15/Love (2004)
Boring
At first, I found the show charming. Then as the later seasons came I realized that nothing really interesting was happening. The characters became dull and the acting also lost something. Some episodes didn't even focus on what I THOUGHT was the main focus; tennis. I know, I know, just because tennis is an important part of the show doesn't mean it has to be in every episode, but still. I started to feel like they were straying away from everything in order to create new plot lines that would usually only last three seconds.
Like I said before; the story just got dull. It was just the same people with the same problems. There was little character development (since the plane crash) and eventually Laurence Laboeuf's acting started getting on my nerves (her narratives were quite dry).
If you really need something to watch and there is nothing on TV aside from 15 Love, watch it. Under any other circumstances, you might as well skip it.
Awkward. (2011)
A little funny, a lot of awkward
"Awkward." didn't really excite me for the first few episodes. I found it kind of stupid and annoying, but the more recent episodes have attracted my interest. I was really turned off by all of the potty humour, and I felt like the only intelligent main character was Jenna. However, now that the plot is starting to set itself up in an interesting manner, I feel more entertained. I find myself more interested in Jenna's future relationships and in Jake's possible crush on her. Like I said before, I'm not a big fan of potty humour, but there have been some really clever bits of dialog that have made me die laughing, and it's starting to make up for it. I also find Jenna's mom quite entertaining. It's like a reversed role; a serious teenage girl and an image-conscious, flirty mom. I'll admit that some of the humour is refreshing, but some of it still leaves me wanting more. Since it's a new show and I've only seen the first few episodes, we'll see if it provides more.
The Secret Life of the American Teenager (2008)
A promising start with disappointing results
I started out as a huge fan of this show; I found the dialogue cute and entertaining and I thought the characters were interesting. However, some of the acting is really not up to par and within the past twenty or so episodes the writing has become unbearable. A lot of people say they hate this show because it's not realistic, but in reality a large percent of television is not realistic and more entertaining because of it. I don't think that "The Secret Life's" problem is realism, it's standards. The producers and directors have to realize that spicing a show up with greater issues does not make up for bad writing and awful acting. Although, not all of the actors are horrible. Francia Raisa is really talented and Ken Baumann usually puts on a good show (although he can't cry to save his life). I feel like in recent episodes, "The Secret Life" has tried to change it's adorable style into something they think an audience will like more, and falling short. Changing the style of the show doesn't change the quality. In summary, "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" is an enjoyable program, but only if you stop watching at the end of volume 5.
