The Big Short (2015)
6/10
No so good on the rewatch
11 September 2023
This movie does a great job at taking a big, complicated, and very boring financial plot and making it flashy and easy to understand. The first time watching this movie feels like and experience. Part documentary, part PSA, and part crime drama. Like a lot of classic Scorsese movies, we follow the actions of self serving, villain characters as they unveil their master plan and slowly come to terms with who they are.

However, the characters in this movie are pretty one dimensional caricatures, where the actors were focused more on a physical or behavioral gimmick than portraying the real human emotions involved in this situation. When the plot and informative nature of this movie is stripped away, you're just left with star power phoning it in.

In hindsight we've seen this movie again from Adam McKay in Don't Look Up. A movie that is full of slightly interesting characters that all make up a piece of a bigger jigsaw puzzle. And rewatching this movie is like trying to build a puzzle I've already completed before. It's no fun.

Bass Ackwards

The original show was all about being one's self despite any adversity. The new show is all about how the wealthy are beloved and their egos shall be excused. Both are super corny, but the old show at least embraced it and used it to generate lovable characters. The new show is presented as if it's completely unaware of how unintentionally funny it is and gives the vibe that it doesn't want to be funny. Beyond that every single character arc is dramatic and ultimately boring. Every single character in the Banks house has a somber music background moment where they break down and confess what's really going on with them. This contributes to a lot of rushed and incoherent plot lines that don't have the emotional payoff that any one moment would have in isolation. Overall, it's a show to put on when there's nothing else to do, laugh at how seriously it takes it's self and feel the second hand embarrassment when it thinks you're crying. The comparison of the old show to this one just shows how much Will Smith changed.

Really? This wasn't a Harvey Weinstein movie?

This is a movie that is very clearly made by a middle age man stuck with the mind of a teenager. The racism, misogyny, and sexualization of every other character is supposed to be satirical, I presume, but it has no reasoning other than this is the 70s. But it's not the 70s, it's the Hollywood caricature of the 70s that we've become all too familiar with as a cheap ploy for bypass the standards of today.

Beyond that the story here is all over the place, jumping from one idea to another at a rapid fire pace. This feels more like a community theater improv course rather than a fully thought out production. An hour in and not a single character has been fleshed out, most have barely been given screen time, and it's easy to tell that they're doomed to remain static, almost mysterious figures without motivation. The vibe is trying to be that of a coming of age movie, but not a single character feels like they're a real person. Also a 25 year old adult is not a child, they have a fully developed brain and it feels gross to lump them in with teenager and say it's a coming of age story. 0/10 Hollywood at its worst.

Halo (2022– )

Halo is full of holes
23 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I like a good reimagining but it has to have some sort of direction. This show has no idea what it wants to be, all looks and no substance. The first few episodes introduced some ideas that were wildly different from the source material, but showed promise to be an entertaining retelling of the story. However by the end, can we even call this Halo? The Fall of Reach has been omitted, High Charity was already infiltrated, Tartarus has been replaced with Atriox, but that doesn't matter because the show can't decide if the real villain is Halsey or the UNSC! Plus the biggest change of all being Masterchief is an emotional heart throb instead of a burdened super weapon, it's just not the same story. It looked cool though, so 3 stars.

Bad Vegan? Just Bad TV.

This is just a show about how naive and stupid people are and I feel like the audience is just left feeling the same way. There's no plot here, there's no payoff, nothing. Just an empty worthless show.

Overstuffed with nothing at all
17 December 2021
This movie is trying to tell a trilogy worth of stories in just 2 hours and with a half hour dedicated to just prologue, this movie just falls short of the epic that it seems like it was meant to be. It rushes so quickly through the story, that the human characters have to be hopelessly absent minded in order for the conflict to kick off. Even my 4 and 7 year old niece and nephew questioned the gaping plot holes and got bored with the movie before the dragon even showed up. The dragon btw seems to be a tired cliche. The dragon feels like all the bad Marvel jokes put into one character. And lastly the animation only seems to shine in the dystopian world but looks rubbery when scenes take place away from dust. Overall, I'm very disappointed with this movie. Great concept with horrible execution. It looks like people worked really hard on it but the script ultimately let them down in the end.

Cowboy Bebop (2021)

Haters gonna hate
6 December 2021
This is easily the best live action interpretation of an anime that has been made. It takes the original, action packed anime expands on it in every way. Instead of being episodic, it's serialized. Instead of insinuating to backstory, it shows it. And instead of clunky English translations, it's performed in English. The casting is great Cho does a perfect job at capturing the troubled but nonchalant Spike, Shakir pull of a great impression of the original English dubbed Jet while also being the father figure of the ship. And Penida does a great job as Faye, who I'll remind people has come out of cryo sleep with no memory, for her to immediately be a badass femme fatale would be jarring, the original anime realized that, but fans forgot. So called fans would like to pick every little thing apart rather than basking in the glow of Bebop being relevant again.

People love to hate
5 December 2021
Cowboy Bebop is one of the coolest anime's ever made, the live action remake doesn't disappoint, while also not ripping off its predecessor. Both versions exist while not taking anything but story inspiration for each other. The live action version add depth to the story of the original while also creating its own aesthetic. The casting is perfect, the effects are amazing, and the writing is finally clever instead of a clunky English translation.
