An attempt at morality and drama so bad it's almost laughable
19 June 2024
I just could not stop watching because in got intrigued by how the creators of this movie attempted again and again, in almost literally every scene, to invoke a sense of tension, drama and finger-pointing life-lessons by just piling up cliché characters with a shallow storyline, over-acting characters and - what I thought was most annoying of all - continuous dramatic music.

Even if there is not tension whatsoever in a scene, the music will built up, increase in tension to reach avclimax while the script/scene does not deliver any drama or tension. It's literally exhausting because the brain gets mixed signals all the time. By the second part of the movie, you will just start ignoring the music alltogether because it's so out-of-sync that it's not credible anymore. A bit like a child who always makes jokes about being hurt, and then when actually gets hurt nobody reactis anymore.

I always do try to watch these kinds of movies till the end because it usually makes me appreciate the next movie I watch so much more LOL.

Twice in a lifetime?

Ok, let me be clear: I'm not comparing actors, cinematography, script etc. That would be impossible and foolish. But when it comes to the overall impression, evaluation, feeling that I was left with after watching Ripley, I can subjectively say that only 'Dexter' is in the same league.

Words that pop into mind include art, pure, contrast, smile, dark, sophistication, psychology, perspective, tension, romance, charm, obsession, beauty, captivating, to name but a few.

So over the years this is only the second time I've experienced this. I hope there will be a third. When it happens, I'll let you know.

Great story, annoying sound/music/effects
1 January 2024
Captivating and intriguing storyline. Good acting, too. Easy to watch.

The only two things that reallly got on my nerves already after watching 2 episodes are the music and sound effects. Somehow the producer thought is was necessary to add an extra level of suspense/tension to every single scene by using dramatic music. Even if the scene is not dramatic. This way the music loses its added value and to be honest it's a kind of insult to the storyline. It doesn't need this suspense-building effects. Only here and there, where appropriate. Not everywhere.

Some sound effects are also annoying, like the 'accelerating car' effect that sounds like a Porsche but is used everytime a car (not being a Porsche) is accelerating or driving away from a traffic light. The exact same sound.

Beyond expectations

What a killer show. I loved the thrilling storyline, covert ops and great cast but it was the character development that really got me hooked. Moral and ethical dilemmas, personal vs public gain shifting perspectives on mission objectives. Really intense.

The only thing that withheld me from rating it 10/10 was the 'family' storyline, It seemed a bit of an obligated 'extra', not really adding much value to the overall experience. In my opinion it could better be either left out entirely of have more integration with the main storyline. For instance, if one of the grandchildren would have attended the same school in the US as the daughter did, and unraveling from thereon.

But still, I totally loved it and hope there wiill be next seasons!!!
