Last Flag Flying (2017)
Not my usual film, but I loved it!
This isn't the usual genre or speed of play I would usually look for in a film, but surprisingly I couldn't take my eyes off of it.
Steve Carrell and Bryan Cranston together, its what I always wanted in a film both lending to different styles and differently portrayed characters though both together made it a fantastic watch. Laurence Fishbourne's character also surprised me by adding a different edge to complete the trio. In this, 3 is not a crowd.
The story in general is sweet and simple, though the complexity comes through the dialogue. There isn't a ton of dramatization but this film doesn't need it, Linklater is able to showcase the story perfectly without.
You end up feeling incredibly aware of each character. You realise the bonds that the characters share and as the movie progresses you relish in the laughter and stories the characters are again able to reminisce with each other.
It's no secret the premise of the story is dark, though if anything, not that I have any experience in the armed forces, everyone can at some point relate to each character, where it be vices, nostalgia, great loss, friendship and humour.
Wakefield (2016)
I understand why most wouldn't like this film... but...
It's easy to slate the film, especially if you're one to primarily focus on mob, gangster, shooters, action, fast paced genres.
Bryan Cranston is not Walter white in this story, not too far from it, but still not, nonetheless.
Cinematography and individual performances are the thing to look out for in this one. Bryan is fantastic, as usual, and if you can look past that the majority of the movie is set in one room, you might get to understand the dynamic of his performance.
On that note, the dialogue is almost akin to Shakespeare, incredibly poetic, mysterious, but not misguiding.
To end on, I again understand why those who watched this disliked the ending, but I believe it to be the opposite. There is no doubt you were not wondering what you would've done in that situation. I believe it made you, decide what was to unfold. Similarity in pulp fiction with the briefcase, you never know what's in it, but, Tarantino did once say, it was what ever you wanted it to be.
Mike Bassett: England Manager (2001)
Film Length
Always remembered this as being a short film when I was younger, disappointed due to getting to love Mike basset as a character as he progresses from the bumbling buffoon he once was.
But, i just noticed the run time is 90mins... football game period! Haha that must've been a sneaky tongue in cheek nod
