A real nice surprise
30 April 2017
I got this movie very cheap together with a bunch of others. I want to explore new movies and maybe go into unknown territory. I take a chance. Often the movies are bland or just bad. Now and again I find a movie like this which makes up for all the others.

This movie tells a rather long story in a short time. Seeing all that happens, this movie could easily been an hour longer and still have been interesting. Where many other movies fail doing this. This works.

There are very many scenes and quite little dialogue (not too little though) and somehow it works. The scenes often has memorable details and what comes next is done in a lot better way than most American movies which are too much cliché or just too random.

The movie constantly has shades of innocence and darkness which makes it not fall into the pit of being too serious or too corny.

I thought the movie was okay at first but seeing how it went on and rarely was predictable made me respect it more and more for each scene. A real treat to watch.

When I soon saw the grade on IMDb has was very surprised. 5,5 / 10? That is a mediocre movie to me.. One of the others I have taken a chance for that left little impression. This has left me with a lot of impressions. I highly recommend this movie and I don't even know Chinese. Just watching via subtitles works very fine.

A happy surprise
4 July 2016
Just my two cents about this film.

I started watching it and at the beginning it just felt like a childish/overly American movie that would be hard to stay awake for.. But as the movie went on it grew on me.

From feeling extremely mediocre I got to think it was actually decent and when it was over I thought it was quite good. I thought of it as a "unknown gem". Then I go on IMDb and see the ranks.. And it's 5,3 / 10. Really? For me that is a highly mediocre grade and I've seen my fair share of 5 / 10 movies... This is far better.

After quickly scanning what others felt. It's anti-American reviews and "this didn't actually happen" opinions all over the place. But it's a movie! Sure there are movies based on reality and movies that is far from.. But at the end of the day: It's just a movie! I enjoyed it and regardless of what I feel about every move or part in the movie. It made me think of how it CAN be like. Not how it actually is or isn't.

There are many different movies about War and I must say I've seen plenty that isn't as entertaining or as thought-provoking as this one. See it for what it is.

If you survive the first half hour you'll might just enjoy the ride!

When I started watching this movie, before Samuel L. Jackson was on, it seemed pretty boring. Then when Samuel L. Jackson went on it just felt like a new "Snakes On A Plane" of sorts.

The plot of this movie is silly to say the least BUT if you survive about the first half hour it does turn into a very entertaining movie.

Samuel L. Jackson does, for whatever reason, do quite many half done/b-movies besides all his big Hollywood-productions. Why? It can't be for the money...

I've seen plenty of his "unknown movies" and it's a mixed bag. Some are actually good and others highly mediocre. I definitely count this one as one of the good! The nice effects with the just overly ridiculous plot makes one fun movie.

I would say it's like a properly done "White House"-movie meeting Kick-Ass. I try to see as many movies as I can and very few movies since the beginning of 2016 (now it's early July) has put me in a good mood like this one.

The Homesman (2014)

Not your typical western (and I am glad for it)
2 February 2016
I am thirty years old and most people my age just look up the latest movie and download it. When I watch a older movie or a "unfamous" one most just shake their heads and show no interest.

I personally still buy movies. I buy new, famous, less famous and classics. When you sort of "take a chance" you can end up all sorts of movies.. But this movie is a reason why I take my chances.

The general rank on IMDb is now 6,6 and while that is a decent grade I definitely felt that this movie deserves better.

The movie is a slow one.. And I guess many think of Tommy Lee Jones mainly as a action characther. This however is not a regular western-movie. It takes a long while before I got a real sense of the movie or what it was about.. But it rounded up things nicely. The acting is strong and while the movie is slow it's hard to know what is coming next. It is as far from a action movie with "as many scenes as possible" you can get these days. And I am glad for it.

The scenery is beautiful and fresh. It feels somewhat like a classic western but with a modern touch (in a positive way). While I love a good Clint Eastwood or John Wayne western this is almost the opposite. It's not about catchy one-liners or someone saving the town from crooks. The story is very original and quite odd. It revels it self with time.

I remember when I was about fifteen and saw "Million Dollar Baby" with Hilary Swank and Clint Eastwood. I expected it to be a "Rocky"-movie with catchy soundtrack and a sweet but unrealistic story. As you might know.. That's not the case. It's the same with this one. I later on rewatched that movie and enjoyed it very much but as a young kid just wanting a thrill. That movie and this wasn't what I had in mind then. Today it is!

Buying movies on chance I have ended up with quite many bad or mediocre movies. If I had just downloaded it I might have turned it off after the first half but when I did buy it I sat through it and I am very glad I did. This is a new favorite in my collection. Hope you will enjoy it as much as I did!

This movie is my biggest disagreement with a IMDb grade so far! (after quite many movies)
27 December 2015
I write reviews for each movie I see on my personal blog. Mostly for myself so I'll remember what I thought about it... When looking at a certain amount of movies I have almost forgot some completely. Writing has made me think in a more critical way.

While thinking in a critical way (sort of) watching this movie I thought about positive and negative sides. Without making this up to be "the greatest movie ever made" I didn't really find any negative sides. I guess it takes a while before the plot to show itself.. But in that regard it's still better than many other movies. So that is a nitpick more than a definite negative comment.

Samuel L. Jackson has become one of the biggest stars of our time.. Staring in movies like Star Wars and the most famous Quentin Tarantino movies. Despite this he still star in quite many smaller films. Some right down b-movies. Why? Don't know. But some of the less famous work are surprisingly good. This is definitely one of the better one's... It's actually one of the best movies I've seen in quite a while with only a few competitors.

The environments look dark and fitting. Once the story gets going it is never predictable and yet never loose it's touch (just destroys what could been something really good). The movie is raw and far from the "child-friendly" bigger Hollywood-movies. Though the amount of nudity or violence isn't too much it's just a part of the story.. Like it should in a good movie!

Before watching IMDb I thought this movie must surely have the rate "7/10" or higher. When seeing "5,6/10" I can't believe that I and the rest, who must put a quite low grade, watched the same movie. I've seen plenty "5-6/10" movies lately and this is just better in every sense.

I highly recommend this to anyone!
