The Diplomat (2023)
Looks promising but fails to deliver
I had started this series with very high hopes due to the trailer but this falls flat from the 2nd episode onwards. The protagonist's character is poorly written and so are the bunch of characters around her. In the whole series the only justice it does is to the character of UK PM. This is not a political thriller, this is infact a drama about dysfunctional marriage, extramarital attraction and relationships with some hint of political drama sprinkled here and there. Throughout the series the US ambassador to UK does nothing but tries to talk to UK foreign secretary over trivial matters and it looks forced upon to build sexual tension between them to show an upcoming affair in future. Although the "background " story of a international conflict building was good, but it was overshadowed by the sham of an impending divorce and affair. Given 5 * only for the political drama rest all is noise. Is skippable though ?
Call Me by Your Name (2017)
This is a movie about first love !
Before watching the movie I had happened to stumble upon the song " Mystery of Love" by Sujan Stephens. It was after a late night work session and I wanted to listen something soothing to put me to sleep. I immediately loved the song and it made me so happy high I stayed awake till 5 AM lying on my bed with so much warm fuzzy feelings I never felt before. It piqued my interest and then I decided to watch this movie. And my god, all those good and warm feelings came rushing back to me and stayed with me all throughout the movie. This movie will make you happy and break your heart in all possible ways by the time it ends. It will show you how beautiful life is with love and especially when its your first. I will not say who was better in acting or whose dialogues were prefect. This movie is like the afternoon siesta that you enjoy so much and become sad when the evening sets in. And the songs of Sujan Stephens fit in so flawlessly with the picturesque Italian sceneries and our lovebirds Elio and Oliver frolicking together.
At last I would say one thing " Call be by your name and I will call you by mine".
Dark (2017)
One of the best thrilling content ever created !!!
Dark is undeniably the best series of my life. Starting from the 1st episode I was hooked. The characters were so relatable and human I immediately thought I was a part of their life and the suspense building was off the charts. It was when I was mid of the SE 1 my mind was blown by the story. The season ended with a lots of questions left to be answered and my expectations were sky high from season 2. Believe me the 1 year wait was harrowing and the moment season 2 dropped I was again mind-blown by the rest of the story unfurling. I was like my god what has gone through the writer's minds while thinking of such marvelous piece of art. A lot of the questions raised in SE1 was answered in SE2 but again it raised a lot of new questions . As expected the season 2 ending was a cliffhanger. And by this time the story had became so interesting with a lot of at stake . In other words my expectation from SE3 was through the roof. SE3 wait was even more painful thankfully it came a bit early and this time I was again mind blown with the new characters casting choice. I was like how can be something so perfect.
If you are thinking I am just being a desperate fanboy then give it a shot you will not be disappointed. I can go on and on about the story, casting and screenplay but the most perfect part of this series is the OST it is just comes and nudges you to the emotional core and makes you live the scene like its real.
All in all the most memorable series I ever watched of my life, and it will remain like it for sometime.
October (2018)
A lovestory without a lovestory.
Cinema is an integral part of society where we revel upon our form of the art of story telling. Sometimes they speak of stories that make you laugh, cry , feel loved, experience thrill , fear and what not. But with all those plethora of stories there are some which leaves an indelible mark afterwards. "October" is such a story.
This movie is not easy to describe in words , but to sum up all I can say is it's a love-story without a love-story. This movie tells the story of human emotions, attachment to a certain idea of being attached, how a simplest thought of acquaintance can bring two people together in the most delicate way and in the toughest of times.
The actor Varun Dhawan although a starkid, this movie is the most defining moment of his career. This one definitely removes the usual stigma of star-kid tag from him and marks him as a talented actor. He can deliver given the right story.
Shoojit Sircar has again done with with his unconventional direction style and also the cinematography is beautiful. I can't help but mention a particular scene in the movie , the prelude to the climax was the most emotional and a perfect mise en scène for the climax, it will tear you apart from within and will still haunt you even long after the movie.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
Best movie about finding onself.
I saw the trailer about 2 months prior to the release. I immediately was intrigued by it, although not much a fan of Ben Stiller but I made sure to watch it. I completely loved the whole experience of seeing Ben portray Walter on the big screen. I had expectations from the trailer and the movie surpassed all of it. Ben Stiller plays the character of Walter Mitty perfectly. His direction and acting makes sure the audience connects with the character , when he day dreams and faces tough choices in life. We will definitely relate to Walter Mitty being an introvert and a wallflower the way the initial story-line is build up. Also, the movie is sprinkled with subtle comic moments and nothing too forced. The cinematography is awesome and out of the world, it is definitely immersive for the audience which will further strengthen the later part of story-line which Walter experiences a change in his personality. All in all watch this movie, you will fall in love with travelling and adventure. It will lighten up your inner desires for wanderlust and will instigate you to pack your bags and go to some unknown place.
Hva vil folk si (2017)
A moving experience !
I had the chance of seeing this movie screening in Bergen, Norway in Bergen International Film Festival, on 2nd Oct 2017. I had seen the trailer before and went with a bit of expectation. The movie exceeded my expectations with much difference. The debutante Mariah Mozdah is phenomenal portraying the daughter of a Pakistani family settled in Norway. She is torn apart between to cultures, the socially progressive Norway life and also her traditional family at home. Adil Hussain portrays the role of a doting father who values the societal norms and acceptance of his community very much. All of his thoughts comes under fire when he finds his daughter's white boyfriend. He decides to send his daughter to Pakistan, to his relatives, to discipline her and teach her their culture. Both Mariah and Adil have invested a lot of efforts into their performance. And the direction by Iram Haq really forces us to question and protest all the societal norms that we fear and surrender ourselves to knowingly and unknowingly. A must watch.
Dangal (2016)
Great movie !!, but with some Bollywood-ish masala.
Dangal is a biography of former National Wrestling champion Mahavir Singh Phogat. The performance by Aamir Khan is stellar and also the actors portraying both Geeta & Babita ( both young and mature) are par beyond excellence. But this movie like any other typical Bollywood movie plays with true incidents to introduce emotional content for grasping audience. Many incidents portrayed are not true if the context of biography should be taken into account. Ex- the climax where Aamir's character is cunningly locked in a room by Coach Sodhi, which actually never happened. This movie is not only a great entertainer but also showcases how sports and athletics is suffering in India due to backward attitude. It also shows a great deal about women empowerment. I wouldn't say its the best performance of Aamir, but definitely one of his best.
A must watch for all.
Love (2015)
Best movie about love, lust and broken relationships till date.
The movie starts with love making straightaway, it definitely makes sure the audience is aware what they can expect from the rest of the story. It shows how 2 people. Alex and Murphy, both in search to do something meaningful in life meet fall in love, have a fleeting moment where they get to live their fantasies. The movie is a kind of storytelling of a bit older Alex , now entangled with family life, has a sporadic comeback of memories of his former love Electra. The moments they spent together, and how their fantasies ultimately led to their separation. This movie is a love-story, kind of , with all the materialistic, worldly pleasures, and emotions encompassing it. Worth a watch. And the sex is un-simulated, that is what makes the emotions raw, pure & undiluted. People calling it just another porno with story do no justice to this film.
