miserable way of life and its daily awful routine he prefers to be thought as a criminal in order to be important for once in his life. It also shows the full of poverty and sadness small neighbours of a big city (Athens) and the misery that rounds every person living in a city like this. It shows the way from a poor and anxious life to a life full of deadly illussions that they finally lead to death. One of the best european films of the 1950 decade.
Ouranos (1962)
Back to your occupied country after loosing yourself in war.
This excellent film stories the long way of the returning in occupied Greece of a group of soldiers that fought the Germans in World War 2, after the relatively orders of the Greek army in Athens. The film shows with a unique way the depression that the war caused to this people that were fighting the enemy in the front line of war without thinking any positive thing for many days. It shows their loss of positive emotions and how memories of their old life (wives, girlfriends, daily routine, etc.) are hurting them because they know that this life won't be there when they finally arrive at home. Some of them go crazy or die before the arrival in their occupied home. The other ones are walking exhausted through the mountains of Greece and the only thing they see is snow, ruined villages from bombings or German attacks and a nature that is to die. All these, the fantastic cinematography and the deep analysis that the director does in its characters' psychology make this film a great present to the war filmography.
