Tulsa King: Happy Trails (2023)
Definitely a thumbs way, way up!
Best new show! Thank you Paramount, for this gem. I held off and watched the entire first season in early April and highly recommend viewing it as a weekend binge! There are very compelling, interesting characters and a well-written story. Great cast, every one of them memorable and well cast.
About Stallone: The man definitely has a commanding presence. He plays an determined, unyielding man of character, generous to his friends and loyal to those where loyalty is due. His realization that he had wasted much of his life, his desire to reconcile with his daughter and his efforts to rebuild his life was the crucial theme of the story. I enjoyed seeing him so well dressed in every episode - certainly a man of means! As a 71-year-old myself, I marvel at his stamina and energy and have to admit I find him even more attractive now than when he was younger. He still has it!
;-)
There is considerable violence and I wouldn't recommend the show for young children but it has its place in this story and isn't overdone.
Can't wait for Season 2!
What Happened to Monday (2017)
Wow! Surprising Netflix film, I liked it!
Ignore the poor reviews. This sci-fi thriller is action packed, violent and bloody, all the while a fresh albiet chilling statement on the planet's current and future overpopulation. Noomi Rapace mesmorizes me - the slightest facial movement conveys volumes, all the while being understated, not overacted. Plus, the woman is fit and can fight! I was skeptical anyone could believably portray seven different personalities, but she really pulled it off; she sheds characters like other actresses change shoes. Marwan Kenzari is eye-candy, and Glenn Close and Willem Dafoe strong supporting cast. If you're a fan of this genre, and Ms. Rapace, don't miss this Netflix hidden gem!
Ordinary Joe (2021)
Please help: re Jenny!
Help! Is it the same ADA Jenny in both the lives of Cop Joe & Singer Joe? There are three for Joe, of course, and three for Amy (campaign worker, Congressional candidate & Eric's wife), but I can only name two for Jenny: Nurse Joe's paralegal wife and Singer Joe's ADA, long blonde hair, married with twins. What did the other Jenny do about the baby? Is she the same ADA in both the lives of Cop Joe & Singer Joe? What have I missed? I did totally miss that the different stories are color-coded... duh!
Comments in a review written by atlasmb dated 9/21/21 noted that "one story can inform another storyline, providing background information that the characters may not be aware of in their realities." What?! Did anyone else catch that, or remember specific examples of it? Maybe the information was so well integrated with the story that I didn't notice because it was seamless.
I like the show's premise and the actors and would like to give it a higher rating if the writing was less confusing. Because it takes some effort to watch (i.e., most people don't invest much effort), and more importantly, based on NBC's track record for canceling new programming, I'm leery to become too attached. If you've read this far, yay, thanks, and if you reply, thanks even more!
Evil (2019)
Am I the only one who's noticed the rewrites?
Didn't anyone watch this show the first year when it was on network CBS? The writers have almost completely redone this show to move it in a different direction - where are the scenes of Kristen's husband's return and his romantic gifting of the opportunity for Kristen to lead a team to Everest? What about all of the times Grandma came over and the interactions with the girls? Or of Leland getting to know the mother - there were many scenes of their budding romance which are gone. Kristen killing LaRue? Come on... I don't remember what happened to him in the first year, but there is never a hint Kristen would take steps to physically stop him. What about David's father and the scenes at the "ranch" when they were doing the psychedelic drug and the physical attraction between David and Kristen? The story didn't just pick up where the first year left off, it is being rewritten - some of the scenes have been used but much has been omitted, and much has been reshot and rewritten to support a new story. For example, the fertility clinic is a new aspect and Kristen's daughter having been conceived there is a completely new addition to the story. Didn't anyone watch the first year and notice the changes? I suppose if I'I'md watched only the shows on Paramount I'd have a different opinion but I'm having trouble reconciling the timeline of the story. I didn't anticipate a rewrite.
Wild Mountain Thyme (2020)
I really, really liked this movie...
(just maybe a slight spoiler, last paragraph)
... the characters, the story, the setting, the cast - all were beautiful, believable and enjoyable. I don't understand the bad reviews. Jamie Doran and Emily Blunt's chemistry was adorable, he played the shy, introverted guy so well you'd never believe he also did Fifty Shades of Gray, and Emily Blunt was sweet, and funny ! Her portrayal as a frustrated but hopeful modern single woman was strong, I like that she spoke her mind.
There was a lot of humor in this movie, and Christopher Walken played a strong supporting role as Anthony's 'Da'. One of the most enjoyable scenes was when Rosemary cornered Anthony in her kitchen during the rainstorm and opened her heart to him, I can easily see that this movie was born as a play. Too bad it was released at the height of the Covid epidemic and America's political problems, Dec. 2020, it definitely fell through the cracks, more like a chasm.
I wish there were more movies like this.
Secret Obsession (2019)
Ah, come on everyone!
This movie is NOT as bad as the many, many reviews of 3 or less listed here claim! It deserves at least another star for the final 30 minutes of suspense, and maybe another star for Brenda Song hip hopping around like a bird for at least half of the movie! (She even had her arms flapping sometimes, lol, I wonder if she was sore after doing that!)
BUT, as rhiannajohnson89, a 10-star-reviewer, points out: Obsession deliberately sets out as a spoof from the very beginning with the windshield wipers... In fact, it isn't until the movie wraps up with so many unsolved questions that you realize how much you've been led down a rabbit hole! I refuse to believe that a company like Netflix would invest in a script such as this from a writer unless they acknowledged the plot holes were deliberate!
So, yes, sit back with that popcorn and enjoy! Then, when it's over, you can laugh about the labsurdity! You certainly will remember this movie for a long while!
Batwoman (2019)
OMG! So if you all hate it so much...
Wow, you all are way negative about EVERYTHING about this show. At least give it a chance, for heaven's sake.
Let's see where it's going. ..
Triple Frontier (2019)
Yes, and no.
Great soundtrack, cinematography and set design... but too many holes in the story. Acting was fine. The first half was suspenseful but their plan to get themselves and the money out of the country was illogical! Could've been a really good movie if the writing and dialogue had had more attention. TV shows like SEALTeam and SWAT are spoiling us with well written tactical manuevers.
