The worst
29 March 2024
Terrible script and story. Actors have no chemistry. I did not believe the couple one moment were into each other as intensely as the dialogue and situation asserts. I can see they were putting all they could into it, but something feels off.

Was there any director? The camera does nothing to accentuate the scenes at all. Point and shoot is what it feels like. Sets are uninspired. CGI automatically drops a movie's believability, so you'd better have the money to make it work well for you.

As a whole, it feels like a fan-made movie and true to form, most fan-made films miss the inspiration that created the original and end up focusing on what they think are the sensational parts. So, the movies are just how to get the characters in line for the kill. Shallow, boring shots, unnecessary dialogue and the creepers 'waking' up sequence? We could definitely have done without that. The mystery of where it goes, hibernates and wakes are a terrifying thought which has been ruined by this movie. Also, to show any creature having a cult and ritualized summoning places it under the control of it's prey=not scary. Especially when the ones summoning are usually lame character types. I cannot think of any movie where they are as scary as the thing called, and if there is one, I'd bet their storylines were done so well that it was deserving. Here, it comes off a lazy and non-creative.

A deep dive into the original should be enough to get a feel for what Salva's original though was for the Creeper. Not even two or 3 were as mind warping as the first.

This movie literally is like a copy of a copy of a copy making it thin, faded and something given with the understanding "it's not directly related, but you kinda can see where it came from".

Bad Influence (2022)
5/10
Not related to the James Spader/ Rob Lowe Bad Influence
21 September 2022
Title tells it. A teenager becomes influenced to behave negatively towards her mother due to a new friend in her new school. The single mother takes notice of this change in her benevolent daughter and investigates this new girl that has aggressively befriended her and what she discovers shocks her to the core.

The script is not the best and the acting falls easily into a Hallmark show.. I personally am always happy to see Jeannie Garth in things. She always commits and it shows. She is easily the best in the character department, however, there isn't a lot given to work with, depth wise. It is an easy watch and perhaps if you've teenagers that are easily swayed by others to behave foolishly, this movie will serve as a "see what can happen if you do not think for yourself?" and " Bad company corrupts good morals".

Worst of 3
14 June 2022
Boring. Drab color scheme. Awful CGI. Terrible dialog and script. Acting is as good as the dialog. With so many decent movies to make, why make 3 when the first "remake" was at least decent. This is amateurish and insulting. A waste of time and money.

Do better. I finish everything. I did not finish this. It broke my stride.

Not a fan of the Manga art
10 February 2022
Though I enjoyed the story and the voice actors. For me,much of it was undermined by the Manga styled art. It made everything seem too obvious and "cutesy". Some serious and snarky moments were lost to the oversized doll eyes. Not to mention what it made sexy-flirt moments look like. I'm at a loss for who the target audience was to be. Teens may totally be into it I guess. There's plenty of Manga fantasy abounding for such titillation. I did enjoy the voice actors though.

A funny series spoof of the missing woman dramas!
29 January 2022
It is exactly what you'd expect making fun of these types of movies! Funny to just roll with the story that has been told many many many times over with the character types found in all of these stories. Bell with all the others are funny being these versions.

Do not get put off by the negative comments from viewers completely missing the humor and non seriousness of it all. Think a series in the vein of the Scary Movie/Airplane/Epic Movie but a bit matured (and less annoying for me)by the writers, actors and source material. It's very good!!

Better done with that Twilight Zone episode
24 December 2021
Too long, too still, too monotone. These things need to be measured and have a tempo. Questions needed to be asked that these characters don't. How, why, what led him to this conclusion. He explains this to his own satisfaction, but certainly that shouldn't be enough to the others. Unplugged Tv and telephone ringing could have definitely been used as forces of interruption and movement of the main character, but wasn't enough.

With the calm dialog and quietness set to create a mood of a possible evil held below or sensitive insanity, there needs to be something that moves us along. It was like walking into a quiet house, having a quiet conversation, having a drink waiting for something to happen in a dimly lit place. Could be much better.

So bad....It hurts
19 September 2021
I can't blame the actors. The dialog, the script was terrible. Editing, terrible. Music terrible. It was like it belonged to a different show or movie. Over dramatic. Just weird choices.

The director... come on. The camera did NOTHING to add to the suspense and drama. Just pointed and shot. It was like a college first try.

The actors deliver lines like a table read. That is by the allowance or guidance of the director.

What a shame with so of these known actors in such a bad movie. If you make it to the end, you'll be confused by the choices. Smh Bad director, bad writer. Don't blame the actors (fully). They couldn't have saved it unless they changed it ALL.

A different kind of Dark Comedy
7 July 2021
A very different way to tell a story! It's a drama with sit-com inserts versions, that lighten.

A young woman that desires much more out of her life, struggles to escape her obnoxious husband and his bro-club buddies.

Everyone has a part to play. The neighbor, old boyfriend... it's very creative and funny in the absurdity of the situations she gets herself into trying to get out. (Kinda Lucy-esque) It is divided by us seeing her life through a sitcom lense vs. The truth of her actual life.

