Mr. Lucky (1943)
Effective change of pace
5 November 2005
Atypical Cary Grant film starts out with dark tone.Movie also has the theme of the responsibility of serving during wartime.;this is pieced together with the familiar gambler trying to fleece beautiful woman plot device. It makes for a very good film despite going back and forth. There is some role reversal as Grant rejects the girl, played by Laraine Day, because he thinks she is only interested in him for his money instead of the other way around.Day does very well in Myrna Loy.,Irene Dunne type role.Film features some dialogue written in the form of made up words, the combination of two regular words.Film is somewhat similar to Grant's "None but the lonely heart".

The Haunting (1963)
Where does this rank as a ghost movie?T
13 March 2005
This picture gets off to a fine start with three consecutive scenes depicting the history of Hill House. It then focuses on the Julie Harris character delving into her character's tragic background;the circumstances are somewhat questionable. However two good things come of this. Her character is drawn toward the house instead of away from it.Also, the dramatic end to the picture is a notable aspect of the picture.Along the way the film becomes talky, although the talk is about the paranormal. The talk takes away from the amount of chills;there aren't as many as I expected. This picture is at least as good as some of the other oldies, like "The Uninvited" but maybe falls short of "The Innocents."

"Why is this mystery different?
21 February 2005
This movie distinguishes itself with the way the murders are filmed. The position of the hands and the leering eye give this film a different look. Also, this picture is dominated by Dorothy McGuire as the mute heroine. It is also worth mentioning that the previously invalid Ethel Barrymore character plays a key role in the climax, which takes place on "The Spiral Staircase" of the title. This is the only point in the picture the staircase proves to be important. The movie also has a killer one wouldn't think did it based on everything that came before. To sum up this isn't great movie but these are some of the things that separates it from others of this type & worth viewing.

Hollywood v.s the Nazis
13 November 2004
While this subject was handled in other films,in this one a good part of the action [particularly the climax]takes places inside the house. This enables the movie from being more than just a"Nazi-hunting" movie. It shows the effect on the family. It also provides for some of the films better moments as Lukas 'character has to explain what he has done ,what he has to do and why he must do what he is about to do.The same can be said of Davis'character as she explains her devotion to his cause. This has started to destroy her family and she realizes that this will continue as her sons take up the cause.Fine acting by the two leads.Film made me think of "The Mortal Storm"."Criss-cross" is another good film on the subject which ,like "The Mortal Storm deals more with anti-semitism.

Interesting cast of characters=interesting film
7 August 2004
Although the dinner doesn't actually take place[it's about to start when the movie ends;maybe one of the films best jokes or ironies],the business leading up to it is well worth it.There is a lot of character exploration and assassination which composes much of the action of the film. This film is much more drama than comedy. I usually talk about other things when telling what Ilike about movies but Iliked this. This film is better than "Grand Hotel". It is put together better and has an excellent screenplay making for amore interesting film. Also possibly one of it's best jokes or ironies is that the many characters appear in groups;[because of ego?} they don't all appear together until the end.Marie Dressler has some of the best lines;Of course, the last one "Reading a book, that's something you need not worry about.

One for the ages
15 March 2004
There is so much emotion invested in this movie,it is one of those movies that will stay with me.It doesn't only affect me in a positive way,as for most of the film I am NOT hoping Heathcliff and Cathy get together. At the same time there is a good aspect to this as this is not a formula romance. It takes romance to a new level, one I had never seen before in a film.Heathcliff &Cathy have all these barriers thanks to her. Yet somehow they're together at the end. Do they really belong that way? I'm satisfied with the ending.

Touch of Evil (1958)
Classic Film Noir
25 December 2003
This picture takes the hero and embroils him nonstop into a series of predicaments. Needless to say, this made for a very entertaining movie. It certainly belongs at the top of the film noir list.It reminded me of a Hitchcock film in that respect.

Moulin Rouge (1952)
Absorbing biography
27 November 2003
Compelling story describing the type of life Toulouse-Lautrec had.The picture keeps you involved throughout;however, it is not a happy story. You're hoping for him to have a decent relationship and the desired happy ending. At the same time you're looking for realism and the picture's ending appears to be the proper one.Overall, a recommended look at a famous person's real life.(At least he got to enjoy some degree of recognition and high regard for his work).

Excellent sports movie
8 November 2003
Picture is more about the people than the sport. At first you don't like the main character and this is not a good thing. That begins to change in the latter part of the film and by the end you are happy to see things finally work out for him.I wouldn't be surprised if Stallone used this as an inspiration for his"Rocky" movie.Non-stop plot changes culminate in Graziano's (Newman's) change of character.Angeli provides a great presence;reminds me of an Italian Audrey Hepburn.
