The Tree of Life (2011)
Don't do it!
Just goes to show... You CAN polish a turd! This was a beautifully shot piece of crap. They hijacked David Attenborough's film crew... interwoven with less than gripping drama about a boy's upbringing and a couple of shots of Sean Penn for validity. The music for the most part is over bearing and seemingly present because of the lack of power that the movie itself generates. I can only cringe to guess what the budget was and how much better it could have been spent. I heard that Heath Ledger was the first choice for this film and if you wanna look for positives in a sad situation then it must be said that him dying before being linked to this film is one. The only thing good I can say is that the acting is bearable which is maybe a forgone conclusion considering the on screen talent but the young boys were pretty good and that's it!
Melancholia (2011)
Earth Shattering!
I do like Lar's von Trier's unique take on film and life in general, however, I also understand why others might not. But this is a film where he invites everyone to the party. Albeit an ostentatious wedding party that is undermined by a bipolar bride who infects her loved ones and the viewer but sucks us in all the same and then flips us on our heads by validating depression in the most beautiful way. What this is is a great apocalyptic film which explores humanity like no other 'end of the world' film has ever actually done which is surprising considering the amount of those films out there. Say what you want about this guy, he has his finger on YOUR pulse.
His film's know us. You can't hide.
Oranges and Sunshine (2010)
Something missing.
I would like to read the book as it take two people to make a baby and there is absolutely no mention of fathers in the whole film (except the priests). The assumption is that because the kids came from hard backgrounds then the father was not present but the main cry from these people is that they wanted to 'know who they are'. Then give up after they find out that the mother is dead. Maybe the format was not enough to cover that. Still, not one mention of a father in the whole film. Hard to enjoy a film when you keep asking the same question through the whole viewing and it doesn't address it at all. Would have preferred more of a documentary than a story as it is an interesting topic and the conflicts of a successful story line sometimes has to omit larger truths.
In Her Skin (2009)
Uneven
Iv just read the other reviews for this film and I am left wandering if it was the same film we are watching. The review by SEPIAL forces me to lean towards that feeling that I get more and more from some of the reviews on IMDb that...it is actually the film's director reviewing this film ( or someone who had something to do with the film). If that is the case then here is a tip: Don't make excuses for your work or try and talk us through it, that just tells the vultures where to circle.
As far as the film is concerned, on paper it looked good. Love the actors. Don't know what they were doing in this. Well, maybe I do. Again, on paper it must have looked good for an actor, something to sink your teeth into. The issues are all serious and dark and the ingredients are all there. But the biggest problem that i can put my finger on is that it can't seem to make it's mind whether it is a realistic, gritty drama or a surreal poke at dark emotions and although there is space there for both the mix just doesn't feel right. It sucked. Sorry, I probably would have given it a better review if the actors were not so big and I only expected the little that I got.
