The Killer (2023)
Fincher can't miss
Glad I saw some of the negative reviews on here, and went into it with low expectations. While I wouldn't recommend The Killer to everybody, it's dark, and none of the characters are good people but somehow Fincher finds a way to make the movie enjoyable. It's shot beautifully and super stylistic (as you'd imagine) with great pacing. What works best is the movie doesn't try to be something it's not, and I love it for what it is.
Fassbender puts in a strong performance as you'd expect, and was perfect for the role. Very good action scenes which were super satisfying and I'm glad it didn't feel rushed or out of reality. The plot is simple for the most part, but the story keeps you on the edge, and it's not predictable as you don't know who the main character is, what he's about to do or what's about to happen next.
Lastly, the soundtrack from Trent Reznor is brilliant and fitting - giving off some Gone Girl vibes. Almost feels like Fincher's crime films all live in the same universe and he can't go wrong in this genre. Solid 9/10.
Dexter: New Blood: Sins of the Father (2022)
Disappointing yes but not as bad as S8 finale. Dexter gets what he deserves
Let's get one thing right here, this finale was not worse than the S8 finale. Nothing gets worse than that.
I'm happy with the fate Dexter got, because he gets what he deserves. All Dexter knew is what Harry taught him, and he carried Harry's problems to his relationship with Harrison. The letter at the end was a decent touch, there was no scenario where Harrison and Dexter co-exist and live together happily ever after.
All this being said, I had a problem with the directing of this episode, how the hell does Dexter escape the jail cell, get into the car while it's nighttime. Then ALL THE SUDDEN we see it's daytime and he's running through the woods? Wouldn't he need to get out of Iron Lake ASAP??? That didn't make sense, neither did it make sense for the way Harrison kills Dexter. And it certainly didn't make sense how Chief Bishop just happens to show up. No logic to the last 20 odd minutes of the episode.
Again I think the dialogue makes sense and the overall fate of Dexter was well deserved. But wow they messed up the execution of this episode!!
OVERALL, incredible season I loved every episode except this one, I still recommend people to watch Dexter and this season (regardless of all its flaws) it's still one of my favourite shows of all time. This season WAS necessary let's not get too carried away, the episodes prior to this one had the charisma, sarcasm and thrilling content that we're used to with Dexter when it was at its peak.
Ghahreman (2021)
Watched at TIFF - Incredible performances all around, Jadidi steals the show!
It's not Farhadi's best but I very much enjoyed this film! Amir Jadidi absolutely steals the show and puts in probably his greatest performance to date. Just watch how his acting from the first half of the film shifts drastically in the last hour - he shows incredible range and makes a name for himself here.
In terms of the story, Farhadi once again throws you directly into the characters' lives and provides an interesting take on social media's greatest and most disturbing influences. It's not as entertaining as A Separation or The Salesman but I enjoyed A hero for what it is. It's a social discussion on the lengths one would go to keep their honour and reputation despite financial challenges.
This had one of the best cinematography I've seen from all Farhadi's films, I recommend people to watch this expecting a slow and much darker story then his previous features.
Sincerely Louis CK (2020)
He's back with darker joke than ever, and it's awesome!!
SO happy he is back, been waiting for this a long time and he delivered brilliantly once again. Stand-up was just not the same with him gone and he manages to make you laugh regardless of how sensitive the topic is.
1917 (2019)
If you're a fan of cinema, then you will love this!
I congratulate everybody that was involved in the production of this film because they gave us a masterful work of art.
It's astonishing that they made this film with such realism and emotion, and it would absolutely wouldn't be the same without the long shots and brilliant cinematography.
1917 has to be the best film of the year and I think this film along with Birdman have inspired a new genre of film. I hope more directors are encouraged by this film because I'm out of words on how great of an impact this has left on me!
The Irishman (2019)
One Last Time...
First thing I wanna say is THANK YOU Martin Scorsese for making this film and giving us one more ride with Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and this time, the great Al Pacino.
I didn't know what to expect from watching this film because I wasn't familiar with the backstory as the era is way before my time. I saved reading up about the full story of Jimmy Hoffa and Frank Sheeran until after watching the movie.
Needless to say, this film takes you on a rollercoaster emotional ride, one that I'm unfamiliar with watching Scorsese films. Usually, you get a huge dose of energy and excitement but I absolutely loved the different vibe The Irishman presents.
It's probably the most philosophical movie Scorsese has ever made, and it really makes you wonder about the decisions we make in our lives and the consequences of them. The satire, the acting, cinematography, soundtrack, and storytelling were absolutely spot on and exactly what you'd expect in a Scorsese film.
For me, this is the best film of 2019 as of yet.
The End of the F***ing World: Episode #2.1 (2019)
Brilliant first episode return of this show!!!
I am absolutely amazed by this episode, its shocking to see this show return and I'm so glad with how the first episode went!
As always, "The End of the F*cking World" constantly keeps you guessing, and the suspense this episode built makes me want to binge watch the rest. I ABSOLUTELY love the cinematography, writing, soundtrack, and directing this show has and episode 1 is a perfect example why.
Cannot wait for the next episode!!
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
Did Tarantino actually write, produce and direct this?
Not what you expect from a Tarantino film. Ive watched every single Tarantino film and this has to be the worst one yet. Other than the great acting, the plot was simply not good enough, not much happens, and overall the film felt a bit pointless. Maybe I have to rewatch it because I missed something, but at first watch, I did not like this film.
Game of Thrones: The Long Night (2019)
Reminds Us All Why We Watch This Masterpiece
What can I say that hasn't already been said about this episode. Absolutely breathtaking! This was a true masterpiece from everybody involved for the production of this episode. I can't remember the last time a TV show episode had me feel in this particular way.
It's hard to pinpoint just one thing that stood out because all of the elements came together so brilliantly! The MUSIC, acting, directing, writing, editing was done in absolute perfection. This has to be the single best episode in television history. I can't WAIT for the finale, and I really can't imagine how they can top this.
