Under the Western Sun (2011)
Great family film with some intriguing new actors (and director).
UNDER THE WESTERN SUN is like the city mouse visits the country mouse in order to deal with some real family issues, but with a light touch. Director Danny Cameron makes his feature debut and scores lots of points with a real plot and some solid acting by unknowns like Mark Scheibmeir, Troy Streuer and Pam Eichner. This film is full of fresh faces and lots of humor, and a taste of country -- not stereotyped, but very modern and colorful. The new faces and places keep you guessing about which way things will go. Does money trump family, or vice-versa, or maybe is it a little more complicated than that? I felt I was watching a western set in the modern world, but without the guns--except this was WITH the guns, and horses and the tears and laughs, and characters looking for the real stuff -- I give UNDER THE WESTERN SUN a thumbs up, and hope it gets into general release.