Imagine shows like I Love Lucy, King of Queens or Married With Children with an "real" actual version being told with it.

Stunning, Dark and Moody and I liked it!
4 June 2021
A little bit Bliss(Selma Hayek), The Wave (Justin Long) by way of Jacob's Ladder. A young man's grief, guilt and loss drive this movie as he finds his way through it. We go with him through psychedelic experiences.

Nightmarish, it is filled with flash backward, forward, sideways, flicker, cross-cuts all done to visually show the mental, emotional, fracturing. It's what is happening in his mind and minds eye.

Dylan does a marvelous job delivering what must have been quite an emotionally heavy performance. With the actress from IT FOLLOWS, together they deliver a dark, gritty and moving story.

To move forward, sometimes you have to remember, accept, forgive and let go. Only then can freedom be gained.

No doubt, it will confuse the masses as the deeper intricate stories do. But for those that don't mind traveling down the rabbit hole to exit the other side, (Donnie Darko *Director's Cut*, The OA, The Butterfly Effect *Director's Cut*) you'll find it compelling.

A Horror Dark Comedy and one of my favorites
3 June 2021
The teenage mode of relationships, exploration, curiosity, identity, stranger dangers and mental health are all presented in with the guise of supernatural happenings. Witty, funny in its deliveries which feel somehow light-hearted yet leading to serious consequences and situations.

Being a teenager can feel like being in "Hell" and this movie gives aspects of it.

Don't watch expecting to be scared like The Exorcist and don't expect a "Not Another Teen Movie" type of funny. It's a clever kind of funny within the characters situational absurdity. Intelligent.

There are layers in Cody's story that I've found in rewatching. The acting and directing, as well as, the cast chosen to fit the characters are well done.

STILL ONE OF MY FAVORITES!
17 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this movie when I was a teenager and it has always affected my view of behavior when trouble suddenly spikes in any particular city or state. This movie is written, directed and acted very well. Though it's been said that it is the other side of The Body Snatchers, this movie isn't so much on sci-fi end. It is of the earth and the likely hood of the source could be a real thing (and may have been, somewhere already) It is creepy and disturbing and stands up to time.

Opera (2020)

Subtle brilliant intellectual display
19 April 2021
Opera - a drama set to music; consists of singing with orchestral accompaniment and an orchestral overture and interludes The instruments and music are the "lives" we see in action. Moving, connecting, intersecting. In their expressions, how it all varies as it becomes more is likened to an opera of life. The big, small, rise and fall, good, bad and pauses. Creatively done. "Let the curtain rise and the orchestra begins "

A mix of Rhythm and Biography
15 April 2021
The movie hits on the cornerstones of Billie's life. The message and force her song Strange Fruit is the road it drives. There are some creative choices artfully done to get the viewer from chapter to chapter. With fictional elaboration on some things, we do get the "heart" of the expression. Some viewers just want the dry facts. This movie offers more than that. If you just roll with it without demanding less, you'll see a creative expression.

US voice over is terrible. Use original and subtitles
28 March 2021
It is honestly baffling how the US voice overs are always mind-boggling awful. There are myriads of animations that are marvelous, but live action can't get it right? The young daughter sounds like a 25 year old woman doing baby talk. Hearing this 25 year old voicing a child saying "Daddy" in faux little girl voice is.....not for THIS kind of movie. The adults all sound like they're making a different kind of movie or like you can practically see the script they are reading. Vocal coaching and proper EQ-ing would be transformative. As it stands, it makes it a comedy. (Coincidentally a character literally just said "is this some kind of joke" Lol it definitely sounds like one)

An odd and hypnotizing movie
19 March 2021
It captures you from it's start. It's a horror psychological movie that is...unusual. It's production value is well done and considering the ages of the actors, the lines they deliver are strange sounding sometimes, oddly paced, all plays into it. A bit Psycho, Sleep-Away Camp, Heathers add a Holocaust ghost story and you have a very unusual movie.

A really good and creepy show
9 March 2021
It's all well done. The figuring out what's happened, why it's happening, is it the end or the beginning, will there be more, is it happening everywhere?? The lives of all unravel some gracefully, some violently. I thoroughly enjoyed this show. It does invoke some internal inspection of behavior and fears so, many do not like that. I expect that negative reviews are from those that don't like to do that or find any movie or tv show that makes them think, a bore or confusing. It is quite good

A necessary movie
26 February 2021
Foolish youth and guns. Just because they are there doesn't mean you have to play with them. This movie does well in setting up the careless, carefree situation that many find themselves in that leads to a night of trouble. I wish this movie could be shown to teens and young adults alike so that they can see what could happen when guns for fun is a bad choice. It is a movie about friendships, suspicion. guilt and consequences. Surprisingly good! Well cast and acted. It was good to see Ally Sheedy in it as well

