Megan Follows is the best
9 December 2006
I believe the Megan Follows production is surely the best of all the versions that have been produced... I saw the 1934 version with Tom Brown (wonderful actor) on TCM this morning. It was OK, but many things had been changed for some inexplicable reason!

However, the production with Megan Follows and Colleen Dewhurst does not suffer when brought to the screen. Being a mini-series it takes its time to show us the characters and all their quirks. In my opinion, no production can compare to the Megan Follows version. It's simply brilliant. All the actors embodied their roles to perfection.

I watched it over a Saturday and Sunday, 6 years ago, as there were at least 2 tapes and maybe more. Later on, I tried to read the books but after seeing Megan Follows, I just couldn't. Perhaps I am too old now...after all, they are children's books with all the fantasies woven in that children have.

I recommend this production to everyone--this movie will blow your socks off. Megan with her flaming and flowing hair is such a perfect Anne. I cannot explain how wonderful the actors are playing Marilla and Matthew. You just have to see it yourself.

A fine short film of the era
30 October 2006
The Flag, movie short, was shown at the end of another movie on TCM yesterday... I was about to erase the movie Hairspray when the music by Vivek Mandala made me stop and check out the movie.

I found the film very enjoyable and the music was nice. The music was updated just enough...

I have no problems with this movie!! Shorts like this are important because it shows the thinking of the American people at the time in a way a school book CANNOT! This one way to reach kids and make them realize people are so different now.

The thinking and moires of the time (1927) when this film was made. This is history at its best. We may not agree with the attitudes of 1927, or 1776, but its important to realize we have come very far in some ways, and not in others.

I thought referring to childbirth as the Shadow of the Valley was really funny and shows the thinking of the time. Even in 1927, they are not admitting a woman has sex and can get pregnant. But my greandmother has told me in those days having a baby was a very serious thing and many women died in childbirth. With no antibiotics or ether yet, childbirth was quite frightening.

Even tho were were in a war with them it was obivious from the movie that most of the officers on both sides had no stomach for fighting their countrymen, the British obviously are now our friends, and why shouldn't they be? After all, the country was founded by the British. Europeans came later.

I liked the music and for the time it was made, the color was great. I would give this film a big thumbs up. It ought to be shown every July 4th...

This is the solution to the enigma
8 October 2006
I am surprised that no one has commented on the fact that they were indeed at some point living in the same time line!!

1. he was able to see her at the train station and retrieve her book. 2. he went to a party at her house, danced with her and kissed her. Same time line!

so where does the timeline diverge? On Valentine;s Day 2006, he dies and time not only stops for him but he must go back in time to 2004...

does his love for Kate cause his spirit to remain earthbound and travel back to 2004 to communicate with her again and possibly undo his premature death?

I think that an author ought to know the solution for himself when he ends the book. Even if he never reveals it he needs to know what the solution is and not leave it up to readers to figure out.

Anyone can jumble up an novel with lots of confusing patterns, but if the author himself knows the solution, you get glimmers of it thru the story.

I am not sure this author knew what he wanted to say except that they loved each other and time had no meaning.

Fun quotes and trivia from the movie
12 August 2006
This movie was such a cult favorite in the 80s. Its meant to be taken tongue in cheek... It might be funny in spots but Buckaroo was never silly...Peter Weller played it for serious and that is what the kids loved. Here are some quotes--see if you remember any of these...

"Laugh while you can, monkey boy!"

"Evil, pure and simple--from the 8th dimension!"

"President's calling, Buckaroo." "President of what?"

"I don't care if you walked thru a mountain in Texas. This is New Jersey, and when you play in my joint, you're just another act."

"Buckaroo, somebody Shanghaied the professor!

"Oh! The deuce you say!"

"Look at this. What is this?" "It's your hand, Buckaroo."

"Hey, Man, nice jacket." unseen man talking to John Parker outside gate at Banzai Institute

"We will destroy your planet. End of discussion." "End of discussion—what discussion?"

"It's not Buckaroo Banzai per sé, Mr. President—It's his men—foreigners some of 'em!" "Give me 30 minutes and come in and mop up."

Secretary of Defense hands the President a booklet. It says on the front, "Declaration of War—the Short Form"

"Where are we going?" "Planet 10!" "When?" "Real Soon!"

"Shut up John Bigbootie, you are weakest individual I ever know!"

"Get away from that car or I'll drink your blood." 10 year-old Blue Ranger to the Secretary of Defense

"Buckaroo the President's on line one calling about, is everything OK with the Alien Space Craft from Planet 10 or should we just go ahead and destroy Russia?" "Tell him Yes on one and No on two." "Which was yes—to destroy Russia or number 2?"

