The Northman (2022)
The movie sucks, really
I consider myself an open minded person when it comes to movies. But this one just sucks. It's predictable, unoriginal, pointless, boring, just crappy. A crappy movie trying to justify its existence behind good actors (most of which don't actually play an important role) and a confusing, deliberate plot with many non-given explanations. It's the kind of movie you would find on a national TV channel on Sunday 10pm with translated voices. Just awful.
I am amazed that the direction and screenplay
are so bad, and the lack of originality and thought behind it. The kind of movie that would be considered a great idea if envisaged by an 11 year old.
Chicuarotes (2019)
THE MOVIE IS BASED ON A METAPHOR (AXOLOTLS - SALAMANDERS)
Skimming through the reviews, I noticed that a common critic consists on portraying the characters as "too dumb". Unfortunately, the representation is accurate and many people in CDMX (as in any city in which ignorance and poverty prevail) do think in such primary ways. The movie is built on a metaphor: axolotls ("water monster" in nahuatl, prehispanic tongue) which are salamanders endemic to CDMX that never fully develop and remain tadpoles, even as adults, for the rest of their lives. Axolotls are often seen throughout the movie: (a) inside the fishbowl of the main character's (Cagalera) girlfriend, and (b) outside the canteen, as graphity, before Cagalera enters the canteen and is beaten by his "dad". Some say we Mexicans are like axolotls: we have the potential to develop and finally mature as a nation, but never achieve to do so. Just like axolotls, we perpetually stay behind our true potential. We are no more than perpetual tadpoles. The movie tries to address this issue. As long as ignorance, violence, retaliation, machismo, homophobia, and similar problems portrayed in the movie prevail, no progress will be ever achieved.

The Good and The Bad
The movie has amazing aspects, and others that are not so good.
The good.- the portrayal of the Italian countryside is amazing, really natural and very calm. Probably the best aspect of the movie. The actors are also great and the viewer gets a sensation of ease from the combination created by the genuine atmosphere and natural acting throughout the movie.
The bad.- my main complaint relies in the plotline and character development. There are certain things I just don't buy. Just to clarify, this has nothing to do with the fact of the couple being homosexual, it could apply to any couple in general. As for the plotline I hated the fact that Elio and Oliver fell in love as I found abusive for a male adult to breach the trust of the Professor and getting into the pants of his underage son who is side by side to his bedroom. Surprisingly, the Professor is extremely comfortable and happy with this. Again, this could perfectly apply if Elio was a girl or viceversa, it just doesn't work.
As for the character development, I find it hardly credible for an academic philosopher seeking the meaning of life throughout his stay in the countryside, to be so extrovert and calm to the point of playing poker and speaking italian with locals, dancing to hit songs and getting immediately laid, being a perfect athlete, and all this while having time of concluding a complex philosophical investigation of Heraclitus (which is not sufficiently depicted in the movie) and getting the son of its Mentor (i.e. Elio) laid. Again, it just doesn't work.
The script was more focused on depicting and idilic homosexual couple rather than constructing a convincing plotline and thus feels like a desperate message rather than a credible story towards the road of acceptance of couple diversity.
