The Stu Erwin Show (1950)
New 6 episode DVD
It is digitally remastered which accounts for how good it looks. It is out on DVD under "Trouble with Father". 9 years later Sheila Kuehl went on to the "Dobie Gillis" show. The dialog moves pretty fast compared to an old Burns & Allen show. The show was called "Life with the Erwins" originally. Funny thing is I never heard of Stu Erwin before I saw this DVD set. The first episode is about some ugly furniture. Most of the show deals with pricing. Selling furniture for $2; spending $20. For today's value you can multiply all prices by about 10. So if he spends $20 it is really $200. When he says he saved over $400, it would be about $4,000 today.
The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001)
The dialog was all wrong
The reason the movie went awry was that only Charlize said any of the 1940s lingo such as "gumshoe"; that kept a movie like this flowing. See "My Girl Friday" for an example of fast talk. Near the end someone said "thunk". All the dialog sounded like 1990. The writer and director really are at fault with the way this movie played out. Bob Hope would have spoken faster than Woody did. And Charlize getting into his bed isn't even believable in the least. I'm still not sure why Helen Hunt was in the office late each night. This would have been better filmed in the "Film Noir" style of mostly night shooting. It was worth watching once.
Dancing Pirate (1936)
New DVD is out
The DVD is in B & W. Remastered but lacks any depth --- still looks old. Set in the 1800s the "Dance Master" does a lot of 1930 style tap dancing. Frank Morgan is funny but the rest is almost a waste of time. The whole problem with the culture and his teaching WALTZ dancing was how putting his right hand on the lady was an offense. I can't tell if this was for the 1936 audience or part of the 1800s culture. A few times a Mexican band played a few bars of Malaguena and then mixed it in with some other music style. Plot holes--The main character was kidnapped and forced to work on a pirate ship. Then he is let loose on land-the map shows LOS ANGELES; but he is clearly in Mexico... The map shows California is a state although in the 1800s; I believe the map is wrong for that era. Then when he is walking into town; the pirate ship leaves him--there is no explanation at all....
Die unendliche Geschichte III: Rettung aus Phantasien (1994)
This movie ended the series
Warning--may contain spoiler:
I was surprised at quality of the rubber trees and the rock eater costumes. But after seeing the pink dog puppet covered in fake fur---I shouldn't be.
This movie seemed to be a combination of school, mall shopping, and some strange Fantasia world all combined into one senseless movie. When Nicole goes shopping---it must have been a whole couple of minutes total--and seemed like an MTV fashion show segment. In fact most scenes seemed thrown together without any regard of continuity or logic.
The father was insipid. Because his 2 kids run up to him---he decides to stay....there was no explanation. Couldn't tell why he was leaving in the first place.
