Suburban Girl (2007)
Fun and Fluffy
Was this movie a cinematic revolution? No. But how many really are, anyway? Was this movie cute and fun? Absolutely. Was it any worse than any other romantic comedy out there? No. Maybe it was a little bit formulaic, but the formula it followed has resulted in success for a number of other films, so what's so offensive? It wasn't racist, it wasn't intolerant, it wasn't discriminatory or anything else that should cause people to condemn it. It was fluff, with some moments that were very genuine (ie, the scene on the swings between Brett and her brother). The acting, while maybe not Oscar-worthy, was sincere and likable, especially Sarah Michelle Gellar. I liked this movie, judge me all you want. It was cute, it was fun and it wasn't as cliché as most romantic comedies (ie, they don't end up together). The characters are slightly more self- reflexive than you see in most romantic comedies, and the self-reflexivity of a character leads the viewers to be self-reflexive. Maybe we all need to grow up, and seeing Brett navigate the waters of young adulthood in pair of leather pants and some fabulous Louboutins was enough to make this film worthwhile. So again, will it be one day considered a milestone in cinema? No. Did it make me smile? Yes. Isn't that what film is about?
Veronica Mars (2004)
One of the best shows out there...why aren't people watching?!?!?!
It's been described as Buffy without the super powers, which I totally agree with (as does Joss Whedon, creator of Buffy) as an avid Buffy fan. I watched this show, count it, ONE time and was absolutely hooked. I think Veronica is an incredible role model, she's smart and she's got attitude to spare, and she always sticks to her convictions. Sure, she's got her flaws, but she wouldn't be as compelling if she were perfect. When I hear people voicing objections to this show I listen to them, most of them say the same thing: it's not realistic. And.......what you were expecting like a diary of a normal person's life? Is Prison Break believable? Not at all, even Wentworth Miller acknowledged that it's absolutely preposterous. If being believable was the point, then they would have filmed a real live teenage girl and put it on television. If you want reality, videotape yourself. Reality is not the point of television, even reality TV is ridiculously absurd (the Bachelor? Come on). And when people say the show is realistic, I highly highly doubt that they mean the situations but the relationships between the characters. My friend and I have a relationship like Veronica and Wallace. He doesn't sneak into the office to steal me permanent records but the reliability is the point. So stop taking everything so literally and seriously and just LET GO! It's meant for entertainment.