Trivia: did anyone notice Mrs Johnson sucking on a Tootsie Pop, and Buckaroo takes it out of her hand and sticks it in his mouth and continues the scene sucking on the candy and using it as a prop?

Peter Weller's grin right before Perfect Tommy says "lets Rock and Roll" (when Hong Kong Cavaliers play at the club) What a smile. And to think Peter Weller was one of the very bad guys on 24 last season…

During the end credits, when they are all walking, Perfect Tommy has on his white jacket, then changes to a striped shirt and red pants during the last half of the walk. Anyone notice that?

Great movie
29 July 2006
This is an unbeatable movie! I saw it at the theater in 1997 along with about 7 other women...we all went to the theater alone because our hubbies refused to take us! Seriously...I did not know one single woman in the theater that day! We all loved the movie right off...

My sister bought it and we watched it with captioning, and boy had we missed a lot of lines at the theater and funny ones at that! You see with the English accents and all their slang-- you just can't understand a lot of what they are saying...

Watch this movie with and without the captioning! It's like watching a movie with English being your second language, and I B.S. you not!

The English working class has a different way of expressing themselves--its so charming and hilarious...

I think Robert Carlysle is brilliant "Gaz". I cannot think of anyone who could have done it better.

This movie cannot be beat! I bought it and recommend it to everyone!! Definitely a ten out of ten.

This movie is not very good
5 July 2006
Anyone can make a disjointed tale with blood, sex and drugs, that has no plot line, has a lot of inexplicable happenings and has no tie up at the end and we are supposed to think its really deep? Is that what passes for a psychological thriller now in 2006? Spare me. I watched the whole thing and I was bored silly. It wasn't even done well enough for me to want to know what the real story was.

There must be a sane starting point at either the beginning or end. it certainly won't be in the middle...Something to hang onto. This one did neither. Waste of time and I am not a kid with a short attention span.

However, The I Inside with Ryan Phillipe and Robert Sean Leonard is excellent and did make me think. Check it out.

Great movie
4 July 2006
We saw it today on July 4th and thought it was great.

Sad, happy, exciting, it had everything! Hooray for the red, white and blue.

I don't want to say too much... Its hard to talk about the plot without giving something away.

I say give it a 9 instead of a ten and Only because I wanted it to go on longer!

Can't wait for the inevitable sequel.I think they were so smart in casting this kid. He has got everything going for him. A calm voice and center, good lucks, and he is tall, quiet and very self-possessed. Where has he been anyway??? I mean, don't you just want to see them kiss???

great movie
28 December 2005
It was the year I started college and I saw this movie and just loved it! I had just gone off to be an adult and live in the dorm and planned to never be a child again! I saw this and missed my family so much. and I just loved Tim Matheson. He was already a cute guy by then and I really identified with his character's dismay at the thought that these 2 "older" people could actually fall in love at their age and make a baby together! My brother is 14 years younger than I am so I could relate to that scenario! The movie was not hokey at all the time although it may seem that way now. I really liked it because it was about love for family and true togetherness and two people who were trying really hard to be together and take care of everyone. I have not seen the new release, and don't plan to. some things should not be made over... To anyone who has not seen the original, please do. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Love This Movie!!
14 September 2003
I have always just loved this movie! I saw it as a teenager in the 60's, getting ready to go off to college and thought it was great fun at that time. Since I was a teenager, I remember really enjoying the character of Mike, played by Tim Matheson. I always thought he would go on to be a real big movie star instead of TV movies, since he had lots of charisma and maturity at that young age. However, he has done very well in the roles on television he has played and is always a real treat to watch. I don't think I thought Lucille Ball was too old the first time I saw it, because anyone over 25 seemed old to me at the time! I recently caught this movie on TV and enjoyed it again from an adult perspective. It was a little corny but still a good film. Life in the sixties even with Vietnam and all was a much more innocent time especially with what kids face today. I would give it a 100 just because it is so uplifting.

Seabiscuit (2003)
My favorite movie of the year
1 September 2003
After reading the book, I waited and waited for this movie. It was wonderful, even my 75 year old mother loved it. She said it reminded her so much of the depression days. I wanted the movie to have everything in it that the book did, but that was impossible. But I am not complaining, in fact I have seen it twice and cried both times. I have recommended it to Everyone I know. I think it deserves a nod for Jeff Bridges at Oscar time and and an Oscar for the movie itself.