Probably one of the best adaptations
19 February 2021
It is truly haunting and in depth the way the story unravels. Unlike the other versions of The Turning of the Screw, this one fills in the gaps and gives foundation to the story. It does leave you "full" by story-end. It is a moderate burn the speeds to a vibrating scare that gets under the skin. I was weary of another "Turning" story and was almost ready to pass on it, but I tell you, "do not pass on it". IT IS WORTH THE WATCH Actors from the "Haunting of Hill House" are here recast as these characters tying it in by way of familiarity, the way American Horror Story uses some of the same for each of it's seasons. Excellent in mood again, just as was The House on Haunted Hill. If you are as I am and pay attention to the small things, there are director and writer choices that you may recall from HoHH (mood music, tone, one-liners). This is well cast, well directed, well written as such ghost stories are and as the previous mentioned Haunted Hill is written. Just as I thought I had it figured out (based on the others I had seen) This series managed to reveal another chapter I hadn't seen before. I was even moved by the love of the characters as it ended. Very well done.

A lot of room to grow
27 January 2021
Soon to be more known actors, indigenous supernatural story line. Interesting first episodes. Humorous at times to lighten the odd happenings surrounding Ritchie and his mother. The acting so far, does feel a bit inexperienced. Some times the dialogue feels stilted, like a college play. I haven't quite caught the directors' style of story telling yet, though some shots feel more suited towards a music video, which is cool, but the rest of it falls into a bit of a "and here's what's happening in between the cool shots" flatline. The kids that we are following don't have much gravitas yet, though we are following them a lot. (That is more a director and script issue) Teens, partying, mom, bad boyfriend, and hallucinations or insanity all come into play. There is plenty of room to grow with it all. Actors, style, pacing mood, there's room. I'm anticipating watching this evolve into more. I have hope for all involved that it will be a success overall

So many missed opportunities
25 January 2021
I don't like to give bad reviews. I do understand the difficulty of filmmaking and writing, intimately. I try to be graceful. That being said this has dull, dull, dull performances. So many characters that deliver slow, low key, droll lines.

Odd camera work. Intimate close ups when there is no need for it. A non use of music, ambient sounds. It makes for a vacuum world these characters exist. Music is good! Use it for more than foreboding. Not good when nothing is happening when dialogue is like molasaes. The clerk, Nikki Blonski from Hairspray, the children through out have the most life in it. Though it makes their scenes feel alien in comparison. Pacing. Odd pacing. So many lines and moments wasted watching these guys looking actors do common things slowly, quietly. We watched and said the lines the way they should have been said while acting out the way the responding actor should have to lead to the pay off accordingly and with energy! I can't tell how serious the director and writer wanted us to take it. It was a perfect boring in between place.

The director doesn't appear to in know how to film these actors in their scenes. Under nose shots, so close we can't see the entire head "why are we so close?!" It does such a disservice to the movie overall. It's like watching Scream but done by a college 1 year college student. When you can have Jake Busey and quell his energy to a sleep walk, that's not good. It has potential. A decent cast. But the directing, editing and camera work fail them all.

Very very good!
9 October 2020
Disturbing mood and story. It begins unsettled and keeps that momentum throughout. Good actors and direction. Roll with each story, they all have their own in Monsterland. The main actress is from the comedy Booksmart. I had a feeling she'd be able to pull off more, like a Brie Larson and Jennifer Lawrence did. This actress can carry it.

Not too bad at all! I liked it
16 September 2020
It's surprise me being both a bit scary and had rather decent horror effects. The acting for the most part was well done. It was decently directed and it had a good pace. The story, the mythos of the batibat, was quite interesting. I appreciated the efforts! These movie can go really really bad. This isn't one of them.

A telling of the attitudes of today
2 September 2020
This is a movie ultimately giving insight to the mind sight of today's generation and the how and why they connect. It is very casual, low budget, sexual situations and discussions of what each thinks of themselves and what they are looking for in another or others. Social media, dating apps, sexual identity, preferences albeit every slice of the pie filled with an identity. I found it enlightening in the search for satisfaction and happiness, as well as a bit sad in what seems like even the quest of "non-box" identity, has become a box in itself.

Just Not Good
15 August 2020
All of these well known actors in such a bad movie. Within the first 15 minutes, you know what you're getting. Poorly written. Terrible dialogue. Each actor has no energy saying their lines. Lack of any creative camera. Boring tension scenes. Predictable at every turn. All of this we've seen before and much, much better. I really hoped it would turn around. I don't like writing bad for creative attempts.

A carryon bag of horror
20 July 2020
The good: the director has influences that are evident, sporadically. Carpenter, King and Cameron maybe even some Tarantino type style can be seen here and there. Mixed with some animation that makes for humor, intentional or not. The bad: the script is horrible. The acting is sub to the point that you wonder if that is intentional too. The idea has been done before with most horror movies involving youth. There's a message to be unpacked, but the delivery of the movie is so bad...do you want to unpack it?
